Does anybody have any suggestions about a more natural approach to relieve PMS and all the good stuff that goes along with our cycle? I get SO moody and irritable, I can't stand myself or anyone else, I don't sleep for days before I start, my cravings are unreal and then once I do finally start I am still crabby w/cravings on top of the horrible cramps and the wonderful acne breakouts. I do take midol but I would like something a little less medicine like and a little more health, hormone and body friendly. I appreciate your help!

Dear Amanda W,

You may not like the answer, but here it is--1) Maintain a consistent exercise routine, 2) Do not use caffiene or sugar and 3) Take a soy supplement.

I haven't read the responses, but one thing that works great for me is to eat red meat just before or in the very first days of my period. The extra iron in my system really helps with my mood and some of the physical side effects. I usually go all out and enjoy a sirloin steak at some place like Saltgrass, especially if nothing looks good at the grocery store that week.

I would recommend going to see Dr Carolyn Marocco in Southlake. She is a naturopathic doctor and is awesome. She is so caring and goes above and beyond for my whole family. You may be having some issues with your hormones and adrenals and she can help you get it all straightened out. One thing I had tried before going to see her was the natural progesterone creams but she said these are not good because if you start using the cream, your body stops producing things it's supposed to since the cream is doing it for you. Same thing happens from birth control pills...which I had been on for years prior. So I have a lot of years of synthetic hormones that has to be cleared out. I think I'm rambling here...but I do think Dr. Marocco can help!

Lots of great advice, but missing one more option: Acupunture. I went to Dr. Steve Homoky at Coit & Spring Creek after breast cancer treatments ended, and I went from being a hormonal "B" (going in and out of menopause from the chemo, etc) to a normal human. Ask him about his Body Restoration Technique. It's been a lifesaver (literally!) for me, since my cancer was caused by being excessively sensitive to Estrogen and Progesterone. His number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

I have a friend who swears that her calcium supplement helps her moodiness due to her cycle. I am not sure about your other symptoms. I have heard that caffeine can really make the cramping worse so if you drink things with caffeine in them you might trying to go decaff. I have also heard to eat a lot of fruits and vegies (healthy anyway) and drink water to help cleanse your system. Not sure if any of this will help.

TCOYF is a great suggestion for learning how to chart your cycles and head off symptoms before they start. Cal/Mag suppliments are good and will help you sleep as well as Red Raspberry. Youcan take it as tea or in capsules. I am not a big fan of the flavor bc its made f the leaves and not the fruit. It helps with cramps. You also might try adding Valerian root, but start out with small dosages and bi=uild up as it might make you sleepy at first. It makes me dream weird after about a week, but I only really take it for the week before my period anyway.

Amanda there is alot to recommend but not enough information about what you have going on. Each supplement is for a certain thing ie calcium is for abdominal cramps, chooolate craving is magnesium, back pain could be zinc or B6. I do suggest getting off of refined sugars, caffeine (all kinds) and alcohol during cycle. Depending on your food and drink choices you might need a detox. Those are a few places where I start with my patients. I would also suggest getting under care of a wholistic doc who knows what to recommend and dosages, as labels are not always exact we are all individuals with different needs. Hope this helps and if you have any questions my office number is ###-###-####.

Lots of good advice so far, esp. eliminating the caffeine, which is a big offender.
For many years, I took the herbs dong quai and black cohosh for "female issues". They are the most commonly recommended herbs in Europe to take for menstrual issues. Google these and read about their effects. I agree completely that nutrition is the way to go. One of our daughters had terrible PMS & cramps in her teen years. She drank a lot of Pepsi & ate a lot of chocolate. Once she scaled back on these, it definitely improved her monthly problems.
You can take command of your own body & it will get better. Good luck!

In case you haven't heard of adaptogens, they are a category of herbs that help the body deal with stress, restore balance, and support normal metabolic processes. (A lot has been discussed recently about adaptogens, even Oz on Oprah). Often times stress causes us to overeat as well as produce excess cortisol (causes the body to store fat). Adaptogens support weight management by regulating blood sugar, insulin metabolism, and cortisol levels; aid in digestion; and increase energy. In fact, adaptogens have the ability to shift the body's metabolism to a greater use of fat for energy. Adaptogens help with my mood swings and regulating my hormones during that time of month.

To learn more about fast acting adaptogen sprays (Slim is wonderful for cravings and weight control) and watch "The Story of Adaptogens Documentary" 10 minute video, go to VitalHealth.TunguskaMist.com

My husband and I have been using adaptogens for a long time, and are passionate about helping others find natural alternatives to restore balance in the body:)

I, too, suffer terribly before my period each month. I have had to stop birth control pills which makes it worse for me and take a perscription drug for a few days each month because my moods affect my family life. I tried everything else first including exercise, no caffine or alcohol, etc. This is what works for me. I am much happier now. So, what I'm trying to say is do what works for you, but always ask your doctor before starting any medicine or suppliment. I tried a suppliment once a few years back and started having terrible abdominal pains. After about 2 weeks, I realized the only thing I had done differently was the suppliments and I stopped them immediately. I was better within a few days. Be careful and always check with your doctor first. Good luck!!

I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor. I sell supplements. You have gotten some good suggestions. GLA can help balance your hormones and I just read (not a study, just an individual account) that someone taking Vivix cured their PMS. If I were you I would start with a good supplemental program. I have learned that many people don't need just one supplement for their one issue. What most people need is good nutrition. We can try to do a good job through our food, but that's not enough, and you need to add in good vitamins (and it does depend on the brand). Exercise is always at the top of the list too. You are welcome to contact me if you like.

YOu sound like me when I was in high school! I am so sorry. These are the things my dr. had me do and all of them have helped over the years. I am now 42.
Midol is for teens. Throw that stuff in the trash. If you are able take either Aleeve or Motrin. My dr. prescribed it to me and she told me to take 2 at onset of my period and then 1- 2 hours later, then follow regular dosing instructions. Motrin, I take 4 at onset and 1 or 2 a couple of hours later.

IN the week before you start, try increasing your milk intake. I found that when I stopped drinking milk with dinner (changed to water) my PMS went through the roof. If chocolate is one of your cravings, buy some nesquick or syrup and put it in the milk. For me that kills two birds with one stone. I crave creamy things and this does it for me.

Whole foods has a organic Vitamin E. I took the highest dosage I could afford.

Some have suggested Soy. I am allergic, so that is not an option for me.

Consistent Exercise will also help with the PMS. You will still have symptoms, but they should be more bareable.

I would talk with your dr. about this. I am unable to have kids, but all my friends say their cycles lightened up after the birth of their kids.

I hope these suggestions help, but please talk to your dr. first.

Take Care,

P.

Go into Mike's Health store in McKinney or another place that sells natural herbs and vitamins and ask them what they recommend. They are usually knowledgeable people that answer this question many times over. I'm glad to hear you don't want to medicate all the time! Oh, and make sure you're drinking enough water- that can really help a lot. thewatercure.com is a good source but basically you want to drink pure, filtered water (sold out of the Culligan machine at Wal-Mart for 25 cents a gallon (how cheap!). You want to drink minimum- half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 140, you need at least 70 ounces of water each day.

I've read that eliminating caffeine, salt, and simple sugar the week before/during your period can reduce PMS. (If I remember correctly, my source for this is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility.") Now, I've always ignored this practical advice and just coped, because caffeine, salt, and chocolate are precisely the things that I crave during my period. Obviously, my body doesn't know what's good for it. :)
