Moving to Fort Smith Area

I recently received a dream job offer for the Fort Smith area. My husband and I have two young children, 4 and 10 months. I am looking for any and all information on the area, housing options/best locations, schools - public and private, resources for a soon to be stay at home dad and an active baby.

We will be moving in August. We will have two house-hunting trips before we move. We are interested in getting a larger house with at least 5 to 10 acres.

We probably will register our son, 4, in Montessori.

We are moving from Washington, DC.

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their responses and private messages offering advice and insight. We just spent 5 days in Fort Smith and found a perfect house for our family in Lavaca. In pristine condition, with a pool and two acres of land, it is the perfect house for us.

We also visited Fort Smith Montessori and confirmed that it is the right school for our son.

It was a whirlwind tour, but I am sure that we have made the right decision. We now have a lovely house, a new school for Jack and can offer a heartfelt referral for our realtor who toted us hither and yon as we looked for our perfect house.

Peace

N.

hello there!

My name is D., my mother actually sent the link to me for your questions. I currently live in Fort Smith with my husband. First of all prepare for heat, August is our hottest month. Just around the corner though, is the fall which is always beautiful. If you are looking of land with some acreage I suggest you try looking in Alma or Van Buren. Im not sure if there is anything with land actually in the city of Fort Smith. Van Buren is just north of us and is a nice smaller city but is growing, as is alma. Another option would be Roland Oklahoma. We are right on the boarder and Roland is just about 10 miniutes from Fort Smith, to the east. Roland is a good community and has some nice developments and nice houses. Alot of wich are newer. As far as montesorri schools, I know of one and its in Fort Smith. Im sure there are a few in the area but I have not checked. If you have any questions or need anyone to do some foot work for you, I would be glad to help.

blessings to you and yours
and good luck with the search!

Hi N.! I think Fort Smith is a great place to raise a family. I grew up here, taught school in Dallas for 10 years and moved back as soon as I had my first child. There are lots of good schools here both public and private. My two youngest children go to Hobson Preschool where the three year old will be in the Spanish Immersion class in the Fall. As a teacher, I am very pleased with what they offer academically. My oldest child attends IC Catholic School. We are not Catholic, but I am impressed with their program. As for house hunting trips, I would suggest checking out forsalebyowner.com and realtor.com before you come. It is good to do your homework ahead of time to let the realtor know your interests. That will keep you from wasting time and make sure that you don't miss something that would interest you. Compared to D.C., you will get a lot more house for the money. However, if you want acreage, you will likely have to move somewhere outside of town. Some of the surrounding communities that may have acreage include Van Buren, Barling, Greenwood and Alma. Good luck with your move.

Welcome N.! I'm from Calif. moved here 4 yrs. ago. Now it is really raining so what is on my mind to say is make sure you are in a no flood area when looking for housing. The 4 seasons are great for me but the summer humidity is awful! People are very open and friendly.
I'm thinking maybe Riley Farms would be a nice area or I personally like the Alma area. I worked at St. Edwards hospital as a contracted tech. and know they have a nice, clean pre-school that is open to the public.Enjoy the "natural state" as they call it here in Arkansas.

Hey N.,

I am a native of Ft. Smith and love the area. It will be difficult to find a place inside the city limits with that much acreage. You will probably have to look in the surrounding areas. The Greenwood/Rye Hill area is nice and has a good school system. Good Luck and God Bless your husband.

There is a great new housing area in Fort Smith/Greenwood boundary. Riley farms and I"m sure you can look it up on the internet. You might ck out villiageprofile.com it gives you the rundown on several housing addtns. Not familiar with the private school system, we have a 3 1/2 yr old who goes to Tendercare located in Sparks and we really like it. Alma Ar is also a nice area with good schools. Best of luck to you in your search.
