Hi Ladies. I want to have baby #2 before there are too many years between my daughter and her future sibling. However, since becoming married 16 months ago, having a baby and turning 31, I feel as though I have gained weight over night. I had a wonderful preg with my daughter, gained 20lbs, lost it after birth. Then gained 20lb over the past year. I need suggestions on diet and exerise for women over 30. When I was in my 20's I had no problems with my weight. Like my husband tells me I'm not a spring chicken anymore, but I don't want to be overweight going into a pregnancy for baby #2. Thanks Ladies!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses during the summer, but little did I know I probably had a baby brewing. LOL! I'm now 6.5 months pregnant with our son, feeling great, looking great and looking forward to meeting him. I will be hitting the yoga and aerobics after he arrives... Thanks again!

I was exactly in your shoes L., 30 is not old by any means, I am 46 now, but had my son at 30 and only gained 20 lbs but gained it back after delivery! I looked better at 3 months after delivery than I did a year and a half after delivery! The best thing to do is get that metabolism fired up and that usualloy means doing some type of weights (building muscle) and a bit of cardio. Pushing the baby in the stroller at the mall, or walking or light jogging. you are still very young! Dont think of youself as older.
Also, it does seem that our bodies hold onto carbs and sugars much easier than they did in our 20s and before baby came along. Wieght watchers has a great program, you can do online. By eating mostly protien and green veggies you can loose up to 1 lb a day! (LEAN AND GREEN)
Avoid bread, pasta, rice Cokes, etc. Lean meat and veggies and it always works for me. Wish you luck! And hope you have a great 2nd preganncy! You are still a Spring Chicken!

It's a very simple answer, just very hard to do. You just need to eat less, and exercise more. I am a personal trainer, and have had two children myself. I am 41, and work out just as hard as I did when I was 21. You are still very young too. I don't believe in diets. People go on diets and usually lose weight, but eventually they go off the diet and gain all the weight back, plus some. You have to try to make healthy choices when you can, and when you can't, you just have to eat less of it. I still make normal meals like most families, I just eat small portions. Most nights I have a salad before my main meal, to help me to be more satisfied on the smaller portions of the less healthy foods. And I drink lots of water during meals - this also helps me to feel more full. As for exercise, try to do something you like, and do it most days of the week. Jump rope, walk/jog, swim, bike - whatever you like so that you will be more likely to want to do it. Try to get your heart rate up and push yourself - not just a casual stroll around the block. I do teach a boot camp exercise class if you feel you need something, or someone to push you. I advertise on Mamasource, so feel to contact me if you need more information or help. My boot camp is called Boot Camp In The Park. Good Luck!!!

Go online to find your basal metabolic rate, eat fewer calories than that rate, but no less than 1,200 calories a day. Exercise every day alternating cardio with strength training and remember to stretch before and after exercise to avoid injuries. www.bodyforlife.com has a program that many people have success with, and it is easy to incorporate it as a lifestyle.

I invested in the P90X program, and it worked wonders. Not only does it get your body in shape, but the nutrition plan really helps shed the pounds and give you a healthy, balanced diet (no crazy diet fads with this one).

You'll get basically a book that outlines your workout plan and a book that outlines your nutrition plan; read both books (it's really just a few pages that you have to read through), and everything will make sense from there. It's really an easy plan once you read through everything.
I'll admit that it's not an easy plan to stick with. I'm a comfort eater, and it was tough giving up my Dr. Pepper and usual breakfast of toast smothered in peanut butter. But, it was worth it when pounds started coming off.

As for the exercise program, it's not easy, but it's not impossible. When my husband started doing the program, he couldn't even do a sit-up, and now he's got great abs!
Tony Horton is the name of the guy who leads the programs, and he's really good about giving different levels for each exercise and encouraging everyone to stop when they've reached their limit and work up endurance over time.

You'll need free weights (we got the hand weights that you can add different weights to to adjust the weight so we didn't have a large assortment of weights).

Two things that really helped me--#1 was that my husband did this with me. Without his support, I wouldn't have made it through the full 90 days. When I wasn't feeling like working out, he was there to motivate me, and vice versa. It also helped that he was following the same diet and not eating pizza while I was sticking to my low-fat broccoli beef stirfry (which is good, by the way). #2--we resolved to "push play every day." Even when we didn't feel like working out, we would put on our workout clothes and start the DVD we were doing that day. Once it started, we found we got in a really good workout. You just can't let yourself give up.

My suggestion is all natural (and it worked to shed 45 lbs for me in 3 months) is to eliminate the following; refined sugar, white bread, potato products, pasta, soda (even diet - the only soda I drank was Diet Rite - it has no sodium, no calories, no carbs and no sugar). I increased fiber, fruit, veggies and protein. This was all recommended by my fertility specialist. He also suggested that I walk briskly at least 20 minutes 3x a week.

I lost the weight fast and felt great. Good luck.

I am a huge Weight Watchers advocate. You don't have to go to meetings and you can still follow the program online. After awhile it becomes second nature to you so you do not need to continue paying for it. It's not real expensive, about $15/mo (I think). You do not have to buy certain foods or take pills or anything like that. You just learn to choose foods wisely. I also go to a local gym that has child care. It's nice to be able to have an hour or so to myself and my kids enjoy playing with the other kids at the gym.

Nutrisystems.

Food is delivered right to your door - just add salad.

I lost 17 pounds in a couple of months and kept it off, while not on nutrisystems for over six months. My niece, who recommended to me, lost 70lbs. A man at my husband's work who started when I did, lost over 80lbs. It's great for those of us that didn't have to worry about our weight and now after kids and getting older, do.

Note: After first week of not missing any meals, I lost the cravings for that unknown food and sweets. Made it so much easier.
I also wasn't hungry while losing. Felt like I was eating so much.
Took the guess work out of what to eat and what to take with me when I wasn't going to be home.

Thumbs up.

Honestly, I know you asked about losing weight, but if I were you, I would just go ahead and start planning #2. I was in the absolute best shape of my life at 32 - when I had my son (I turned 33 right before I had him). Then, of course, I gained weight over the next few years because I could not exercise like I had before I had him. I was probably 20 lbs up when I had my daughter at 37. My kids are 4.5 years apart and I think that is TOO many years. So, if you want your kids to be fairly close in age, I would go ahead and start planning to have that 2nd baby.

On the flip side, there is no reason you can't do what the other women are recommending. Eating properly and moderately exercising can be done WHILE you are pregnant. You would just have to get super serious about losing the weight after the 2nd baby.

Of course, I'm telling you all of this, but I am not SUPER heavy. I am still carrying an extra 15 lbs, but I am by no means extremely overweight. If you are extremely overweight, then, I would recommend that you lose weight before the 2nd baby. But, if you are only carrying an extra few pounds, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, and for a little more information..when I was in the best shape of my life at 32, I was doing Weight Watchers and also Jazzercise (step aerobics - 4 days a week). Your husband is right, after 30, it's a lot harder to stay in shape. I'm 39 now and still don't have time for aerobics like I did, but I try to go to the gym at lunchtime and do the elliptical machine or walk on the treadmill. And, every mornning, I do a "core" workout that strengthens my core muscles (for about 15 minutes).

L.,
This sounds JUST like me except my children are 5 years a part. I had my first daughter, gained 20 lbs with her and lost it all. I went back down to 115. Kept it off for 3 or 4 yrs and my husband came back from his second tour of Iraq and we ate at every restraunt he missed in his 12 mths of being a way. Then decided to have another baby. I tried to lose the weight before baby #2 but was unable to do so. So, I had baby #2 and decided on weight watchers and it worked. I lost about 3+ pounds a week.
