I have 3 children. 7, 5 and 6 months. After my 6 month old was born (his name is Zane)..I went down to 151. I was so proud, this was less then I weighed before I got pregnant. Now within 6 months I'm up to 175, I have not done anything different and really eat a lot less than I use to (not good I know). But I work full time, and take care of the kids and house when I'm home. The doctor said all of my lab work looks good but am not sure why I'm having such a rapid weight gain, has anyone else gone through this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I went to the doctor this morning and he said that my thyroid is "a little" low but not low enough to affect my weight so drastically. I am in a 14 now and have never been this big (while not pregnant)...but I'm happy. My husband and my kids think I'm beautiful so I guess that's all that matters. I do not eat a lot during the day but do take time to eat things that are healthy when I do eat BUT I am a Dr Pepper addict and it's nothing suprising for me to drink 12 a day...LOL..isn't that terrible! The doc said "now that your getting older" (I hate that especially with turning 30 next week) your metabolism doesn't work as good...and he suggested I cut out the soda and said I might be suprised with how much weight I loose just doing that so well see! Thanks for all the advice guys! I'm so glad I found this site!!

K.,
I have found it's not how much you eat it's what we eat.If I leave the breads and potatos and corn alone I do real good on weight lost. also laying off of cokes and diet cokes help I drink water instead. I don't know if this will help you but has me.

Hi K.,

Seems you have your hands full...I can remember those days when the kids were small.

As for your weight issues I've realized that the older we get the faster we put on the pounds. What i do to loose wieght and maintain is to take time to workout at least 4 times a week...even if its just for 30 minutes and reduce my calories by 500. Eat 5 times a day...small meals that equal to about 300 calories each and I guarantee you...You will loose weight, have more energy, feel full, and have less cravings for the bad foods. I swear on Ezequal Bread...thats the only one i eat and i dont eat any crackers, sugar, bread etc. If i do...its really considered a treat. In the last 2-3 months i've lost about 15 lbs and about 4-5 inches off my waist which is pretty awesome. As we get older the elastic in our skin gets loose so its important to weight train (lift weights) to tone up and get rid of that unwanted fat, and cellulite. Let me tell you...those diet pills only help loose wieght which is all Water and lean muscle which in turn (after your off them) will make your metabolism slower and double the fat you will gain back.

If you have questions about all this...please let me know. I'm becoming quiet the expert. :)

Also, the kids would love it if you all went for a 30 min walk so if you dont have someone to watch the kiddos...there is no excuse. Also, it will give them a chance to get a little tired and then probably take a nap when they get home. Thats always a plus.

Kelly, welcome to your 30's!!!

My youngest is almost 2. I am 37. I weighed 170 when I got PG with her (I had gestational diabetes and only put on 8 pounds - or should I say, I replaced some of my fat for her nutritional benefit). After a couple of months of nursing, I was down to 158. I was so happy, I hadn't seen that number in years. I nursed her for 4 months (work made it difficult to keep it up), anyway, 4 months later, I had put on 20 pounds. I went to Jenny Craig and dropped 10 of it in 8 weeks. And spent the rest of the year trying to manage it on my own, unsuccessfully.

I recently started with LA Weightloss. This time upping my fruits and veggies and water and cutting out all the bad stuff (have missed out on birthday and shower cake the last 2 weekends), yet my body seems to be stuck at 165. I have not been diligent about working out, though I KNOW that for me, this is truly what I have to do if this is going to work.

A few things I do know... 1) eating less is good, but you still have to maintain a good calorie count. Make sure you are eating a minimum of 1200 calories a day - otherwise, you'll put your body into starvation mode and it'll just hold on to whatever you give it. 2) Keep a food journal - include calories. You would be shocked to know what you will avoid eating just so you don't have to write it down! OR you'll find that perhaps, you really are eating more than you thought. 3) Drink lots of water (This is my most difficult task). I was informed that diet cokes do not count in that 64oz of water I'm to drink (minimum) a day - dang it!!! 4) You have to move more (now that the days are getting longer, let the boys ride their bikes and you push the baby in the stroller along side them).

Good luck, it's a rough road. If you wish to chat, for moral support, email me.

Hi K.,

I'm 39.. and holding. :) I have never had weight issues in my life and after my 5th child was born 5 yrs ago it seemed to change. While I'm 5'6 and only 138 pounds.. I should be more like 128. It's only 10 pounds but I had to do some drastic things to make sure I don't get heavier. I too am a Dr. Pepper lover and I switched to Diet Dr. Pepper.. after you do it for 1 week, you will LOVE the taste and not be able to go back to the leaded stuff again!

Also, 2 things to remember.. #1 - You must consume less calories then you expend in order to lose weight.. no matter what anyone tells you or weight loss pills or promises diets make, if you consume more calories than you expend in a day you WILL gain weight.

#2 - EXCERCISE - I say that but it is the hardest thing for me to do. I work full time and sit at the computer most of my day. That makes excercise hard and I'll be honest, i don't like spending money on a gym and hate doing situps. So I found fun ways to excercise. I just taught both younger girls 5 and 7 how to ride bikes without training wheels -- that was MAJOR excercise, now we bike ride on the trails in the woodlands together. I swim and walk and ride my bike and run at the park with the girls kicking a soccer ball. This way I keep my body moving without noticing that I'm excercising.

Good luck.. I can't imagine having had this problem all my life and I have a new found respect for women who have had a constant struggle with thier weight! It is so not fun.. but I know if I stay in shape I'll have the potential to live longer so I keep trying.

hello, Kelli, i cant explain why you gained the weight, but i do know what your going through. After my last baby, i went up to 206 pounds. I didn't know why, but i eventually i figured it out. By me having 2 beautiful kids and a husband and a house to take care of, i was eating whatever i could to keep me going,(Which sometimes wasn't the healthiest thing). So i needed a diet that could somewhat cater to my schedule and not force me to eat grass all day. So i tried Weight Watchers, it is the perfect diet for a busy mom. You can eat what you want, just in proportion, and we only have one meeting a week. It is worth a try, it worked for me. Good luck, and take care of yourself.

I did the same things with both pregnancies - the doctor explained to me that the babies will make sure that they get what they need and will in essence take it from me. My body is apparently somewhat happy at this weight. Also, talk to your doctor about your thyroid. Mine is not very active (called hypo) and I have these cute little pills to take every morning to boost it.

I am about to start taking these nutrition bars that burn "stored" fat. That should help a little.

I went through the same thing with my daughter; she's now ten years old; I went from 120 to 150 in no time and I'm still working to take it off; when I started going pass the 150, I had to take other measures; I now exercise about 4 time a week, 30 mins each; I don't eat dinner, except on Fridays . . . that's family night; this year I gave up fried foods and Cokes! What's a woman to do?

I was told when I moved where I am now that if your body is used to getting about the same amount of food for a while and you back off on your eating, your body will STORE the fat in the food. Your body thinks it's starving so it stores every bit of fat you actually do eat so it can burn it for energy. I've had 2 kids, one's 5 and one's 6 mos., and I can't seem to lose all the weight I want to either. My mom's had 4 kids and she's the one who gave me this advice. Eat a little more often throughout the day. Even if you're not hungry, grab a few crackers and some water.

I have yet to figure out why I have put on weight since having my youngest 8 months ago. I am now back up to what I was before I had her, and for the life of me can't figure out why. I am pretty active (walk at least two miles a day across the campus) and eat far less than I did when I was pregnant. But I am nursing and that does make it harder till I quit. Hope that someone has a better answer than I do, I'm sure eventually your body will get back. Also, what everyone tells me is that it took 9 months to put the weight on, and it should take at least that to take it back off, if not longer as has been in my case with my first.

Interseting how this is so common. I just went to the doctor about this issue. He thought it wa my thyroid, but all my labs came back normal. I lost lots of weight after I had my child, he will be three in June and I weigh more now than before I got pregnant. I'm not sure why, I've started going to the gym 5 days a week and I haven't noticed any difference yet, but hopefully I will soon! Good luck to you and be sure to post something if you find anything that works!
