Hi Mamas - I need your help, I am in charge of D class room project for a silent auction. I got word late yesterday that I was the lucky mom :o) Any who I'm not a crafty person myself. I get $20 from the school towards it anything else out of my pocket which I'm ok with up to $50.
It is a class of 2nd graders I have picked a date a few weeks from today to go in and work with the kids on it. I need something easy enough to do, something cute and something I can do with the kids in an afternoon at school. Any ideas you have would be great or a website with instructions etc.

What about a step stool and have all the kids put a handprint on the stool then write their name on their handprint ? You can put the teachers name and year in the middle somewhere. Then varnish over the stool, dry & it's ready to go. You could have 4 or 5 colors for the kids to use.
You have to "make" a craft which will then be auctioned off? I am a little confused lol. The tile thing below sounds good. Another fun thing is to give the kids each a quare of a cotton sheeting material. all the same size say 12 inches by 12 inches. have the kids use fabric markers and decorate there square and sign it. then sew them together and make a quilt out of them. not a big intricate quilt just a rows of pictures and a backing. it will win the most money in your group.
My son did tile mosaic last year in grade two. Each student made a small individual piece to take home, and the class made a large piece for the school. These turned out quite beautiful. If you can find a place that will sell broken tile it would be cheap. There are lots and lots of websites with instructions.
Ooo, One of the baskets we did and it sold for so much, we could not believe it. Was a "Stone Soup Basket"
We purchased a hardback copy of this book. But there are many to choose from. But you could also have the children help write and draw their version of Stone soup. Assign them a page to tell their version. They can write their part and then do the illustration and make sure they sign it.
Have it bound.
One of the moms is an amazing potter, she r donated 4 of her soup bowls. We then had a child go to the creek that runs by the school and find a nice sized stone. (had them scrub and wash it.) and then found some primitive looking napkins.. From the "sale shelf" at World Market.
We found a perfect condition stainless steel ladle at Goodwill! $1.00!
We had a basket, lined it with 2 of the napkins, stacked 3 of the bowls, rolled up the other 2 napkins and tied them with ribbon. Then placed the stone in one of the bowls facing out towards the front of the basket. The Book was in the back, facing out. So it looked great on Both sides.
The Description tag explained that the Rock was a very special "Soup Rock" the basis for a delicious soup. The Rock was from (we named the creek). Named the mom that had made the bowls..(go to a pottery shop and look on their sale rack, you can even tell them you are doing this for a school, maybe they will donate some bowls. They do not need to match perfectly.
And we explained that there was a recipe in the book. We used a bit of jute rope to tie the cellophane with, but Rafia works just as well. with the ladle tied to the bow.. Remember to twist the cellophane and use tape around the twist and then tie the Jute, Ribbon or Rafia around it.
It hardly cost us anything. People were bidding on that basket all night long.

a really easy one is to precut construction paper or cardstock into strips. (you can find some already precut at craft stores) the kids can bring in pic of themselves or just decorate with magazine pictures, stickers , or small photos and then laminate the pieces leaving 1/4 to 1/2 space between each one. and they make nice book marks.
