My 3Yo Keeps Wetting... Spastic Bladder?

This problem started last summer. My little person had been potty trained for about 5-6 months before it started, barely ever had an accident and never had one at night. Then last summer she started going in her pants, not a full accident, just enough to make her pants wet (and make her realize that she had to go). We took her to the pediatrician then, just to make sure she didn't have a UTI or something since she hadn't had accidents before that. The doctor said that she was fine and that maybe it was happening because of the loss of structure during the summer "camp" as opposed to the structured pre-school. I agreed with this since my daughter thrives in a structured environment. I also felt (and still somewhat feel) that it could partly be that she doesn’t want to stop playing to go.

Well, she is still doing it and it is getting worse. She has these mini-accidents pretty much everyday now. And she is having accidents at night, about twice a week now. We took her back to the pediatrician, who said that she doesn't see anything physically wrong with her. She said that if it continues to get worse, we should take our daughter to a pediatric urologist and that it might be a spastic bladder. I googled this and couldn't find any info about this occurring in children. AND the information I did find about it occurring in women did not look comforting.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue with their child or if anyone can lead me to more information about the spastic bladder in children. If you child had the same issue, what did you do?

I should probably tell you also that I had issues with this kind of thing when I was a kid. My parents were not "take you kid to the doctor" people unless we were bleeding and it was an emergency so I was never diagnosed. But I didn't grow out of it until my early 20s. It was horrible, and I don't want my daughter to go through the same thing.

Thanks for any help!! :)

What can I do next?

Trying a good family chiropractor is worth a shot if you want to go an alternate method. It is possible that something is off in her spine or neck interfering with the function of her body and it just hasn't come to light until now. If you are in the Charleston, SC area I suggest Atlantic Coast Family Chiropractic on Trolley Rd. The doctor there is Heather Wyant and she specializes in families especially kids and infants.

This does not sound like fun-- and I'm so sorry you had to go through what you did! I would definitely, definitely tell the pediatrician that you suffered from the same issues, and I would also ask the ped to recommend a urologist and make sure the urologist understands your experience and your concerns as well.

You know, a friend of mine was just telling me that she and her sisters had to go the doc when they your young to have a procedure done so they wouldn't have accidents. I beleive the doc had to stretch the bladder or something like that. She said it worked they had no more problems with accidents. I will call her and get more details and write you back. She may just have a small bladder.

I talked to her and she said that both of her sisters had to have a procedure where the doc had to widen the urethra. The way she talked, it was pretty simple. Good Luck!

I would try Chiropractic for your daughter. This could very simply be a nerve interference issue rather than a spastic bladder. It is very common for this type of thing to happen if the spine is not in its correct alignment. This is such a gentle and non invasive way to help her! If you need more information, please let me know. Best of luck!

Children regress for a number of reasons and when they make an upward change, the results aren't just overnight typically speaking. It will take time to relearn behaviors. One of mine wouldn't stop playing to go. Another of mine was potty trained and then started wetting again which lasted until he was 10 during the night! I took him to the doctor and they told me that they found nothing wrong physically so to try a placebo effect which worked. His nighttime urination stopped until he figured out it was merely a vitamin he was taking. I will tell you that Pull-Ups and whatnot do NOT help with the situation. Even the whole technology of keeping wetness close just doesn't cut it. Keeping nothing on or using a fabric like a hemp works so much better!

I would suggest you get her off all caffein. Remember chocolate contains caffein. Allergy can also irritate the bladder. Start out eliminating the caffein and any foods you know she began eating or drinking within a month or so of this problem developing. V. Ellis

Well, it's been more then a few months and if it were me I'd just take my child to the ped urologist rather then guess anymore. Besides if it's something that can be treated easily and you keep going months waiting it would be such a waste of time and self confidence hit for nothing but waiting and guessing. Our peds know alot but sometimes it's better to move on and get another opinion you owe it to yourself and your child after this much time to end the mystery of the cause and get some kind of treatment. best wishes

That happened with my son. He was potty trained for about a year. At around ghe age of 4 he started wetting again day and night. He is over 5 now and still wets every night and has accidents several days. I am tired!!!!! I took him to the dr who sent him to get a Pediatric Ultrasound on his bladder, kidneys, ducts, etc. So far, they haven't found anything wrong. I guess they'll just grow out of it. I do believe they just get busy playing and doing things that they don't want to stop to go the the bathroom. My Pediatrician says to make it extremely inconvenient for him when he wets. Instead of having everything handy to change him the minute he wets, make him take another trip upstairs to his drawers to get clean clothes. Another trip to a different place to get a wipe to wipe off. Then, another trip to throw the dirty clothes in the washroom. She said he'll eventually get so tired of going through this long process, that he'll realize it's easier to just get up and go to the bathroom. So, we'll see...

Good luck!
