Hi Moms,
My daughter went for a well visit to have a couple vaccinations and also a blood draw (i think the blood draw was supposed to be done at 1 year). Anyway, the doctor needs a sample of her urine as well, and I just want to know how do I collect urine from a 14 month old?!? Stand her up in the tub and wait for pee? Ring out a diaper lol? How am I supposed to collect this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

you could always load her up with milk or water and strip her down to her below her shirt. Keep her inside until she has to pee, and just stick the potty underneath her when she starts to go. You may have a little mess to clean up, but if your doctor doesn't have those bags the other were talking about, it may work...

He should have given you a pediatric urine collection bag, which is basically a tiny plastic bag with a sticky opening that you stick only her vagina - don't worry, it doesn't hurt - I need to use them on my 8 month old, and she didn't complain at all. If your doc doesn't have them, or you don't want to bother going back there, you should be able to find them at a local pharmacy - they should be pretty cheap. Call first to make sure they have them, and get at least 3, just in case. I'd put it on her right after she drinks, without a diaper.

Hi there,
Our 1 year old boy has been using the (grown-up) toilet every morning since he was 6 months old. I sit on the back of the toilet seat and hold him on the toilet between my legs. I use "cueing" words and sounds to let him know that it is time to go. Ours are poo-poo and pee-pee and I also make a "Psssss" sound. He's a very active child so I always have toys next to me to keep him occupied otherwise he gets squirmy. Using this technique he happily poops on the toilet every morning and occasionally he pees also. You will probably need someone with you to hold the urine cup and be ready to act fast. Also, you could use a little potty. We used a potty for a while and I just placed it on the counter top in the kitchen and held him up on it. This seemed to work just as well, and would be more convenient for you to make sure you catch the pee.

We read about this approach in a book called "Diaper Free" and it is used around the world in places where people have always done this (since before diapers were invented). We are not diaper free, but it's nice not to have to change many poopy diapers (he mostly only pees the rest of the day)and I figure we have a leg-up (so to speak) on potty training...

'hope this is helpful, and maybe it might be useful for more than just the one urine collection!! Just a final note that we never keep him on the potty or the toilet if he doesn't want to do it at that time. Toys are helpful to convince him to sit still for a while, but they don't work every time. If he really want off, we stop and try again later. I don't want him to have any negative associations with toileting, so we are really careful about this.

Best,
J. (mom to Khalil, 12 months)

They should have given you something that looks like a plastic bag and tapes on like a diaper. The baby should be able to walk around playing and when they urinate it will fill up into the bag. If they haven't given you anything then I would call and ask for one. I remember a few of my friends children had urinary track infections and they had to wear one. Maybe you can call your local pharmacy for suggestions. Good luck!!

Since the doctor has asked you to collect the urine. I would ask the doctor how to do it. Surely he or she must have some great suggestions or ask a nurse. I have no idea. It is a little easier collecting from boys rather than girls.
