hey everyone,
my dh is in the army and we are being moved to ft. leonard wood (we're in colorado springs right now but we're leaving in 2 days). on post housing is not an option so we're looking to rent someplace in waynesville or st. robert. we've got one son (2) and a dog (20 lbs) and we've been to st. robert before but we lived on base then so we didn't get to know the area as much as we would have liked. any suggestions of locations to look that would be a good community for my little boy but also not too terribly far from base for my dh? thanks for all suggestions!

What can I do next?

Look at Crocker MO too. Smaller town but more space. My best friend grew up there and her mom still lives there. My son just finished basic and AIT there. Good luck.

I am sorry that I dont have any good suggestions for you...my husband is retired after 30 years in the Army but he was never stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood. I am sure there are some resources that could be helpful to you on post...maybe the housing office would have some brochures or something to get you headed in the right direction. My husband has an old HS friend who works at Ft. Leonard Wood, as a civilian...I will ask him to get in contact with her and see if she has any suggestions.
Please tell your husband Thank You for serving!!! And Thank YOU for holding down one of the toughest jobs in the country....Military Wife!!!!
Happy New Year!!!

Good morning! We were at FLW about 3 years ago. We rented a duplex just down Y Hwy, about 5 min. from the front gate. We rented through Re-Max, the POC was Doliena; very nice lady. The area we lived in was just starting to be developed and from what I understand is now quite developed. We lived on Hollow Oak Lane in St. Robert, 3 BR, 2.5 bathrooms, 1 car garage. Should be plenty of room for you guys. I do know you can check out AHRN.com and some of the duplexes in that development are listed on that website. We did/do have a 80 pound Lab and a small cat and it was no problem while we were there. We did not have kids when we got there, but our daughter was born while we were there. I think the area would be fine for little ones. Probably mostly military families there and off the main road enough not to have to worry about that.

If I can help any more, let me know. Enjoy FLW!!!

Hey J.,
We live in Jeff City , Mo... about an hour/and half out of your new area...but having no responses yet this morning I thought I would do some research in the area for you. I do some freelance work for a local realtor here, and my dad was a realtor forever... , so even though you are interested in just renting for obvious reasons :o), this is a great place to check into. Realtors usually have the "inside scoop" when it comes to housing. Alot of them even have little homes and such that they themselves rent out or even know of others who do as well. Seems to be a better option than the usual "rental mills" ...ha ha, like a puppy mill type landlord in my opinion...Especially for a family. So in example, when I was just 19 and I got my first job as a retail-manager out of our city, my dad and I went together and hooked up with another realtor in that city and we were able to find a great little apartment in an older "home" that was just perfect for my needs $$/safety, etc... and we didn't owe them anything... THat is their job. Not sure how that works in this day and age, but the cool thing, is THEY will KNOW the area. Wouldn't hurt to call and do some sort of area check yourself with those folks and get a sense for the market for rentals etc and preschools, churches, area shopping ....
Re/Max is whom my late-Dad worked with , which is still the largest, thus which is why it came up first... I would contact the local office there in St. Robert and ask to speak with their top three Agents and interview them for the right fit for both personalities. OR just deal with the owner(s). You'll have to copy and Paste the links sorry...

Don't be afraid to contact folks to rent their home even though they were "hoping" to "sell it" ... Especially in THIS market.

Best of Luck! Ft. Leo. has a neat "campus" ? if that is what you would call it. Clean. Can't believe they don't have housing available though...bummer. Nice community.

PS.... I too wanted to say THANK YOU to your husband for serving, and to you as well for indeed serving in what HAS to be an even harder job, a military wife and MOM!Thank God for computers and cell phones! God bless you all! Our country couldn't BE without folks like you all.

We just left FLW less than 2 years ago. We loved our neighborhood and neighbors! We lived in a subdivision off of Hwy Y in St. Robert (can't remember the name right now, but it is on Lemming Lane, a left turn off of Hwy Y about 2 miles past the intersection by the Cracker Barrel traveling away from post). The upper part of the subdivision has a lot of custom builds and foreign service members. The lower part is newer homes with several dogs for yours to play with, but a very steep road to get in and out, so it's not so good for motorcycles or getting out when it snows. There are a lot of other subdivisions off of Hwy Y, all of which are a quick, direct drive to post via the main gate and easy access to the interstate. Mary Sue Miller is a great agent with Miller Realty. We did not use her because we went through USAA's preferred agent program, but her family has been around for a while & she knows a lot about builders and what not. Having a 2 year old myself, I would recommend finding a place with safe, quiet streets (in a subdivision or on a cul-de-sac), and a good, flat yard. We both know FLW can be pretty boring, but having a safe outdoor area for your son and dog to play on can make a huge difference. Best of luck in your search!

J. S.,

Originally when I moved to the area almost 12 years ago, we had considered Ft. Leonard Wood; however, my husband at that time was considering getting into the Army but never did join. I'm not sure how far away from THE BASE you consider too far; however, we had considered the town of LEBANON, MO. It is about 30 miles from FLW and has the small town feel, and a great area to raise a family.

Moreover, I ended up living in Lebanon, MO for about 4 years before moving to Springfield, MO.

Like I said before, we weren't in the military; however, we selected the Lebanon, MO area because it was close enough to THE BASE to commute to/from where you live on the base and want to travel to Lebanon, or live in Lebanon and want to commute to the FLW.

Just another option,
-A

Are you looking for somewhere just to rent or is buying an option for you? We have a great house for sale 15 minutes from post. Its a great place for your son and dog to run and play. 3 bed, 2 bath with 10 acres. We are very motivated sellers and willing to negotiate. Our MLS# is 107956. Buying is much cheaper than renting in the area. If you are insistent on renting, look into Oak Point Townhomes. ###-###-#### They are great and accept pets. The girls that work in the office are super nice and the apartments are very well taken care. Its the only place in town with a pool. Its hard to find decent apartments to rent in the area.
