Hi Moms,
My 14 month old is still on soy formula. I breastfed til he was about 10 months old at which time we weaned himself because he couldn't be bothered to lay still long enough. He went straigh to a cup...too busy for the bottle too. I pumped til he was a year old and then tried switching to milk but he got terrible diarrhea and diaper rash. Regular formula bothered him too. So we tried soy and that worked. I've been trying milk here and there but he always gets diarrhea and I stop. The pediatrician says that we can keep him on formula til he's 2 years old which really stresses me out since it's so expensive and a pain to mix 4 times a day. I was wondering if I should just keep giving it to him in small amouts (mix mostly formula with just a splash of milk) and see if the diarrhea stops? Or will that not work and I'll just be torturing him? Does anyone have any experience with this? If I have to do formula I'll keep doing formula, it's not that big of a deal, but milk would be sooo much easier.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I also want to point out that he's not allergic to milk ( we had an allergy test done) just intolerant. I will try lactose-free and see how he does with that. And why do I need to give him milk...he loves the white stuff and if I sometimes forget to give it to him he is miserable.

At 14 mos, I would move him off of formula to Soy Milk or Rice Milk (both less than formula). My son had milk protein intolerance (not lactose) and did finally outgrow it at about 2 years. Can he eat cheese and other dairy? My son loved the rice milk - plain not flavored. Cheapest at Walmart or costco. It's also fortified with vitamins as well. Good luck.

Both of my children have a milk intolerance. My daughter loved milk, but would vomit after having a full serving. (This was between 12 and 18 months) My son also had issues. We had to put my daughter on soy milk, but my son did fine on lactose-free milk; it's still a little more expensive than regular milk, but I believe it's cheaper than formula, and you CAN get lactose-free whole milk. It won't hurt to try. BTW, most people are lactose-intolerant, from what I've read.

Milk is NOT what is used to be.

I am a family wellness coach and here are two of the sources that I trust:

http://search.mercola.com/Results.aspx?q=milk&k=milk

Do your due diligence. My children are 14 and 11 and there is no animal milk, cows, goats NOTHING in this house, hasn't been for years. We have found almond milk for the odd recipe etc.

If you want a healthy option, www.BestBreakfastEver.com. I have clients with kids as young as 6 months who prefer this to formula.

PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF. Things are not as they seem.

87% of most humans are allergic to dairy, I would not worry about trying to get your child to like it, apparently it does not agree with your child. There are wonderful alternatives such as almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk. I have a six year old daughter who has never had milk due to constipation and she loves almond milk and now coconut milk. You can buy them in your local grocery store or make them yourself.

I would not worry about the milk or the formula at 14 months if he is eating well otherwise.

I would make muffins with lots of freshly-ground flax seed and coconut oil. You can let him have full-fat coconut milk too, or use it in smoothies. You want to make sure he is getting lots of good fats (coconut oil, flax oil, avocado, nuts, free-range eggs, grass-fed butter, etc.) and calcium from other sources (broccoli and dill are good sources.)

I would not try to sneak milk into things if he has a hard time tolerating it.

Our first son had a milk soy protein intolerance. We had to use rice milk until he was about 15 months. I wouldn't keep giving him milk if he can't handle it. Try again in a few months.

Is there a reason that he HAS to have milk? He should be fine to just replace his dairy with yogurt, cheese, etc.

I wouldn't put him on cow's milk if he is having this reaction. You should understand that it is not an ALLERGY - but rather that he is missing something that allows him to digest milk proteins. You can add that through proper supplementation, or you can avoid the milk. If he's missing what allows him to process milk, adding milk (splash or otherwise) isn't going to fix it. And most people will tell you that the purpose of cow's milk is to turn a 100 pound calf into an 800 pound steer in 6 months - so there's no reason that people need to consume it. The problem will be with other dairy products that you want him to enjoy - yogurt, cheese, ice cream, etc. as well as not having to limit him in situations where he's going to come across dairy products (birthday parties, preschool, etc.). In that case, you'll want to work on eliminating the problem through supplementation.

I would either go to a proper supplement, or I would go to another "milk" product, either soy milk or lactose free cow's milk or rice milk, etc.

No matter what you do, it's going to cost money!! But it's better than diarrhea (extra diapers) and rash (extra creams) and doctor's visits (co-pays).
