My Two Year Old Won't Stop Coughing!

From someone who had a child with chronic sinus problems, it sounds like a sinus infection that won't go away. You don't have to have a cold or runny nose or things that you think you need to see before having an infection. It can literally come out of no where. My son never would have a cold, runny nose, etc. He would start in with this cough and it would only get worse and worse and that's how we always knew he had one. Just take him to the doc. Goodluck

My son used to have the same problem, and would cough so much at night he would some times throw up, he was diagnosed with allergy induced asthma. He is almost 11 and we (his doc and I) think he is starting to grow out of it. He only has to take one medicine now.

My daughter had a similar problem when she was 2. She would only cough bad at night. It was a sinus infection, and it only really bothered her at night because she was laying down and it was draining in her throat.
I would go to the dr right away.

My 2-YO daughter had the same problem. It would seem like it was getting better... then the cough would worsen again with no other symptoms. She ended up having a sinus infection... after the 2nd dose of antibiotics, it got better. CAll the Dr. today & tell them she's been coughing that long... they'll get you in ASAP.

why have you waited for months to even address the problem??
i would take her to the dr or hospital immediately.

Does she sound like she's gasping and its a dry raspy cough..kind of harsh? or is it like a regular hard dry cough..or even wet? Because colds can last to several months, when to worry is if she's gasping for air, stops breathing or starts running a fever. There are several things it could be, from a regular seasonal cold to allergies, to bronchitis, to asthma to the whooping cough. The best thing is talk it over with her pediatrician.

Well, yeah, you probably should've taken her to the dr. before now.

BUT, what sort of cough is it? Is it a dry, hacky cough? Or is it a barky cough, sort of sounding like a seal? It could be croup, or it could be whooping cough. There have been lots of reported cases of whooping cough going around.

Does she have any other symptoms at all? Is her nose stopped up? Are her ears plugged up?

With our 5 year old, recently she had a bad cough, and the dr.'s said they didn't like giving cough syrup any more because if the cough was being productive and getting mucous out of the lungs, then the kids got better faster.

Also with our 5 year old, she gets asthma-like symptoms sometimes when she's sick. We have a nebulizer and can just about recognize when she needs it anymore.

Regardless, only the doctor can really tell you what it is your child is sick with, whether it's whooping cough, croup, an ear infection or sinus infection, whatever, and help prescribe something for it.

Wait until tomorrow. My son has had the same issue and when we went to the doctor he prescribed medicine to help with the cough. He seems to get this every year and I was told it had something to do with allergy's.

I would take her now. My daughter went through the same thing w/ whooping cough and it's scary!
When you take her to the ER. have them check for whooping cough. It is going around. My daughter, husband, and myself are recovering from it. All of us were vaccinated too. Good luck.

Hi, J.! Don't laugh when I tell you this, but I'm telling you, it works... put Vick's vapor rub on her feet and put some socks on her when she goes to bed. It has worked every time for us! I know several other moms who do it, and it works for them too. I don't know why or how, all I know is that it works! But yes, I would definitely make an appointment and take your daughter in. Take her to see a Dr. soon, it could be whooping cough. Here in our county they have had 15 varified cases of it.

I suggest taking her into an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor or an Allergist. She may need her tonsils and adenoids out. If this has been going on for months, without the signs of cold or flu symptoms, then it's probably not bronchitis or pnemonia. It could be due to an allergy, and her throat is swelling. Try an over-the-counter anti-histamine such as Zyrtec, Benedryl or generics with the same active ingredients. Some of those meds also have an added decongestant that will help loosen any phlegm in the throat. You can ask a pharmacist about those. Generally, a 2 year old takes 1/2 tsp.

If you feel your daughter can't breathe, then "yes", take her into the ER. If it's an allergic reaction, they can give her a shot with antihistamines to make the meds work more quickly. If it's an upper respiratory issue, they may put her on breathing treatments and oxygen to enable respiration.

Unless your daughter is turning blue or has a fever with the cough, you can wait until morning to call your doctor. I know how frustrating this can be. You feel so helpless as a mom when your kids are sick. But that is also too long to have a cough. She could have an infection or asthma? But I'm no doctor ;-) I hope she feels better soon!

check for feathers....maybe a pillow, etc. ...same thing happened to my 3 yr old and that's what it was.

One of the things that is supposed to help a cough is bananas. Might try a bedtime snack of banana and see if it helps. I'd be interested to know. I've not had a cough or kids with one to try it and see.
