Need Guidance on Formula Quantity for 4-Mo Old and Tips for Feeding Fussy Eater

Hi - we're on a schedule that has my twins currently eating 5 times per day (7 AM/11 AM/3 PM/7 PM/11 PM). One eats on average about 5 1/2 ounces per feed and the other around 6 ounces. Is this amount okay? Too little? Too much? How do I know when to give more? How much more?

Also, one of the twins is a very fussy eater. He eats 3 or 4 ounces, burps, and then refuses the bottle. I have to walk him around to get him to eat the rest of his bottle. Anyone ever experience this? I can't let him just eat 3 or 4 ounces so I do what I can to have him eat more. Please let me know if you have any thoughts as to what could be wrong and tips for how to get him to eat more.

Thanks!

Honestly, 3 to 4 ozs is alot. You have to remember that their tummy's are only the size of their fist. Don't force feed them. When they refuse the bottle it means their full and stop. My 7 mo old will only eat 4 oz or so at a time and goes 4 or so hours between feedings. Don't worry about how many oz their eating, and if their not finishing bottles. Their eating just fine and when they are full they'll stop eating. As long as they continue to gain weight their perfectly healthy.

How old are your twins? I have twin girls that were born December 19th, 2007 - 6 weeks early. They are almost eating 4oz. They aren't on a structured schedule but typically feed at 5:30am, 8:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, 5:30pm, 8:30pm, and then between 12am - 2am and then again at 5:30ish...

S., The rule of thumb ios that an infant usually takes about 1/2 ounce of formula for every pound that they weigh. For example: an 8 pound baby should take about 4 ounces! However this is just a guideline and you have to see how your child responds to the quanity. DO not hesitate to adjust to smaler amount BUT be careful of not giving too much which will lead to overfeeding, irritability, and excessive spitting up.

Sounds like you have them on a great schedule. I had a similar problem with my daughter when she was an infant. My doctor said by 4 months if they are holding their own heads up fine you can wait until the end of the bottle to burp them and not to do it in between. Once they are able to hold their heads up and straighten their backs they can let gas out by themselves if really needed. Good luck!

As long as they are having wet diapers, regular bm, and are growing, I would not worry about it. It seems that you have them on a pretty good schedule.

Hi S.
I have three month old twins and they are doing the same thing. My son eats about 5 1/2 ounces, where as his sister will eat between 3-4 1/2 ounces, he was the bigger twin at birth. When he was in the NICU they taught encouraged me to twist the bottle while it was in his mouth and talk directly to his face that will keep him eating. Good Luck!
