Need Ideas for Snacks

I need ideas for snacks for ppcd. I am in a major pickle cause of the limitations I have. First no sugar and bread and crackers turn to sugar.This leaves out fruit but he can eat bananas since the protien in them outweigh the sugar. Second If he eats sugar like crackers with peanut butter the protien in the peanut butter off sets the sugar so his body can handle it. But ppcd put a major restriction on me today. no nuts at all. they have a child in there that is majorly allergic to nuts to the point it is deadly. and they want it ate with a spoon preferably. The only 4 ideas I can come up with is bananas, tuna crackers with tuna salad. Bologna and cheese. If this is all I send I am going to have one constipated child. HELP PLEASE I NEED IDEAS. I was going to use a lot of peanut butter snacks and peanuts and etc but now I am at a loss. And they have no way of heating their food.

I love the ideas keep them coming and fruit is out it is a natural sugar. I definately have more ideas than I started with. I am not so stumped now. Thanks guys

I would not think that no sugar means no fruit. Kids need fresh fruit and vegetables. Apple slices is one of the healthiest with the most fiber thing a kid can eat. I think when they say no sugar they mean no sugary cakes and candies. I would not take the no sugar thing so literallly.

ppcd = Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities?

~ Cream cheese in celery sticks, you can top them with raisins and call them "Ants on a Log."
~ Tuna and crackers ~ make the tuna mayo-less with ev olive oil, red wine vinegar and grated parmesan cheese.
~ Bologna, ham, beef, or turkey and cheese cubes or string cheese.
~ Yogurt and graham crackers.
~ Cheese and Ritz crackers.
~ Fresh veggies ~ baby carrots, celery stick, broccoli & cauliflower florets with ranch dip.
~ Get a container like a FUNtainer (made by Thermos) for kids, they can hold hot or cold food. They sell them at Target, come in bottles or jars, have different characters on them, and you can send soups or stews that if hot when you put them in should be warm at mealtime, or salads to be kept cold.
~ Salad with a bit of cubed ham or turkey and small cubes of cheese, with the dressing already mixed in.
~ Milk or a banana smoothie you make yourself from milk, a banana and some ice. Put it ice cold in a thermos bottle.
~ 100% juice, yes it does have natural sugars but will help keep him regular.
~If he does start to get constipated you might try Little Tummys Yummy Fiber Gummies, but they DO have corn syrup and sugar in them, also at Target.

And ask the school for ideas they have for snacks as well ✿

For your information, peanuts are not nuts. They are a legumes. So I would check and if the child has a nut allergy or peanut allergy. This could make a big difference.

Do some searches for quinoa salad recipes online. Quinoa is a complete protein. It's a super food! Kids tend to be picky so you will have to tweak it for your child. Make it up. If he she likes rice/pasta, quinoa is a great choice because it doesn't turn straight into sugar like rice and pasta. Maybe put in some natural ham cubes, cheese, veggies, lemon juice, olive oil, etc. I've never done this but try making it like mac and cheese? Or add pasta sauce and homemade meatballs. Get him a thermos bowl (don't buy the ones that are plastic on the inside, spend a little extra and get all metal). Our kids don't need plastic chemicals leaking into their foods. I think Coleman makes one for about $20. Does he like soup? What about homemade chicken tenders (cut them in strips, dip them in a blend of melted butter and honey (or just butter). Dredge them in plain raw oats that you have blended up in the food processor with some salt and spices). Pan fry them (if they are getting too brown and not cooked inside, throw them in the oven for a bit). This requires a little work so I tend to make a bunch and freeze the leftovers between waxed paper, then thaw them out and heat in a toaster oven for dinner. Maybe you can toss it right into a box and it will be thawed by lunch time. Can he have ranch dressing? I'm a huge fan of everything homemade. Much better for our sensitive children. He might like it better if he can dip. What about Applegate brand hot dogs? Or just plain meatballs in homemade pasta sauce?

Tuna/Chicken salad with sides of celery, carrots, cucumbers, etc. Your best bet is going to get him to learn to love quinoa. It will be a good substitute. Your whole family should be eating it. Great food.

Boiled eggs make for a good lunch. Or, deviled eggs, He might not like the pickles. Leave them out, if so. Hummus and veggies or take a whole wheat tortilla, spead it with hummus, roll it and cut it into sushi rolls. Check the ingredients though (or make it homemade). Not sure if the kid in the class is allergic to seeds (the tahini in the hummus). I make a black bean hummus that is really good and my kids eat it too.

What about beans? Can he have complex carbs? Does he like beans? If he can have the whole wheat tortillas (like I mentioned above) make quesadillas with refried beans and cheese. Those are good cold too. Hopefully this gets you started. We are dealing with food restrictions as well. It makes life MUCH, MUCH harder!!!!!

if they have such extream restrictions they would or should provide you with a list of foods that are acceptable and kid friendly. also i thought bananas were very high in sugar. like an potatoe they quickly turn to sugar in your system.

•Beef jerky is very low in fat and high in protein content. Beef jerky sticks are practical to carry around in a bag but tend to be expensive.
•Hard-boiled egg whites are delicious with salt and pepper and an easy snack to make.
•Cottage cheese, although quite tasteless, is a good source of protein. It is not expensive and can be found easily at grocery stores.
•Tuna can come in very small tins making it the perfect, portable snack. Salmon almost tastes too good to be healthy, but makes a nice change from tuna and is very high in protein.
•Chicken breast cooked beforehand and kept in Tupperware is great for a snack on the run.
•Cheese cubes are a good source of protein and a great comfort food.
•Low fat yoghurt is a refreshing snack any time of the day.
Greek yoghurt is high in protein low in carbs
Ham rolls, turkey or mortadela.

Hi, I eat very low carb and it is similar to this. You can google "low carb snacks" and get some suggestions to get you thinking. How about cheese sticks, cheese cubes, greek yogurt, jerky, lunch meat and cheese roll ups, deviled eggs, sugar free jello or pudding, pickles and olives, ham and turkey cubes, pepperoni, diced hot dogs, etc... I'm confused on what ppcd is? Is it a medical condition? or is the name of the child care place? You say something about his body being able to handle the sugar, but then state that ppcd put a no nuts restriction on?

what about celery and peanut butter? you said that it's allowed if it's eaten with a spoon. Celery is sugar free and the peanut butter would be giving the protein. Then, they can scoop it up with the celery. Jif has pb to go which is little individual containers so they could be tossed when it's over.

A strange food, but my little man loves crab. He's taking some imitation crab sticks in his lunchbox tomorrow. He will eat it all day if I would let him. It's high protein and no sugar, though I've heard it's high in sodium.

If ppcd is a medical condition is there a dietitian handy that you can talk to? My son sees a GI team and they have one that I can call any time with questions.
