Treatment of Child with Disabilities at School

Background on my daughter. She has been diagnosed with ADHD, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) , Generalized Anxiety, Tic syndrome & Sensory Issues. I've been battling with the school for a few years now on getting an IEP or 504 put in place. I'm setting up another meeting & I refuse to leave the school until one is put in place. My daughters grades are dropping in one particular subject b/c her teacher absolutley refuses to make ANY special accomidations. My main question is they are currently punishing her by taking away her...

Therapist, Counselor, or Psychologist?

For a long time now I have felt like "talking with someone" would help me deal with some of my issues and tendencies in my life. I tend to overreact to negative things, I have a bad temper, and worst of all, I fixate on the past and stress about the future - even the distant future, like 20-30 years from now, what will this or that aspect of my life be like - instead of enjoying the present. I really want to try to "work on" these things so I've decided that it's time to go ahead and DO IT. My question is what kind of provider would be...

Attitude and Self-injury

I have a 12-year-old boy whose academic performance has slowly deteriorated throughout this academic year and whose personal integrity has surfaced to insecurity. He is quite unorganized. He has a school agenda that is full of doodles rather than homework assignments. My son is not an excellent student, although I am told he could be if only he had the "right attitude", but up to now he has been passing with reasonable marks. However, this past term he has failed 4 classes. This past week at school his counselor informed me he put paint in...

What to Do About Depression???

Hi, My husband has always been moody. I just took it to be in his nature. Now that we have kids, however, he gets into these "moods" much more often, sometimes twice a week, if they only last a day or so. Sometimes they last a whole week and more! And I HATE it! I don't know what to do. He is not abusive, though sometimes can be mean. He tends to just be quiet and not say anything. I have to take care of the kids myself, as he does not want to be involved when he's in a mood. It's to the point where my soon to be three-year-old...

Dyslexia & Dysgraphia

My soon to be 8 year old (March 20) daughter has always written things backwards. She used to write her name in mirror image all of the time. So not only were the letters backwards they were written from right to left. In kindergarten I asked her teacher about it, and the teacher said it was still quite common at that age. In first grade I asked the teacher about it, and she said that since my daughter was not failing that the school would do no testing on her. Finally, I found out I could pay for testing through the Child Studies...

My Husband Is More Moody than I Am

i just recently found out that i am pregnant with our third child. it wasn't planned, but i am still very excited. and ever since we found out that we were gonna have our third, my husband has been very moody. i thought us women were supposed to be the moody ones when we're pregnant. i swear he's using the pregnancy for an excuse and he's trying to turn it back on me and saying that i'm the one with the mood swings. am i the only one who has gone through this, and is there something i can do to better his childish behavior?

Attempted Suicide -- What Now?

Hey ladies, A good friend of mine tried to take his life yesterday and is now in the hospital under suicide watch. I'm going to go visit him this evening, but I have no idea what to say or what to bring. He's been depressed for most of the 15 years I've known him, so this isn't a total shocker, but it's still very upsetting. I want to help, but I've never been in that dark of a place before, so I don't really know how to help him. Do any of you have advice on what kinds of things are helpful to hear? Should I bring him something to the...
