Need Full-day Summer Camp for 11 Yr Old Boy (Plano/Rich/Garland)

Looking for all-day summer camp opportunities for 11 yr old boy. Finding so many that have unfriendly working-parent hours. Need something that runs all day, or if not all day, has after-care. Tried some of the Richardson parks/recs, and Y last summer, too boring, too many arts/crafts for kids liking. Kid is more sports inclined (i.e. fishing, football, track, basketball). No interest in anything academically-oriented. Tried the Mavs Hoop camp for last 2 summers, doesn't want to do a 3rd summer. Lifetime Fitness was a hit, but adds up at $300+/wk for the whole summer. Must be within transportable range of Plano/Richardson/Garland/NDallas. Will be doing away camp Kiowa for one week with a friend. But at $1200/wk, can't do that all summer. Did try one of the Plano parks and recs outdoor full-day options, all kid got was lots of bug bites. So he doesn't want to go back to that.

What can I do next?

Eagles Wings Athletics offers great summer camps all summer long, they have different themes each week, and it is all indoors except the waterslide day, so no bug bites. In the past years, they have always had on water day each week where they rent a big water slide, they also have rock climbing and karate each day. www.eagleswingsathletics.com sign up now for the lowest rates.

Good luck finding something!

I saw something on the news this morning at DallasParks.org you just click on programs and then on send a kid to camp they have 17 sites/locations. It seemed like they do alot of different activities, and they said it is free. I think it last for 8 weeks

If he likes sports-the Sportplex Valley View reopened under new management(great people) last year. They have all day camps of all sorts of sports-you can give them a call at ###-###-####. Jesuit Sports Camps are great as well and they have extended day on some of the camps-you can go to www.jesuitcp.org and click on sports. Hope that helps-it does get expensive!

Hi, L.!

My 8 year old goes to DeGroot Academy in Plano (located near Coit and Park). It is open from 7:30 - 6:00 daily. Mom owned and run...

They have lots of activities, although not necessarily sports. They swim every day (weather permitting), roller skate, bowl, practice martial arts (Tae Kwon Do if I remember correctly), and do all sorts of other fun things. They end the summer with a day trip to Hurricane Harbor and a lock in. My daughter loves it!

The price is $795/mo. for June and July, and you can either go week to week in August, or pay for the entire month (which is less expensive).

Hope this helps!

Try going to dallaschild.com. On the left-hand toolbar, click on "The Source" and then click on the "Camp Guide" link under Activities.

Plano Parks and Recreation offers Camp Cimarron with before and after camp care (times from 7am-6pm). The price is very reasonable and you can sign up on a week by week basis. My kids (now ranging from 8-13) have gone for the past 3 years and love it. It's very popular, however, so check it out soon and sign up if you're interested because the spots will disappear (especially the before and after camp care).

I'm not sure how close you live to Wylie, but they have a great program called the Wylie Wave for $90 a week. It's open to non-residents for registration April 21st. The hours are 7:00-6:00 daily. More info at city of Wylie website.

Have you tried the Plano YMCA at Legacy? They have lots of outdoor summer activities. My son is the same way; he doesn't care for the arts and crafts stuff (he's 11). Also the Plano Sports Authority has various indoor classes that end around noon or so. After that, they have a flex plan that provides different sports kids can do plus lunch is provided. My only suggestion is to do the Y camp early in the summer as kids are outside all day. They do have indoor camps but not as many activities.

Last summer my son was taking swim lessons at TI on Central and MidPark. They had a sign up for summer care that was extremely reasonable. I forget how much, but it was much cheaper than anything I had seen. Their hours were also good, something like 7 or 7:30 am to 6 pm with no extra charge.

We're not taking lessons there this summer, but you may want to call the Dallas Texans Activity Center at ###-###-#### and see what they have to offer.

Hi L.,

I am in the same boat with an 11 year old boy (will be twelve in June). We are going to try the YMCA teen camp for most of the summer. I'm hoping the Teen camp will be better than the younger age camps there - this one is held at the Russell Creek location. This will be the first year at the YMCA though - he outgrew the daycare center he went to previous summers, so I have nothing to compare it to. Summers are so expensive for working parents!!

The University of Gymnastics in East Plano on Summit has a pretty good camp. They swim in the indoor pool each day and have lots of activities for them and I know they do offer after care.

Lifetime Fitness is the best we have found, though. Pricey, but everything similar is...I'm in the wrong business!
