I have a six 1/2 month old baby who I am trying to put on solids, because she seems to not get full on only breast milk. I have tryed both single grain oatmeal and rice cereals. However she will NOT take the oatmeal but she LOVES the rice cereal. But now my problem is that she has had diareha since about the time I started the rice cereal! (shes also teething and I've heard tha can cause diareha). Please HELP!!!

P.S. she isnt fond of any type formula in any type of bottle.

What can I do next?

Applesauce and sweet potatoes! Babies love them! There are so many food choices for them, but start out slow and wait a few days between trying something new. Use breast milk in the cereal, she'll eat it. Remember, babies aren't going to starve themselves, so follow her cues.

Hi M.
I have heard that teething can cause diareha due to excess saliva. Bananas are a great bowl binder and she can eat mashed up bananas at six months. Just about any mashed up fruit or veggies is fine. Baby foods are okay as well. I would just start with mashed bananas, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes. GOod luck.

I was in the same situation that you are in. I was starting to feel like my son was eating me out of house and home. He was still gaining weight but it was too much for me. He was eating every 90 minutes. He also will not take formula. If he even sees a bottle he will start to cry and refuses it. When I first started my son on the single grain rice cereal he had diarrhea also but that did stop and he actually became constipated. Teething can also cause diarrhea, at least it does with my son that is my first sign. My son only likes a few of the jar baby foods and that makes it hard. But I did find this fresh food feeder that he really enjoys. You can but just about anything in it (age appropriate). This is one of the best things I have ever used. It’s even great for teething you can put frozen watermelon or ice chips and it helps sooth the gums. It really works for my son. I attached a link check it out.

Six and a half months is plenty old enough to start baby food. Veggies and fruits. My children started on fruits and veggies at four months and were eating regular table food by about eight months. Babies need more than just milk exspecially by her age. Just start trying different foods....she's ready! :)

Have you tried pumping your milk and then adding the cereal?

I started my baby on solids at 5 1/2 months.... When you start on cereal and oatmeal, be sure to give them either 1 or the other for a few days before switching or trying something else. That way if they have a reaction to it you will know which one is causing it.....The diareha could have been caused from one of the foods, (or the teething).
If she wont take the oatmeal, just give her the cereal and try the oatmeal again in a week or so....
With her not taking formula, try mixing it in with the cereal and see if she will take it that way....

Hi M.,
I really never heard of teething causing diarrhea. Only fevers and discomfort. Motrin is best for teething. If you just started the rice cereal and she had the diarrhea, her body is just probably getting use to the consistancy and is adjusting. Try giving her a little bit of the baby food banana desert and see if that will help with the diarrhea. Also, when I started my son on solids, he was really fond of the sweet potato. The diarrhea will go away. Best wishes,G.

Not sure what you started your 4 year old on first, but I have always been told by pediatricians to start with the cereals (rice first) and then as far as jar foods go start with your yellow veggies, then green and then throw in the fruits saving bananas for last. The reason for this is so that they learn to like the veggies, no sweetness, and then get rewarded with the fruit, kinda like candy.
Diarraeh can be caused by teething.
