Okay, best recommendation for mom and daughter movie night that would be appropriate for a 12 year old and not deadly boring for her old mom. Go!
By the way - could be in a theater or on DVD, classic or recent - doesn't matter.
Eta - I haven't seen any of the recent ones recommended so far, but she's seen all of them. Gone with the wind is one of my favorites, and we watched the first half hour together, but that might be a little long for her. But she's reading little women right now - and somewhere I have it on DVD - that might be perfect! I was also thinking Rear Window - she loves mysteries - but not sure where to find it.

Nim's Island is terrific, very girl-power without hitting you over the head with "message," and very entertaining for both adults and kids her age. Look it up online. Not enough folks saw it when it was out but we all enjoy it (dad too!).
A Room With a View. It's a Merchant-Ivory film, and stars Helena Bonham-Carter and Daniel Day-Lewis, back before they were famous.
My girls and I recently watched Pride and Prejudice, and that was wonderful, too.
(As you might be able to tell, we also love Downton Abbey, and have the first several seasons on DVD, and will watch those in a marathon sometimes!)

My girls and I just watched "Hairspray" (the John Travolta version) and they became obsessed and we've now watched it several (and by several I mean like 20) times.
They are 7 and 4 but I think a 12 year old would like it. YOu have to like Musicals though, there's lots of singing.

My daughter and I love going to comic book movies together, and there are several out right now.
We both loved the latest Spiderman and are going to Godzilla this weekend.

Hitchcock would definitely be great--either Rear Window or North by Northwest. Or if we're going for classics, how about some of the Katherine Hepburn films, with or without Bogie, such as the Philadelphia Story? You probably can find them at the public library or at a university/college library, or Netflix will have them.

Parental Guidance is funny and cute, Bedtime Stories is a favorite of ours and any Disney movie. One that my 11 year old thinks is hilarious is Master of Disguise.
Sometimes we will just search Netflix together and pick one that looks interesting. Then pop some popcorn or gorge ourselves on ice cream. Nothing brings girls closer together than some junk food, a movie and time with butts next to eachother on a couch. We love to snuggle up with a big blanket for the whole time as well.

I could go on all day. One of our favorite things to do is snuggle up for a movie. We feel so lucky to be able to watch virtually any movie at any time. Amazing how times have changed, have fun!
When I was 5-7 an not feeling well my mom and I would watch classic musicals like Carousel. When I was ten my first scary movie was Ghost aside from Jurassic Park. If she loves musicals, try Grease, when I loves that mom got me Saturday night Fever. More recently the Legally Blondes should be ok. Cheaper by the Dozen 1&2 will be good for some laughs. If she likes Steve Martin, Father of the Bride 1&2 are hilarious. The Last Song might be good, it's a bit sad in pieces but no sex scenes like in The Notebook also written by Nicholas Sparks. He also wrote the Lucky One.
There is also Mermaids with Cher which has some innuendos, but it very good. The new Hairspray, if she fell inlove with John Travolta in Grease. A League of Their Own is great. Raising Helen, Aiden from Sex In The City, you wont be bored, lol. Thee Princess Diaries 1&2, Now and Then, Girls Just want to Have Fun, How to Deal, Ella Enchanted(if shes still into Princesses), 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight's Tale, Just One of the Guys, My Sisters Keeper, Bring it On Series, Sleepover.When I was twelve my mom let me and my friends watch Animal House(I do not recommend this), my point is, you know her maturity level and what she can handle, so even if its PG-13 he may be able to handle it if she's mature for her age, but I know some mothers who wouldn't let their kids watch PG movies. I hope I helped, my son is two, we mostly watch animated movies with singing and dancing or silly animals.
This might be slightly too old for your daughter, depending on her maturity level (if she's not ready yet, maybe save it for next year?) The Man in the Moon. My daughter would have loved this movie when she was 12. But it does get emotionally intense.
romeo and juliet, either the lovely old zeffirelli or the snazzy 'new' luhrman. she's at a perfect age for the important discussions that will come up.
not to beat the bard to death, but '10 things i hate about you' (a modern interpretation of 'taming of the shrew') is timeless and wonderful.
or how about the breakfast club? schools have changed a lot since it was made, but teenagers haven't.
or go the other way and do 'pride and prejudice' for a discussion about how women's attitudes have evolved.

If you like musicals The Music Man is great! My kids loved the original Parent Trap and the original Love Bug movies. Freaky Friday would be a great mom/daughter movie. I prefer the original. Mary Poppins, Annie, ET, would also be good ones.
