My daughter will be starting Kindergarten in a few weeks and I need to start labelling her clothes and 'stuff'. Can any of you recommend a good labelling system, ideally one with labels that are washable but that could, possibly be removed when recycling her clothes, and the best place to buy a labeller?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't recommend a sharpie because it bleeds and will rub off of things like pencil boxes eventually. If you can find a Rub A Dub sharpie (usually at a fabric store) they stay on better and bleed less. I've heard good things about Mabel's Labels. I'm actually waiting for them to reply about removing iron on tags because I do consignment for most of our kids clothes. But they do stickers that are dishwasher safe as well as clothing & shoe labels.

My favorite labels are from a Canadian company called Mabel's Labels. They come in a lot of configurations, last through the washing machine and the dishwasher but can be removed. The level of residue left depends on the material to which it is applied.

I use their standard adhesive labels for everything and have been really happy.

I have found that you can tape a very thin piece of cloth/fabric you can onto a piece of paper and run it through the printer. Print out the names repeated on that sheet. It depends on what kind of printer you have because some ink does not "stick" as well to the cloth/fabric and wears out or washes out easily. So I wash & dry the sheet of fabric AFTER I print on it and she how well it took. If It looks good I then cut it into sections and do a simple hand sewing in the labels either on the tag or next to it. With a specail de hemmer tool (a small seem puller) I take them off when she out grows the clothes.

Mom,
I think the only thing they want labeled are her jackets, sweaters or coats, and if you send in an extra full set of clothing in a big ziploc, (in the event she needs to change at school) inside of backpack and lunchbox if she eats lunch there. I work in a preschool and initials only are what we ask. You can go to Michaels or Walmart craft dept and get a laundry pen that is washable. Black Sharpies work well too Mom so if you have some that will do. Most parents just label the inside neck tag or the washing instruction tag which is also on the side sometimes or neck. Some parents write the entire 1st or last name (whichever is shortest), others do only initials rather than the whole first/last name in case you do want to pass the clothing on. Good luck to your little girl in kindergarten, how fun for her to start school.
