Thanks for all the amazing responses. I think we will rent a house in the southwest area near the loop. Then we will check out neighborhoods and see what's what. Basically, we picked a small radius from where my husband's job will be. I am looking for a program for gifted special ed. My son has ADHD and a writing disability. He is very gifted in math. He is also emotionally fragile. Anyone who knows anything, I would love a response. Thank you in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great suggestions. If you can, keep them coming. I have contacted several schools and am planning a trip to Houston to check out your great city.

There are a lot of school with support for students with special needs. I am a high school counselor and help families find schools when their students have special needs (be it physical, learning, or emotional). Depending on your son's age, educational level, and financial resources, there are many options. A good place to start is http://houstonprivateschools.org/ Look at the section on schools with special programs. But be aware that there are also other schools not on this site. Feel free to contact me if I can help.

I'm sure you will get some great advice on schools in this area. In the homeschooling arena, there's a program with National Academy of Child Development, www.nacd.org or com. The originator,Richard Doman(?) was in such high demand in Pennsylvania that he started a clinic, then went to consulting all over the country. There are consultants trained under him, and you can find a local consultant. They test, recommend the curriculum, and meet monthly or more often if needed.

The homeschool support group in Sugar Land is Sugar Creek Christian Home Educators. www.scche.org. It is a very large group with lots of activities and meetings.

Magnet schools will help keep his mind active. Your son sounds alot like mine. I live on the north side of Houston off 290 maybe we can get together and I can help you adjust to ADHD. It is easier to help with this on a first hand bases then trying to explain. ____@____.com

The Joy School is a wonderful school. It is near downtown.loop area. We live too far away for everyday school but we go there in the summers. It specializes in children with ADD ADHD etc. I am not sure how the gifted math would fit in. They gave me a list of similar schools when I checked into the program. Schools with children of various needs. It is a place to start. Hope this helps. www.thejoyschool.org. Good luck with the move. we moved here from Minneapolis-so about as far north.

Dear D.,

You mentioned that you think your son has "ADHD". I was wondering who told you that? I run a literacy center and we see children every day that are told they have a "disorder" such as ADHD and it turns out they have poor reading instruction. I defintely recommend that you hold off saying he has this disorder in front of him because that can set a pattern of negative thinking on the part of the child ie "I can't do it because I have ADHD".

If you want more information on this, read the book by Fred Baughman, MD, Neurologist: The ADHD Fraud: How Psychiatry Makes "Patients" of Normal Children. It is a real eye opener.

I have noticed that more and more parents are disagreeing with this "diagnosis" and are seeking tutors and getting one-on-one help with their child's reading and writing skills. If a child needs more help with a subject, they can't get it in a classroom with 25+ other students in the room.

Despite NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, it is still happening.
