Miscarriage? - Racine, WI

I have gotten my period what seems to be twich this month...the first started on 1/5 and lasted a lonnnng 7 days...and then started again on the 21 and is still going strong. I'm guessing it is just because I stopped using the Nuvaring in December and my body is readjusting to no BC...but could I have had a miscarriage?

What can I do next?

I had something very similar happen to me when I went off the Nuvaring several months ago. A long period, and then spotting and another longish period. It is all back to normal now, 3 months later.

i'm no doc but i would say it's your body getting over the hormones you had been on. it's really common to be really thrown off when you stop any birth control. i say it again and again on here but i always suggest the book "taking charge of your fertility" by toni weschler. every woman should read this book...it just really is the easiest way to understand exactly how our cycle works and its great to either prevent or support pregnancy. i don't think it sounds like you miscarried...though i suppose it could be possible. i think you'd feel like it was heavier than most periods though. good luck!

When I went off of my birth control I went from my periods being super far apart to getting two a month. It took my body six months to get regular. I even had to go on a hormone to jump start my cycle back to normal. So, don't worry it is normal and I highly doubt you had a miscarriage. You could call and ask your doctor too about it if you are worried.

I think the episodes are too close together to be a miscarriage. Women are usually fertile 2 weeks after their periods. It would be quite odd to get pregnant and then miscarriage (at least where you would notice) so quickly after a period. I agree with everyone else- it's quite possible that you are just readjusting to being without your BC. Every time I go off my BC I have similar situations. You should call your doc if you're really concerned about it. Usually, nurses are more than willing to talk with you for a minute.

I doubt you had a miscarriage. My cycle was screwed up for a few months after stopping hormonal birth control (the Pill).

Also, depending on when in December you stopped using the Nuvaring, your "period" on 1/5 may not have been a real period, but just the breakthrough bleeding women experience during their "off" week when on hormonal birth control.

If you've had regular periods before taking BC, your body will likely regulate itself in a couple of months. I have had good luck taking Evening Primrose Oil capsules to regulate my period and reduce the symptoms of PMS (cramps, cravings). Do your own research, but you can buy EPO anywhere, like Target or Walgreen's.

I agree with what Laura said. Going off BC messes with your cycle. I have had a miscarriage and I certainly knew what was going on, it was MUCH more than just a long, heavy period. I would guess going off Nuvaring is causing it. I would give it a month or two more and if your cycle doesn't seem to be normal again, call the doc.

I had a similar experice last summer, and my doc told me that it was what the other posts have said - my body adjusting back (in my case from pregnancy - as I was not on a new BC). If you are still concerned, give the nurse at your doctor's office a call. It can't hurt!

no your not having a miscarriage. because you wouldn't of been able to concieve until 1/19 and it takes 3 days for a embryo to be feritlize and to drop into the uterus
