Need Advice - My 18 Month Old Keeps Getting Sick!

I really need help - my daughter keeps getting sick! She is 18 months old and in daycare and I know part of it has to be her being around other kids and germs at daycare every day. An example is in the month of October she was at the doctor's office three times and the ER once. She has a reoccuring cough (since approx 6 months old) and sometimes needs breathing treatments (has not been diagnosed with asthma though). In early October she was treated for a chest infection, two ear infections, and also had a bad infection (swab was negative for the flu although she had all the symptims and I couldn't her fever below 104 for two days, even with Motrin) That was 10 days ago and now she had a fever again at daycare (101.2) so I had to pick her up today and she needs to be out again tomorrow (must be fever free for 24 hours before going back). I am really frustrated and don't know what to do. Our pediatrician does not over-prescribe antobiotics and in most cases she has had viruses so we just have to wait it out. We eat organic, lots of fruits and vegetables, healthy meats and salads. She does not have juice or soda (only water and organic whole milk). I don't think it's her diet....has anyone been through this? O know toddlers get sick but it's getting pretty ridiculous and I feel so bad for her. I really don't think she's been 100% healthy since starting daycare but I want her to be outgoing and around other kids so I don't think the nanny route is for us. I am open to any and all advice!! THANKS!

What can I do next?

Maybe try taking her to see Dr. Ber. He is a homeopathic MD in Scottsdale who is really good at finding causes to illnesses. Or if perhaps she is allergic to something... in her environment, or in what she is eating. It sounds like you are feeding her great, but she could still have a sensitivity to something like chicken (even if it is organic). Anbd Dr. Rapp is great too (like the other poster mentioned). If you want Ber's number, let me know. He is very, very good.

Hi J.,

You story sounds just like my story with my daughter last year. We eat just like you and our pediatrician practices the same way. We even had a few trips to PCH and a nebulizer for awhile. Eventually it just ran its course and she stopped getting sick. No breathing treatments for months now. Her ped suggested taking the vaporizer out of her room, we added a good quality fish oil for inflammation, ginger and tumeric (anti oxidants) to tea or her hemp milk, and a high quality vitamin and mineral supplement. Whether she just stopped getting sick or these things helped I'll never know but at any rate, there is likely light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck! PS: consider taking out dairy for awhile to see if that helps with post nasal drip (persistent coughing) my daughter like hemp milk and I hear that the multigrain milk from trader joes is pretty good with a cheaper price tag.

IANAD, but this seems fairly normal (staying alert with the fevers). Her immune system should become very robust over time and she won't miss any days in elementary school.

This can be very frustrating but does your daughter have frequent ear infections? those will cause fever and flu like symptoms, also you mentioned whole milk, that can add to mucous production when my kids are coughing or congested we cut out milk from their diet until the mucous dries up. on the plus side, I know its hard now but with your daughter being around all the sick kids now later she wont get sick as much, my kids were constantly sick at day care but now they are 8 and 15 and in all those years they have only missed a total of maybe 3 days of school each! (my 15 year old is a freshman and my 8 year old is in 3rd grade) GOOD LUCK! I know how hard this can be!

I offer child care in my home. I have 2 young children (15 months and 3yrs) and I currently care for 2 children part time (20 months and 14 months) and have one opening. I am located at I17 and Cactus. My rates are $25.00 per day for over 5 hours, $15.00 per day under 5 hours.

A little about me - I am a Christian SAHM of 4 (2 older and 2 younger) and I also serve in childrens' ministry in my church. I have great references and reasonable rates.

I would go to Sprouts and get some herbal supplements to help boost her immune system so she is not so susceptible to catching whatever is going around. Even though you diet is excellent, we can't get all we need from food alone and with the flu season upon us and her being in daycare and exposed to more things, you'll need to boost her immune system. I give my girls "Planetary Herbals" "well child" (Echinacea-elderberry herbal syrup and "Kids' Immune Protect" (astralagus root combo) also lots of vitamin C, vitamin E, Vitamin D and Hydrosol Silver nose spray. Silver kills almost every bacteria, virus and fugus known to man on contact, it's a little pricey but WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY. You can use it to treat an existing infection or as a preventitive measure. Just ask the experts at Sprouts. I love that store. If you have any more questions, just email me. THanks R.

Hi J.,

Been through this with my youngest. Not to scare you or anything, but I think you really need to go to another doctor. My son had a cough, stuffiness so bad that we had to put him in his car seat to sleep because he had trouble breathing. Took him to the doctor every week. Same thing my doctor didnt prescribe. The doctor called me paranoid. kept telling me that it was just baby noise. Kept telling me that my son had allergies and just calm down and learn to deal with it. Well I am a mother and I knew something was wrong. Well we continued on the way the doctor had said for allergies and he seem to be getting worse. So on a trip to my moms to visit I took him to the ER. Thank God I did. They took him out of my arms into the Xray room and then came out and told me that the reason why he was coughing and stuffy was because he was drowning in his own fluids. His lungs were full of liquid. They said they needed to do a spinal tap on him because they thought he had menangitis also. That came back negative. But they admitted him immediatley. They told me if I would have waited two more days I would have lost my son. They had him in there for 2 weeks on IV antibiotics. The head doctor called our doctor and told him they were going to take him to the board for malpratice. That was such a horrible deal. I felt like a failing mom because I listened to my doctor instead of my gut. The doctor in the hospital told me, Is all the doctor needed to do was do a simple Xray and run some blood tests and my son would have been diagnosed correctly then. But the doctors now a days are so lazy they dont do all what they should do to help our children. So please dont go through what I did and find another doctor and demand xrays and blood work on your baby. If anything it cant hurt. And it will give you piece of mind that you did everything you could. Well good luck

Hi J.,
Sorry to hear about your daughter being under the weather. Although i did not place my 2 kids in daycare at that age, they did go through a phase when they were about 3 when they seemed repeatedly sick and had similar high fevers that get pretty scary. Seems like you are doing everything right. Three things - 1) to help her breathe more effortlessly, maybe try a humidifier with essential oils that help clear, like eucalyptus, or mints, oregano, or even lavender; 2) a pennyroyal tea tepid bath is great for bringing down fevers and even works on those scary ones - you can do it with Tylenol or Motrin too; 3) my daughter, who is now 13, seemed to be stuffed up for years, from the moment she was born until recently. It was not until a few years ago that it dawned on me why she was stuffy - she is allergic to cats and we had a cat those early years. Part of your daughter's breathing issues might be related to a source you have yet to discover. Don't lose hope! It helps to envision all these illnesses as making her immune system stronger later in life, although it's hard to see that now, when she is cranky and you have to go to work. Hang in there - after about 5 yrs old, my kids just stopped getting sick, and have been mildly ill about every other year since. Oh, for the ear infections - i found the greatest homeopathic orally-administered drops by NatraBio that always helped my son's ear infections at the co-op in Albuq. My son had ear infections from about 6 months old to a bit over a year old. How they stopped and never returned was because I happened to take him with me to my chiropractor at the time, Javan Oston in Albuq, and Javan extremely gently moved the bones in his head that had been squashed together during his breech home birth and were not allowing ear fluids to pass through normally. Since then, my son has never had a screaming pain ear infection ever again. Hope this helps. Peace to you. J.

How many children are in her daycare? Are the other children going there sick all the time also? Ask the daycare if they clean, & santize their toys daily? You should get your child both the " Flu shot & the "H1N1" shot, just as another way to keep your child healthy. Also, make sure they & yourselves are always washing her hands.
Good luck.

A friend of mine had similar problems with her daughter being sick all of the time in a child care center. She moved her to a Family Child Care home, where she was still in a safe learning environment with other children - but fewer children and fewer germs. It helped her health tremendously!

My daughter used to get sick a lot as well and I was tired of it so I took her to see Dr. Mitchell at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Scottsdale. They did a total health analysis on her from everything she had had since birth. Very thorough and they actually listened and put the puzzle pieces together. After the full analysis we cut dairy out of her diet, reduced gluten and wheat, and put her on natural children's formulated vitamin C, omega fatty acids, and probiotics. This was in June of this year and my daughter has not been out of daycare due to sickness since (it was every other week before). You really need a full analysis and another opinion. The website to the college is posted. I really hope you get to the bottom of your baby's illness and wish you the best!

Your daughter's story sounds exactly like the story of my two boys. They were both plagued with everything from constant ear infections, strep throat, coughing, wheezing, and one even had croup twice. I swear I had a standing appointment with one or the other at the pediatrician's office. Of course when one had something the other one got it too. Our counter was constantly lined up with antibiotics, Tylenol, decongestants, steroids (at times), inhalers and nebulizers. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why my children always seemed to be sick! Until I read the book, "Is This Your Child?" by Doris Rapp, M.D.
It's about discovering and treating unrecognized allergies in children and adults. Dr. Rapp is a board certified environmental medical specialist and pediatric allergist for children. My kids major symptoms were classic for those of allergies. There are so many things in our environment that children can react to. One of the things I did for my children (as we all should) was to change what I was exposing my children to. I stopped bringing chemically based cleaning and personal care products into our home. My youngest son, who had the worst reactions, was using a nebulizer twice a day at school and was able to stop using it completely after clearing our home of chemicals. I can't express enough how passionate I am about this topic. You can read more about how chemcials affect our health at my website: www.GreenKidzRUs.com
Since chilren are still developing their brains, organs and systems, we need to give them the best opportunity for health as we can. Their immune systems are also immature. Once thing I found to be of great assistance for my children was Probiotics. Not only did it help them with their digestive difficulties but it gave their immune system a boost by adding the beneficial flora to their intestinal tract. Did you know a large part of the immune system is located in or near the intestinal tract and helps prevent microorganisms in the intestine from entering into the rest of the body?

I'm happy to report that my two boys have been enjoying good health for several years. The improvement and return to health was dramatic and almost immediate after taking the steps described above. For goodness sakes, we've all heard about "Going Green" and that's what I did 8 years ago without even knowing it. Of course, main stream hadn't heard of it yet. I'm passionate about telling other moms my story (my children's story). Watch some of the videos on my website and you'll be nodding your head in agreement. Then if you want me to show you what I did to "go green" the simple, easy way you can contact me through my website.

Hi J.- my first born daughter was constantly sick from 10 months until almost 2 years old and She was not in day care. I kept records after records of her illnesses because I could understand how a child could be sick so often. She ended up getting a battery of testing done because her weight kept fluctuating. Everything ended up coming out fine. There are pediatric immunologists that you can talk to your pediatrician about. My daughter saw an immunologist during this time. Your pediatrician can also possibly do booster immunization shots that might help. The good news...my daughter is significantly healthier now and apparently for no reason. She turned 2 and our trips to the doctor were dramatically reduced to well checks and maybe 1 or 2 sick visits. Hang in there. Your little girl might need a little extra time build up immunity to some of these illnesses.
