Making Son's 4Th Birthday Special

My husband and I are struggling with what to do for my son's birthday. First of all, he does not need any gifts. Christmas was WAY overdone at our house, and my son hardly plays with any toys at all--he is too busy following me or my husband around. However (and very unfortunately), my son thinks birthdays are when a person receives gifts. We don't want him to grow up expecting a lot of material things, but we do want his day to be special and all about him. (side note: we regularly go through his toys and clothes and make donations to Mission Arlington.) We've been thinking about doing something we've never done before--just Mom, Dad, and him. But . . . we don't know what to do!!! He's been to the zoo, the Dallas Aquarium, and Glenrose, all very recently. We've considered Great Wolf Lodge, but neither my husband or I is too keen on leading my son around through the waterpark trying to convince him to do the things he's intimidated by. And, the extended family will be slightly disappointed that we are not having a "party".

Do you have any suggestions about any aspects of my situation? I would love any ideas you may have about changing the gift-receiving expectation or any ideas you have on what we could do as a family! Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

Nash Farms in Grapevine is fun. You could do a day trip to the farm and per the animals and climb all over the tractors.
You could go camping at Cedar Hill State Park and teach him to fish. All little boys like camping. Then have a birthday bbq at the lake. Extended family could just pay the day pass to get in for the bbq.
There is an indoor play place in Grand Prairie called Abbeys Plalyhouse. They do parties. There's a jump up place in S Arlington off Cooper and Sublet that does parties. It's a giant bounce house full of inflated bounce houses and slides.
Ellens Amusements in Cedar Hill, I think it''s off 1382 maybe, is crazy cheap. Go carts, batting cages, putt putt, video games. My 3 and 4 yr old loved riding inthe go karts with us. You can find coupons online.

My 4 yo likes museums. A friend's family goes to chuckie cheese's for the kids birthdays. What about staying overnight at a local hotel with a pool or something like ice skating or bowling if these aren't things you normally do? Just get a few balloons and a pizza, a present or two, maybe a special birthday hat and he should be all set.

All kids, think of their birthdays as special and receiving gifts. That is childhood. Its okay. It is his special day.

For my son who is now 4, we didn't have a party or anything, but just at home, I made him a cake, hid his presents like a treasure hunt game, decorated with balloons, and me/Hubby/him/his sister and Grandma, all had dinner together. I just made his favorite food.
He felt special, thought is was special and he had a real nice time.

Kids this age, don't need over the top things.

I know MANY parents, who, do not do big to do parties for their kids who are young. Until they are older and in elementary school.

My kids also have way too much stuff...I am fond of art supplies, clothes and books as gifts. Give him a little folding chair and other gear, and go to a lake or state park. Go "camping" without the overnight part. Cook hot dogs, fish, wade in the water, throw rocks, hike, etc. Make smores, then go home. My kids just love to be outside. Take him to one of the pottery places and let him paint his own pottery. Tour the Ranger Stadium. Ride the train in Fort Worth. Go to the Gaylord Texan - really cool to just run around in - and they have a sports themed restaurant where you could have lunch. Go on a fastfood/park tour if the weather is nice. Have breakfast at McDonalds, then go play in a park, such as the one on Green Oaks. Then eat lunch at Chick Fil A and visit a different park. Get ice cream, then go to the planetarium at UTA. Go to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History - recently reopened and very hands on, especially for the younger ones.

I am excited to see what kind of answers you will get. My husband and I have been talking about the same thing for our daughters 4th birthday. I am so tired of all the parties and want to do something that she has not done or would really enjoy and make it special. Plus, she does not need any toys either.

What about seeing if Disney on Ice is in your area.
