New to Santee - Need Help Finding Our "Niche"

I am new to Santee after marrying the love of my life. I have lived in Tucson for the last 20 years and I am having a hard time adjusting to being in a place where the only person I know is my husband. I have two children (11 and 14) and I want to make this transition as seamless as I can for them. Any ideas of places to meet great people and to help me help my family become a part of the community? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

July 4th is coming up. Santee has a really fun family night & fireworks show at the baseball field on Cuyamaca across from Food4Less. Good luck to you in Santee. I lived there for about 2 years and I found it very difficult to meet people there compared these other parts of the county. I would suggest going out to the parks on nice summer evenings for exercise. Santee has some beautiful and well maintained parks. I especially liked (I think it's called..) Mast Park, right off Carlton Hills and Mast. The walking trails are great...

Hi A.,

I live in Santee as well and I just love it here. East County gets a bad rap but Santee has become quite a great community in the past few years. Now my daughter is only four, so I'm not yet familiar with things to do for the older ones. I take her to the Santee YMCA for gymnastics, but they do a lot of other activities there as well.

Santee is a great place for sports if your son's are into that. Go to the Santee web site and check out all of the sports and activities that they can sign up for.

There is always a lot going on in the summer months at Santee Lakes and at the Trolley Square Shopping Center where they do little concerts. If your family is the outdoor type, mission trails has great hiking and biking trails. For your older son, both Santana and West Hills are great High Schools. Santana has always had a good sports program.

It is scarry moving to a new area when you have lived in one place for most of your life. We moved out to Flagstaff for a few years. It was quite an adjustment, but it was a great experience. It will take some time, but I'm sure you will like living in Santee.

I'm sure you will meet people/parents through school. There is a nice church at Carlton Hills Blvd. & Mast that your family can become active in; you can join Curves in Santee where you will have a chance to exercise for 30 minutes with other women that live in the area, and if your children play any sports you can have them join a soccer and/or basebal team - that's a great way to meet other parents of children the same ages as yours. I used to live in Santee - great community! Give it some time; I'm sure meeting your neighbors will help too!

Hi A.! Check out meetup.com. Plug in your zip code and interest and it should bring up some groups in your area.

I don't know if you're religious, but church is a great place to meet people. Your kids must be in middle and high school, and it's hard to meet parents when they are that old. The only thing I can think of is church - there are so many nice activities at churches for both kids and parents, especially in the summer.

I go to church at Sonrise Community Church where there is always something going on. I teach a Fit for the Kingdom class at 5:30 on Monday nights. Bring the kids!
