More Bleeding After Lochia Stopped

I already talked to my midwife so I'm not worried, just wondering if this happened to anyone else...
I bled for about 5 1/2 weeks after my baby was born. About 3 weeks later I had been wearing my postpartum belt and I started bleeding again -- not heavily, but definitely more than spotting. I thought and hoped it was just left-over lochia, but it went on for 2 days and stopped as abruptly as it started. Then 3 days later I spotted in the afternoon, stopped, and then spotted more the next afternoon. That was it. There were no cramps and no other indication (besides blood) that I had started menstruating again.
I am breastfeeding full time and on demand just like I did with my first baby... With him I didn't get a period for about 14 months so I'm confused...I know it can be different with every baby, but I certainly didn't think my period would come back this soon. Could this just be more lochia or should I just psych myself up for monthly visits again? :( Did anyone else have this happen?

What can I do next?

With my second child I only bled for 1 1/2 after birth, but like clockwork they came back monthly. With my first child, I bled for 6 weeks and my period didn't come back for about 6 months. It does vary.

Hi there,

I had a similar situation after I delivered my first child and I bled for 17 weeks off and on. The reason was because I had a small piece of placenta still attached to my uterus and it was causing the irregular bleeding. I had to go in to the Dr. office to get an ultrasound to locate the piece and then they did a D & C in the office to dislodge it. Unfortunately, she couldn't get it all so I had to be scheduled for an outpatient procedure to get the rest removed.

I started bleeding maybe a month after and was sure it was my period. It wasn't quite as heavy, but it lasted several days. Didn't have anything after that again until my period really started 10 or so months later.

Hi-
I bled for what felt like forever with both of my kid's. My first one was a c-section and I bled for a good 6 weeks, then it would stop, and then a couple of days later I would be bleeding again for a few days. That went on for a few more weeks. I did go to the Dr. and everything checked out fine. I was told that I was over doing it and that could be causing the bleeding to continue. With my second child, a VBAC, I bled for a month, and then off & on for a couple of weeks. I also got it checked out by my Dr. and everything looked good.
I breastfed both my kid's exclusively on demand and didn't get my period for 13 months with my 1sr child and 11 months with my second.
Hope this helps...

I bled at random for ages after my third child was born. I brought it up at every midwife check up and I was checking out fine. At my 6 weeks I was still lightly bleeding when she checked me out. She did a thourough exam and I had healed fine and everything. What she said was that my body was trying to build up a lining but my hormones were preventing it from really getting anywhere or holding on. I wasn't ovulating but still trying to build up lining. My first 2 are boys, my third is a girl. I wonder if that made any difference. I didn't do this with my first, although I went on the minipill at 6wks and was on it for a while(less than a year but more than 6 months). I didn't get my first period until 6 months. With my second I went on nothing hormonal at all and again didn't get a period until 6 months or so. My third I again didn't go on anything hormonal and I kept spotting/bleeding at random for several months until it went to a more regular once a month. I breastfed all of them on demand and delayed solids until 7 months. My third was a much better sleeper than the other 2 so her demand wasn't nearly as often at night especially so perhaps that did something to suppress my hormones a bit less. She just turned one a little over a week ago and we're still breastdfeeding. Within the last few months my periods have gone back to what they basically were, migraines and all. It took a while before that happened though.

I had something similar. I bled 4 or 5 weeks after the birth and then ~2 weeks after it had stopped I bled for a couple of days. I was also breastfeeding full time on demand. I was afraid it was my period, but it has now been over 6 weeks with no more bleeding, so I think it was just more lochia. This is also a second child for me, and I wonder if it just takes a little longer for the lochia to totally stop since it's much harder to get enough rest :-)

My lochia lasted just about the same- 5 1/2 weeks. But then a couple days later I started bleeding again. This time it seemed like a full-on period, just like I'd always had. I was also breastfeeding on demand and nursing enough times a day that it should have kept it away, but no such luck. At my 6 week checkup a few days later they were asking about the bleeding, and didn't seem to quite believe me when I said I was pretty sure it was a period. But then the next month I had it again, right on schedule like before. So I know it was. My premenstrual symptoms did change after pregnancy, so I didn't really have any warning but the cycle came like clockwork. I breastfed for a long time after that, and always got them, until I got an IUD 7 months later. So, yes, it could be your periods. I am holding out hope that next time I won't get them back immediately. But at least it made it easier to get the IUD put in.

I bled for 8 weeks after giving birth to my son. I think it might still be lochia and not your period. Sometimes it stops and comes back, that's what happened to one of my friends. I only breastfed for 3 months and my period came back shortly after I stopped breastfeeding.

Me too. Bled and then lochia and then all stopped after 6 weeks. And then a few days ago - 3 week later - I noticed that I was spotting. This is my second, I am nursing on demand around the clock, like with my first, but did not experience this with my first. With the first, everything ended at 6 weeks and I never got my period until I stopped exclusively b-feeding at about 18 months. This one, though was a VBAC, so I am wondering if my body is reacting differently. Have not been back for ppartum check - not keen about more poking and prodding - and am silently hoping all is ok. Seems like it might be, judging by your and others experiences....? :)
