Natural PMS Relief

Does anybody have any suggestions about a more natural approach to relieve PMS and all the good stuff that goes along with our cycle? I get SO moody and irritable, I can't stand myself or anyone else, I don't sleep for days before I start, my cravings are unreal and then once I do finally start I am still crabby w/cravings on top of the horrible cramps and the wonderful acne breakouts. I do take midol but I would like something a little less medicine like and a little more health, hormone and body friendly. I appreciate your help!

You may not like the answer, but here it is--1) Maintain a consistent exercise routine, 2) Do not use caffiene or sugar and 3) Take a soy supplement.

I haven't read the responses, but one thing that works great for me is to eat red meat just before or in the very first days of my period. The extra iron in my system really helps with my mood and some of the physical side effects. I usually go all out and enjoy a sirloin steak at some place like Saltgrass, especially if nothing looks good at the grocery store that week.

I use "Soysential" nutritional product that helping me with my PMS. I love it and I am happy to be free of PMS. I be happy to shire more about that product. Good luck-W.

I would recommend going to see Dr Carolyn Marocco in Southlake. She is a naturopathic doctor and is awesome. She is so caring and goes above and beyond for my whole family. You may be having some issues with your hormones and adrenals and she can help you get it all straightened out. One thing I had tried before going to see her was the natural progesterone creams but she said these are not good because if you start using the cream, your body stops producing things it's supposed to since the cream is doing it for you. Same thing happens from birth control pills...which I had been on for years prior. So I have a lot of years of synthetic hormones that has to be cleared out. I think I'm rambling here...but I do think Dr. Marocco can help!

TCOYF is a great suggestion for learning how to chart your cycles and head off symptoms before they start. Cal/Mag suppliments are good and will help you sleep as well as Red Raspberry. Youcan take it as tea or in capsules. I am not a big fan of the flavor bc its made f the leaves and not the fruit. It helps with cramps. You also might try adding Valerian root, but start out with small dosages and bi=uild up as it might make you sleepy at first. It makes me dream weird after about a week, but I only really take it for the week before my period anyway.

Amanda there is alot to recommend but not enough information about what you have going on. Each supplement is for a certain thing ie calcium is for abdominal cramps, chooolate craving is magnesium, back pain could be zinc or B6. I do suggest getting off of refined sugars, caffeine (all kinds) and alcohol during cycle. Depending on your food and drink choices you might need a detox. Those are a few places where I start with my patients. I would also suggest getting under care of a wholistic doc who knows what to recommend and dosages, as labels are not always exact we are all individuals with different needs. Hope this helps and if you have any questions my office number is ###-###-####.

I have a friend who swears that her calcium supplement helps her moodiness due to her cycle. I am not sure about your other symptoms. I have heard that caffeine can really make the cramping worse so if you drink things with caffeine in them you might trying to go decaff. I have also heard to eat a lot of fruits and vegies (healthy anyway) and drink water to help cleanse your system. Not sure if any of this will help.

Lots of great advice, but missing one more option: Acupunture. I went to Dr. Steve Homoky at Coit & Spring Creek after breast cancer treatments ended, and I went from being a hormonal "B" (going in and out of menopause from the chemo, etc) to a normal human. Ask him about his Body Restoration Technique. It's been a lifesaver (literally!) for me, since my cancer was caused by being excessively sensitive to Estrogen and Progesterone. His number is ###-###-####. Good luck!

Lots of good advice so far, esp. eliminating the caffeine, which is a big offender.
For many years, I took the herbs dong quai and black cohosh for "female issues". They are the most commonly recommended herbs in Europe to take for menstrual issues. Google these and read about their effects. I agree completely that nutrition is the way to go. One of our daughters had terrible PMS & cramps in her teen years. She drank a lot of Pepsi & ate a lot of chocolate. Once she scaled back on these, it definitely improved her monthly problems.
You can take command of your own body & it will get better. Good luck!
