Hi Moms,
I have 13 year old daughter that is very involved in competitive cheerleading. She tumbles alot and has been complaining of her back hurting for several months. I need to have her seen, but I don't know what kind of doctor to take her to. Any suggestions? I am in the Tomball area.

Thanks

My step daughter used to pitch for softball and had some lower back issues as well. We took her to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. I don't have his name anymore, but he was in the medical center and I believe he was affiliated with Texas Children's. Luckily, it turned out that he just told her to take Aleve and that seemed to usually help her. You might try that and see if it helps your daughter at all. I don't know that I'd want to just take her to a chiropractor, if I were you. Good Luck and I hope her back is feeling better soon!

T.,

At first blush, I could'nt help but think of the situation I am in with my 14 year old son. You should definately have her seen in order to avoid any "real" problems in her future. It could be nothing, but knowledge is power! My son is very active in many sports and had been complaining of mild back pain for a few months before he had some crippling pain suddenly after just a few quick moments on the basketball court one day (about 1-2 months ago). Turns out he has a fracture on his spine called a "pars defect". Google it if you are interested. He is currently working with a physical therapist at TX Sports Med in Tomball. Apparently, his PT has numerous patients in that age group with this same diagnosis (you will understand why if you read more about it online). I hope this is not the case with your daughter, but it is repetition/sports driven and usually happens to "kids" between 13-18 if I remember correctly. If you want to rule it out, she'll need a series of Xrays and possibly a bone scan and/or CT scan if a possible fracture shows up on the Xray. Feel free to email me directly if you need more info. I don't have a DR to reccommend in the area... I took my son to a spine specialist down at the Med Ctr. The Dr we went to does not normally see "kids" but took us because of the referral of my brother in law - who is also an orthopedic surgeon, but in FL. I do know that TX Sports Med in Tomball works closesly with many orthopedic Dr's... you could call them for a referral. Good luck and i hope it's nothing!

Dr. Jason Minogue at Houston Spinal Care is excellent. He is in northwest Houston at 5715 NW Central Dr. suite F-111. His number is ###-###-####.
Our family has been going there for about 2 years now. They have a very warm and friendly office staff, especially Jena. She really goes above and beyond and always says, "It's my pleasure". Dr Jason is very easy to talk to and explains alot about chiropractic. We love them.

My 11 year old does competitive gymnastics and we've done a couple of things for some of her back issues. We have a chiropractor near the house that we love - Dr. Scott Bolz at Spring Chiropractic. He's great and has been very helpful with various back issues in our family. However, if it's not just an adjustment that she needs, you might want to consider a sports medicine doctor. We went to a great one in Tomball - near the hospital. Lone Star Sports Medicine. They've always been great. :)
