Need Help with Transitioning My 1 Year Old from Bottle to Sippy Cup

I had to use the playtex straw-style sippy cups at first with my son. Apparently, you need to suck pretty h*** o* a bottle and when he would suck that h*** o* a standard sippy, he'd get too much and choke and then refused to try again. With the straw cup, things went more smoothly and we gradually worked in the Nuby and then the regular sippy cups.

My crazy doctor says sippy cups aren't necessary, that they are just for parents' convenience. She says try a standard cup with a tiny bit of water to start and you'll be amazed at how fast they progress. (No, I have not done this, but thought I would pass on the "professional" opinion.)

I took my little one to the store and let him pick out Spongebob sippy cups. Spongebob is his favorite so he was happy to drink from them. Maybe he would just like it if he picked out his own cups. There are cups with every conceivable character on t.v. Good Luck!

With my 2nd daughter I tried the sippy cups with the softer nipple or try the sippy cups with the straw. I forgot the name of the sippy cups with the soft nipple. I know that I bought them at Babies R us and walmart. They were advertized as the sippy cup without the instert. Rather than an insert they had a cap cover- similar to a bottle cover on them. I'll keep looking for the name of them. Wish I could be more help.

I used Avent bottles with the sippy cup top that replaced the nipples. You may also want to try a cup with the straw attached. My son liked that as well. I also began to replace one bottle at a time with a sippy cup and I was persistent and consistent. Good luck

There is no harm in continuing to use a bottle. He'll make the jump to a sippy (or a regular cup) when he's ready. Just be sure to give him only water in it at bedtime, to protect his teeth.

I too had a difficult time getting my daughter off the bottle. My daughter was 18 months when she finally took to the sippy cup. We always kept her bottles in the corner of our kitchen counter and she knew exactly where they were. One day I decided that enough was enough and I hid the bottles. She would ask for bah-bah and I would show her that they were gone. After some tantrums and crying she was thirsty enough to drink from a sippy cup. So I stopped cold turkey which is what you may need to do. Good Luck

My son also didn't want anything to do with a sippy cup. I tried all different kinds, even took him to let him pick his own cup out. The only one that I found worked was a brand called Nubi. They have a soft top that is more like a bottle. I think they sell them at Target. Good luck to you!

Have you tried drinking from one of his sippy cups in front of him? I found with my son that he wanted whatever I was doing - so I would drink from his cup and then he would drink from it. I would say just keep giving it to him with every meal and eventually he will get the hang of it.
