Mirena and Breastfeeding - San Antonio,TX

It didn't affect my milk supply but I really don't like it. Like others have said there are to many side effects. I really like the copper iud, it has no hormones in it and I couldn't even tell that I had it, for me I had no side effects unlike with the mirena. I wish I would have gotten the copper one again.

I wouldn't do it. It still has hormones that won't affect baby but will help your milk supply dry up. I didn't think so until two of my friends and my sister, who I might add all planned on breastfeeding for a yr, all got it and within a few months they were completely dried up. Don't do it!! Get the Paragard IUD instead. It is copper with zero hormones and lasts longer than the Mirena anyway. Good luck. You have a big decision to make. I also might add that I breastfed my daughter for two yrs and would never consider the Mirena for myself while breastfeeding.

I exclusively breast fed my daughther for WAY longer than I planned, =). I got the Mirena when she was about 6 months old (and still breast feeding a LOT) and she has only been fully weaned just recently at 19 months. We never had ANY problems, she didn't even notice. And I noticed no change in milk supply. Let me add, that while I feel strongly about things too, I try not to scare people when I recommend against something. I was freaked out by some of these ladies and their cries of "don't do it!" I hope you will consider your own body and previous reaction to hormonal birth control as well as other factors like, do you have heavy menstrual bleeding are you at risk for having it? After my daughter was born it was like someone pulled a cork and my periods were INSANE. I already have an anemia disorder was knew that these heavy periods were hereditary and knew I needed to stem them. I had a HORRIBLE reaction to Yasmin but knew I needed to give this a try before a went the route that can be permanantly sterilizing. I have had no adverse reaction to the miniscule amount of hormones in the Mirena. Also, the hormones in Mirena are localized and not systemic. They are placed where they need to be and do not horn in overmuch on other systems in your body. My periods that were once actually scary for me, are almost nonexistant. Good luck.

Mirena is safe for nursing. It is a low hormone bc. I had no problems with it , I nursed my son for just over a year. and am on my second Mirena.

I have it and breast fed with it without any trouble. It was such a pain at first. I was having a period every 2 weeks, very heavy bleeding and cramps. The doc said give it a couple more months, as this is actually common. So I did. Everything regulated after a few months and no more trouble. I weened my daughter 6 months ago (when she turned 3) without issue. I used the micronor (sp?) pill with my first daughter, who I nursed to 18 months. It did not bother my milk supply, but I did get pregnant while on it ;)

Worked for me. I got it inserted 8 weeks post partum and nursed for 19 months. Didn't have any supply issues, I was never a super producer but it was always enough for my daughter, so I never had to supplement.

yes and it def lowered my supply. I took it out. If you don't want to risk it I would just use something else until your baby is done bfeeding.

I had to many problems with it! I know some will say it is wonderful, but please look into the other aspect of it. How will it effect you? What are the side effects? If you have any questions please PM me! I would gladly tell you everything I have learned, had happened and what other people have told me! Dont do it!
