Needing Advice with Hair Color...

After calling some salons to see if I could bring my kids along with me to my appointment and being told no, I'm gonna do something I have never done before!! I'm gonna color my hair myself! What kind do you guys use? I have processed hair already. My ends have some old hair color on them, and I also have a perm. I don't want to end up with green hair!! Please tell me what I should know before starting this adventure! Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

i agree! i do my hair myself, but if you've never done it on your own i wouldnt reccommend it!

I've been coloring my own hair now for the last 6 or 7 years. I started going gray really young, so had no choice. (I'm brunette) The trick is to pick a color closest to your natural color, a step lighter even because it will be darker at first. I tend to like Loreal. I cover my bathroom floor with plastic paint drop cloths and my counter, and bring in a digital timer. I pay $10.00 every six weeks as oppossed to spending the astronomical amount the salon charges. People who work at a salon tell you, you are ruining your hair, it will be uneven, etc, but I have not had this problem, just use a good conditioner. I would rather spend my money on other things!

I would never color my hair myself. Use Heather, or get a babysitter. I can understand some salons saying no.... they are a business and if they are set up for kids, it's not fair to you or to their other customers.

My kids are older now, but when they were little I always had a sitter or my husband for hair appointments. I wanted to enjoy the experience of doing something for myself!

I'd bring them on errands and doctor appointments.... until the time one of them stuck the car keys in an uncovered socket in the dentists office and the lights went out in the office....

DON't DO YOUR OWN HAIR!!!! I made this mistake once - color is not an easy thing to get right! Much easier to get it done right than have someone try and fix it later!

OMG stop!!!! I do hair and you can bring your kids!!! Please!! You have to many things on your hair for you to do it yourself and it be all one color...not gonna happen...it would take unevenly!!! H. B. I work in Hurst at Denman's I work Wed, Thurs, Sat, late evenings Wed and Thurs. Im off tomarrow, but I can do you Wed or Thurs or Sat of this comming week. Let me know what you want and I will tell you the price. My clients bring their kids all the time, we even have a TV!! ###-###-####

I am a hair stylist as well, and if you had chemically untouched hair, you would have a much better chance at getting an even and desirable color, but with the perm, and the faded color on the ends, you will most likely end up with an undesirable, patchy looking color job, that will damage your hair worse, and require a more expensive and time consuming visit to the salon.

We often had children come into our salon, sometimes for 1-4 hours and they did not enjoy themselves and the parents were unable to recieve a nice relaxing service with the kind of consultation they needed. Some salons are more kid friendly than others. Please, try and find a sitter for a couple for hours, or go see one of the other stylists that posted.
