Natural Relief for Breast Soreness

Each month, a week or two before my period starts, my breasts hurt so much. They're very tender and it's very uncomfortable for me to wear my bra. The pain just seems to be getting worse each month. When I went for my annual check up, my doctor said I may still have milk. After 5 1/2 years! I just want to know if anyone has experienced this and if there's a natural way to relieve the pain. Should I try to pump?
I've been diagnosed with hypothroidism a couple of months ago, and once my period starts my breasts are fine.

What can I do next?

I have the same problem and I had no idea that it could be milk - it has also been 5 1/2 years for me. I am now going to look more into it instead of just assuming that my body is changing with age. Thank you.

Some of us women are just over hormoned. I had the same problem and the only thing that made me feel better was a hot bath. Of course I use any excuse to get in a hot bath and you may want to try hot towels. I never heard of carrying milk for 5 1/2 years, mine did it before I ever had kids.

Read up on what a large amount of hormones can do to you symptom wise. Do or did you have to take a high dose birth comtrol pill? What did your mom go through pre, peri and into menopause. I spend most of the day (and night) soggy from hot flashes and I took very high doses of hormones until I had a hysterectomy to control bleeding, etc. I don't take any now and perhaps there is a better way of forcasting your future.

Without more information the hot water/packs treatment was the most efficient for me. Give yourself a break as much as you can during these times. With so many women working we forget how fragile we are and don't take care of ourselves as well as we might.

Good luck!

Hi A.,

I never physically gave birth to my kids, never had breastmilk, and my breasts get very sore before my period. It has gotten more noticeable with age- I am 40. Do not worry- for some women this is a normal PMS symptom. What has helped me is accupuncture- my accupuncturist will also use accupressure or tuning forks instead of needles. The needles are so tiny that they don't hurt except right around my period when I am extra sensitive. I also take a Natural Calm, a magnesium supplement. Try wearing a camisole tank top with a built in shelf bra for the days you can't stand a regular bra. Not as much support but at least it is more comfortable.

Hi A.,

I have a friend who swears by Evening Primrose. It is available at healthfood stores and I think maybe even Trader Joes. Also, she cuts out caffeine about a week before her period each month and she says these two things together have reduced her pain significantly.

all the best.

Cut down on your caffeine intake. It worked for me!

If you drink caffeine, cutting out -- or eliminating it completely -- will also help.
I've also used cool compresses, and I find that wearing a sports bra also helps me. But caffeine is the biggie for me.

WOW, I had to get on here to respond because I have the exact same thing going on! Very tender and painful breasts, can't even roll over on them for the week before my period. This is a recent thing for me. I think it is hormones. I don't know about for you but for me I wonder if is my age - 42. I wonder if it is peri-menopause symptoms or something? Also I had been on some form of hormone based birth control all my life (except when pregnant and nursing) until the last year. So I wonder if that's the reason too. (the fact that my hormones aren't being controlled anymore) Anyway, thanks for posting this, I read the responses you got so far. I am going to try that evening primrose oil. I can't even entertain the thought of eliminating caffeine, so that's not gonna happen! I'd rather live w/ the painful breasts!! lol. Anyway, good luck to you! (and me) feel free to contact me if you want to chat more about this or if you find a great solution... I'd love to hear about it!! :-)Janet

Don't pump.

Are you taking meds? Even if you are, you can atill take EPO (Evening Primrose Oil) 1 in the am and 1 at night and see...that usually does the trick.

If you are taking and meds and want to try something natural instead, there are options....lots of them. Contact me off-list and I will share! Most of the time a thyroid issue is not a primary issue, rather a secondardy issue to hypothalamus/pituitary and or/adrenal issues.

The milk thing sounds suspicious. I can see 6-12 months after the baby, but what you are experiencing is a cyclical hormone issue.

Whatever you do, your body is telling you there is an issue....don't ignore it's small signs.
