I am a working mom whom is extremely unhappy at my job. I am looking to change employment and wondered if anyone had any ideas. I am very employable. I have a bachelors degree and a paralegal certificate. My job is greatly affecting my home life. I come home stressed out and upset most days of the week. I feel like my husband and my 4year old daughter suffer because of my job. If anyone can help that would be great. They always say it is not what you know, but who you know that gets the job.

So What Happened?

I am sorry it has taken so long to get back to everyone. I appreciate all of your support. I would have loved to be the one to stay home with my daughter and start my own business, but I have to be the one that carries the insurance for our family. My husband's job simply does not have a plan. He works for a very small company. I appreciate all the suggestions. I have gotten a new job and I am happier than ever. I love my new job. I work for USAA and they are wonderful. I can't tell you how awesome it is to go to work and enjoy my job. I don't think that I have ever had a job that I loved so much. Again thanks for all of your support.

Maybe you need a break from working with people. I'm a veterinary technician and I love that my interaction is primarily with animals. Like most jobs though, there are good days and not so great ones. It's about finding balance. Don't feel bad for wanting a change. The average person makes a complete career change something like 7 times in their life.

Maybe you could try an online career quiz like the kind you do in high school to see what types of career fields relate to your interests.

Hi A.! I read your message and just had to respond to you. I can SO empathize with you! When I turned 30 a year and a half ago, I felt like I was going to have a nervous break-down! I had so many goals I had set for myself "by the time I turned 30." I have a BA in Communications, and had given up my career in Public Relations and Corporate Communications to stay home with my son (now 4 years old.) But, I had to give up my job because I was so stressed out all the time, and found myself taking it out on my family. It's not a fun feeling to hurt those you love the most.
Anyway, I just felt like I had a lot in common with you because before my career in PR, I also worked in a law office. :)
But, I am so happy and love my life now! I work two businesses part time from home, and get to stay home full time with my two boys. I love it. I think the key to finding your happiness, is finding something that you truly enjoy doing and feel passionate about. I work as a Wine Consultant for WineShop At Home, and a skin care rep for Arbonne International. If you have any questions about either of those businesses, please feel free to contact me at: ____@____.com or ###-###-####. Or you can visit my websites at: www.wineshopathome.com/mandyolsen or www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com.
Really, I just want to let you know that you're not the only one out there who feels like you do. I've certainly been there before. Just know that sometimes it takes a big change in your life (like quitting your job and doing something you love) to find true happiness. Good luck!
Sincerely,
M. O.

Hi A.,
I am so sorry that you and your family are having such a difficult time. I can relate because I needed to go back to work and had such a hard time transitioning. I was stressed for hours before I had to leave and stressed when I got home thinking about the job. So now I stay home and have a home based business. There are a lot of them out there to choose from but I chose to do Shaklee nutritional products because they have been around for 50 years, their products work for me and all the people who I introduced to them, and best of all, I get to make money by hanging out with other moms and kids and helping other moms be able to stay home like me. If you call me for more information, I promise I will tell you what I know and then let you work it out for yourself, I am not and have never been a hard salesperson. I simply share my story and trust that those people who need that information will ask me more. My number is ###-###-#### and my website is www.shaklee.net/integralhealing.

Hi A.. You've had a ton of replies and I just read through them all. I manage a law firm in downtown Phoenix. I've been in the legal industry for nearly 20 years. I'm a single mom and, yes, job stress definitely affects your home life. While I can appreciate all of the offers of these ladies to start your own home business, that doesn't pay the bills while you're building your business. I, too, have a business from home and should be able to retire from my job within the next 24 months. Yes, it's that good! But in the meantime, someone has to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head. My firm is the most amazing place in the legal community (yes, I'm prejudice!) but I have been with the senior partner of my firm for nearly 15 years now. He's the best, as are the rest of the partners. I don't have any openings at this time but I would suggest Sonja Cotton (someone else suggested her and she happens to be a friend of mine -- she is great); also Kerry's Referrals or Robert Half Legal are both huge agencies in town for law firms. In terms of a home-based business, if you're really interested in something legitimate in the health and wellness industry (it's touted to be the next trillion dollar industry!) feel free to email me at ____@____.com's also our website if you want to look up the law firm. I've been a skeptic about home-based businesses; and I have a pretty decent salary to replace. But this company was just different in ever respect -- especially how we get paid! One of my partners is a captain for United Airlines and another was a head honcho in the telecommunications industry. So we're attracting some pretty big-dollar people. That made me believe it will work. I've done pretty well considering I've been on my own since my kids were 6 months old and 22 months old respectively. But now it's time to be at home with them!! That's my goal anyway. Feel free to contact me any time. And give those agencies a call. You'll certainly find something!! Best of luck to you. M.

Get out immediately-it's not worth it. I am speaking from experience. I am a single mom/realtor and about 8 months ago I quit my job as a realtor's assistant for a top realtor in town. I had worked for him for 1.5 years and had learned a lot, however, we was the most abusive boss I have ever had. I was always upset and I definitely brought the tension/stress home. I felt like I was so impatient with my son. So one day I had had it and so I quit on the spot and without anything else lined up. Some thought that it was irresponsible...but it was the best decision I could have made. I went out on my own in real estate-and although I have had difficult times..its all been worth it. I am in such a better place. Things always work out-you have to trust that.

With regard to work....Marcia Owen (temp/staffing agency). You could start there. Nothing wrong with temping. It can help you get your foot in the door. You can always look for jobs while you are temping. It is a solution temporarily so that you can chage your current situation. You deserve more than this. Life is too short to be miserable.

Good Luck!

I just read through all of your responses and it seems like there are tons of stay-at-home opportunities out there. I almost didn't respond because I thought you might be overwhelmed, but I'm going to put it out there anyway. I've been going through nursing school for 2 1/2 years (took one semester off to have my second child and recently missed graduating by a few points so I'll be finishing up next Fall). The opportunity came to me to do direct sales, and at first thought it was corney! After failing my last semester, the opportunity knocked again and this time I thought why not... I've got nothing better to do. So, I started selling lia sophia jewelry (it's very knew to the Arizona area). I wasn't a jewelry person until I saw this jewelry... now it's all about the jewelry! Anyway, I started my business this past February and I'm loving it. No, it's not going to pay all the bills right now, but I've just started and I'm making a decent income and I determine how much I want to work. I now have 3 children who I can stay at home with and 1 or 2 nights a week I can get out and have some fun and make some money (my daughter loves the jewelry, too). I don't plan on making this my full time job because I've worked so hard for my nursing degree, but I do plan on continuing with it because they have great benefits including health care, awesome discounts, and opportunities to earn lots of FREE jewelry and trips. My manager started out to pay off credit card debt and now 4 years later is making an awesome income and her husband works less, too! Feel free to contact me if you want more information@ ____@____.com lastly, do the research on any stay-at-home business! You certainly don't want to give yourself a bigger headache than you already have at your current job!! Good luck!

Hi A. R. - I couldn't help but respond to your blog... I was in the same situation as you this past year. I made some changes in my life and tomorrow is my last day in my corporate job. I started a home based business with Cookie Lee Fine Fashion Jewelry and now I'll be doing it full-time. I started 2 years ago and thought I would only do it on the side as a hobby but then my job took a dump and I was completely unhappy so I made some strides to build it so I could do it fulltime. I to have a bachelors degree in Finance/Accounting and always thought I would be in the Corporate world, NEVER in my life did I think I was going to do something like this. I am 39 and will be 40 in July, so I was thinking maybe I was going through a "mid-life crisis". Now before you dismiss this opportunity give it some serious thought. I know some women who were determined enough and was able to make the transition in just a couple of months. I don't think of it as a "Sales" job. The jewerly is just a vehicle for much more that this company has to offer. I have never met a better and empowering group of women and it has basically cured my depression that I've had for years and has completely changed my outlook on life. My husband is excited for my new adventure (especially after I just took him on my first trip that I won through the company to Jamaica.) And after 18 years we are falling in love with eachother again!

I would love to talk to you more about it.... NO OBLIGATIONS WHAT SO EVER. Just girl talk....

Call me if you'd like to learn more.

I am sorry that you are so unhappy with your job. I totally understand how that can destroy a person. It sounds like you have a lot of options on where you can go from here. Please let me add my two cents on my experience. I left my job at CPS as a caseworker almost three years ago to stay home with my kids. I started looking seriously into different types of at home jobs and after months of researching and soul-seeking I decided to start my own Mary Kay business. When you have a Mary Kay business you are truly your own boss and immediately become part of the Mary Kay family of women who want you to suceed and help you to realize your dreams for your family, whatever they are. Mary Kay is one of a VERY few at home businesses that is not a pyramid scheme or multi-level marketing. Mary Kay sells professional quality products and is the best-selling brand of cosmetics since 1994. You don't need to be a "sales person" to do this business, which is great because I am so not a sales type person coming from a social work background. You sound like a very wise lady and I am sure that you will end up where you are supposed to be. Please call me at ###-###-#### or email me at ____@____.com if you would like more information about Mary Kay. Best wishes for you and your family!

Hi Allison,
Depending on what income you need, let me suggest public schools or a private school. An educational Assistant or a librarian recieves benifits and almost a living wage. The other great part is that you have the same days off and your workday is the same length. I worked as a teacher in the same schools with my children. You don't want to be TOO available, but it is good to see how you can support and socialize your own child, appropriate expectations to set, and gives your child a great sense of security. Also, you know what their world is like every day. In a private school, the salary is much different, but perhaps you could do legal work in exchange for tuition/partial salary? It's a thought.

Thought Number 2: don't be afraid to get support you need. Can you hire a housekeeper? Could that person cook or start dinner for you a couple of nights a week? Do you have to opportunity to detox for a few minitues (30) before you switch roles? Who does the shopping, cooking, bill paying, budgeting, laundry, and toilet scrubbing. If you are working, you are contributing to your family and shouldn't have to do all the grunt work too. If possible, hire help and sream line so the time you spend with your family is time that nourishes your relationships and family life.

I had worked in the legal field for the last 16 years and since having my child directed my efforts more towards billing. I use timeslips and quickbooks to perform AR/AP functions for 3 different companies...ALL FROM HOME. Perhaps you could get started doing something like this.

I performed the billing function at my legal job (in Flagstaff), and when I left (we moved out of state) I continued to perform the same function. Then by chance I have engaged 2 more business (completely different types of offices) to perform their billing functions. The time demand it not much (I would estimate no more than 40 hours/month - TOPS), but most of the work comes during the last week/first week of each month - of course. Of course the income is not equal to working full time either, though.

Seems to be quite the need for billing assistance in small offices. You could advertise locally or through the Court House (if you want to continue to work with lawyers), etc.

Good luck, whatever you may choose.

A. R,
JUST START PUTTING YOURSELF OUT THERE!! Take a day off and go to a job agency, take care of yourself. You can't be healthy (physically and emotionally) for your family if you don't take care of yourself. If you are currently working in a law firm I know how difficult that can be (the environment) and it doesn't have to be. I had a really secure job with a City Government office, good benefits, holidays, flex-schedule, the works, but I was very unhappy, bad environment also. I started looking and asking questions about work places and finally left the city government job. I HAVE BEEN SO HAPPY!!! Not everyday is perfect but the perfect days vs. the bad days are good=99 bad=1, no kidding. If your employer doesn't take care of your needs (within reason of course) then it isn't worth taking care of of your bosses needs, you'll end up coming out with nothing in the end. It's not worth destroying your family environment when your managers probably go home worry free. Good Luck.
