When my sister and I started school (we stayed home until kindergarten), for about 2 years we came down with everything - and then it settled down to getting sick a few times per year.
When our son started day care at 3 months - for about 2 years he came down with everything - and then it settled down to getting sick a few times per year.
Things improved even more once we'd had our tonsils/adenoids out.
My personal theory is that it takes roughly 2 years of exposure to public germs to train up an immune system.

What is your child's temperature? How high? Temperatures can vary, and a slightly elevated temperature doesn't always mean a fever. How are you taking his temperature, and when? Does he act fussy or sick? Are you just taking his temperature out of caution, or because he seems sick?

Please provide some more details.

Need more details. Did your child just start preschool after being at home with you? How high is the fever? Did you take him to a pediatrician and if so, what did the doctor say?

Welcome to Mamapedia!

It would help if you gave us more info - how old is he, how high is the fever, what other symptoms does he have at the time, how long does it last, does it slow him down a lot or make him cranky? A low fever is the sign of the body fighting off an infection, so it's a good thing. Are you taking his temp all the time and just notice it every 3 months for a short period of time? Or is he really very ill with a high fever that lasts for a long time? Have you discussed this with the pediatrician and have your reported all your concerns? What answers have you gotten? If you can update your question by adding this info, maybe we can help you more.

Kids pick up lots of virus's as their immune systems are developing, and fevers are how the body's immune system fights virus's. I remember reading a study years ago that said the more fevers a child has in the first few years of life the better. The stronger their immune system will be and the healthier they will be as adults. They are even at less risk for cancer as adults. If you are concerned though, take your child to the doctor.

First, we need more details: how high is the fever; are there any other symptoms like rashes, diarrhea, sore throat, achiness?

I vote his immune system is just revved up and fighting off a bug he caught somewhere....every 2-3 months for a 3 year old sounds about average exposure rate to new bugs.

have them check for a UTI, wish I had had them do that years earlier, my daughter had kidney reflux and that was the only symptom but the doctors just put it off as a random illness each time, but it was like clockwork...

Well we can't diagnose a child on here or answer your question, I'm sorry. But at that age, if they are in daycare or pre-school, and gets sick every few months, that's fairly typical. There are things you can do to help (proper sleep, nutrition, washing hands, etc.) but kids around other kids tend to pick up viruses, etc.

So long as he just gets fever and not always sick, it's actually a sign that his/her body is fighting it off. But if your child is ill or takes a long time to recover, etc. make sure you take him/her in to pediatrician.

Good luck :)

Kids get fevers. Why? Who does he come in contact with? What are his other symptoms? Does he go to any sort of group activities? Such as church? Child care? Head Start? Family activities?

Kids grow their immune system and running a fever is one of those things that can happen while they're fighting off illnesses.

Look up "cyclic fever". Track on a calendar when it starts, how high it gets and how long it lasts. Not saying this is what he has, but it helps make you feel less crazy if this is what is going on.
I had this issue with my first child. A fever every 6 weeks. Would take him in every time, only to get "fever of unknown origin" diagnosis. No other symptoms. i eventually just kept him home and monitored him. It started when he was 11 months old and stopped when he turned 8. All kinds of tests were run on him. Had his immune system tested, MRI, EEG, cat scan and everything. Always normal. My concern was that he had 4 febrile seizures between the ages of 1 and 2 1/2, and then those went away too. It was just weird and very frustrating. I would plan vacations around his fevers as i knew when it would resurface.
My son is 12 now, healthy and hardly ever gets sick.
