Medical Transcription - Columbia, MO

I went to school for MT and worked in offices for a few years doing it, under the impression that I could move to doing it from home when I wanted to do so. I was wrong. I apparently made some mistakes that I can advise you not to do.

Most companies want you to be trained and with three years of multi-specialty/acute care experience. I went straight into a specialty not knowing this in advance. I loved psychiatry and began working for local psych hospitals and clinics. I still did history and physicals and other medical reports, but since my specialty was psych, none of the online places wanted me. So if you choose to do MT, definitely start out somewhere that has multi-specialty or acute care work. Now I work for USIS as an independent contractor doing employment verifications from home.

I'm going to have to be honest here and let you know this is one of the most difficult jobs to get from home unless you've had years of experience.

Doesn't mean it can't happen, but it's very tough. And there are scams out there too so please be careful. If it sounds too good to be true...it is.

One way to get your foot in the door with experience (if you don't have any) is to bid on jobs at elance.com or guru.com for these types of jobs. You'll probably find more transcription jobs (general), but these types of jobs and businesses are growing like wild fire so you might be more interested in this option anyways.

There is also becoming a virtual assistant. I have been a VA since 2003 (off and on and currently am) and it's a great business option for anyone who likes to be paid hourly, but wants the freedom a business offers.

I've also been a telecommuter/IC off and on for 5 years and this is another great option. (you would be an IC as a MT, but there are many other options) I'll post a few links you might want to look into as well.

I hope this has helped. I've worked at home full time since 2004 and part time for years before that ... it can and does happen, but it can take some time to locate and land a legit job.

I've already taken medical transcription and i can not get anywhere with it...so frustrating...seems alot of places wants someone with experience, so how are we going to get experience if someone doesnt give us a chance...if you find out anything please pass it along....its a very interesting field, i've almost come to the conclusion of doing medical billing from home instead. good luck.
