My 15 year old son is bi polar and has taken Depakote Er and Wellbutrin for the past year. His psychiatrist started him on Vyvanse this week. I was just wondering if any of you had any experience with this medication? He is taking 30mg a day to start off. He says he feels great in the mornings but after 5 or 6 hours he is getting pretty moody and stressed . We go back in 1 month to see how dosage is working.

What can I do next?

My husband is bi-polar (hypomanic) and has been on Stavzor, www.stavzor.com, which has seemed to calm him down and help him make more reasonable decisions, not quite so moody, impulsive and selfish. Just another option to ask the doctor about if you don't like what your son is currently on.

My problem is getting him to take the meds...he seems to like to always be on a 'high' w/o his meds, which makes life for the rest of us a living hell...won't sleep, party animal, makes costly impulsive decisions, etc...

My daughter took Vyvance for quite some time when it first came out. She is 30 and was diagnosed with ADD. She said she had the same experience with it. You are supposed to take it first thing in the morning and she was great until late afternoon. The doc upped the dosage to the 50mg and the results were the same. Finally, they figured out the thing to do was take the 30mg in the morning and another 30 later in the day. That worked perfectly. Talk to your doc. Her doc was quite excited about this medication as it is quite different than many of the other drugs out there today.

My son has been on alot of ADDH med's - so I try to monitor his moods during the day on the calendar and with his teachers( they help me with daily if there is any changes)and keeping up with his grades. So when we have our monthly appointment with our doctor - he knows what is going on in our son - daily school activities. That way the doctor knows what dosage or if we need to change dosages of med's. But the bottom line is understanding your son moods and what kinda med's you want him on. My biggest advice is to monitor and write down the times he is moody and his feelings. When you go back to see the doctor to talk about the moody and stressful periods. Have your son answer the doctors questions and you give input about daily life. I understand that our situation may be different but my son has been taking med's since kindergarten. If you have any questions for the doctor ask because you are your son advocate.

well, vyvanse is an adhd type med - did they determine that he has that as well as being bipolar? is he still on the other two meds? i wouldn't wait a month if you have concerns.

We've been using Vyvanse 30mg for about a year now for my 15 yr old's ADHD. Works really well for us in that regard. Not sure about using it for bipolar. Might call your doctor back and talk with him to update him.
