Mildew Smell in Carpet
Help! I accidentally knocked over my son's humidifier in his room. It spilled ALOT of water on the carpet. My husband put a towel over it to soak it up. But now, a few days later it REALLY smells like mildew in his room. Any suggestions on how to clean it or get the smell out? We are trying to sell our house and I am sure this smell won't help matters! Thanks so much!

You've got some great suggestions here but I would ask some friends or neighbors if they have a wet/dry vac you can borrow to soak up any remaining water before treating.

Hi Jennifer,
My parents run Joy Carpet Dry Cleaning in Plano. If you call and ask for Darlene (my mother), she can give you some advice on what to do. I would think you would need to pull the carpet back and treat the pad underneath as well as the carpet in order to really get the smell out. When I had a leak under my sink that's what her technicians did at my house. Then they put fans on it to dry it out.

Here's an article on it...

Also found these on the web as suggestions, don't know if they work:
white vinegar and water. Works on pet, vomit stains/spills too. Vinegar naturally deodorizes the smell. After blotting and allowing it to dry, I would spray some frebreeze on it. This might take a few applications.Mildew is hard to get rid of. Health wise I'd check into finding out that it isn't harming your environment.

Fill a spray bottle with water, add about 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract and spray the affected area and the smell should go away. Depending on severity of the mildew smell, may require two applications. Hope this helps you. Used car dealers use this trick to remove odors from cars before selling them ! Good Luck

It might cost a bit, but carpet companies have a spray especially for mildew. If you are close to the Mesquite/Garland area I can recommend a great carpet guy.
