Major Changes to Hair Since Birth of Son

Try not to freak out. I know this is hard. I too have naturally curly hair and had major changes during and after the birth of my daughter, who is now 13 months. Although my trouble was extreme dryness (so I washed less), major tangles ( used lots of conditioner...let set...and combed out in shower..then used leave-in conditioner spray), then after birth...hair loss. This was mainly at my temples, and to me very noticeable. I wore a pony tail most of the time. My sister went thru the same thing and my stylist said she had seen it before and it would come back....and I wouldn't go bald (luckily I've got lots of hair), and my OB said...hormones. It has come back..along with some grays, but I can still tell the difference after 13 months...it's getting there. Just consider this one of the things we moms go thru for our precious babies. It's worth it!

I had inconsistent wavy hair before I had my sons. Now I have curly hair and my sons are 7 & 10. I had moles appear after both births and my hair and nails have been healthier and stronger since then as well. I have hair growing in places it didn't grow before (i.e., chin). I didn't have allergies until after I had my kids too. I've heard other moms have had similar type changes.

I used to have slightly wavy hair, could brush it & have no problems. When I had my first daughter, I found out that I had a thyroid problem, of course I found that out after I cut all my hair off.
Since then, it has become very curly, she was 6 months old at the time & is now 14 years. Now if I brush it after it's dry, I look like Roseanne Roseanna Danna (sp?).
I just deal with it now & use alot of hair products.

I had straight hair and after having my son I have curly hair. My hair was also falling out right after, but it evenetually stopped. My doctor said it's the hormone changes that cause the difference...it could change back after the next child. So, you're not alone!

I too am having issues with my hair. I have a six week old. When he was about 4 weeks, I went and got a perm-since I was told I could not get one during pregnancy. Well, I have never had an issue like this before-my hair is like I never got the perm!

I was told by several of my friends that it is because of my hormones.

Possibly same for you.
I was also told that maybe it is from meds that I had in hospital along with hormones. (Epidural)

Yes, T., I experienced pretty much the same thing. My hair may not have been quite as curly as yours, but it did have curl. It went to straight, and sometimes frizzy. My son is now 17, soon 18, and it is still pretty straight. Glad to know that someone else experienced the same thing. Good luck with your new son. They are a joy. That is until they become a "TEENAGER". LOL

I had changes in my hair with each of my 3 children. With my first 2 it seemed to have gotten more curly but with my 3rd I lost my curls until the last few months and now they are back. My 3rd child is now 7yrs. old. Hang in there! I'm sure it has to do with all the hormone changes. Congrats on motherhood!

My hair went from light blond to dirty blond after my son was born. I had to start getting highlights! It has never gotten back to its original color, but has lightened up quite a bit over the past few years. Mine also fell out some, but it was really not noticeable to anyone but me. Good luck, this is normal.

The same exact thing happened to me. I had super curly hair...ringlets like you. And after each pregnancy my hair relaxed a bit. Now it is still curly but the curl is alot looser. Personally, I find the hair I have now easier to manage. I use Herbal Essence Spray gel. I found it is really the only gel that controls the frizz (for me) with out making my hair too stiff. I spray it on while my hair is still wet and just let it air dry. Super easy. Hope this helps! Welcome to motherhood, where even your hair changes!lol!

Hi T., although then texture of my hair did not change, I did lose a lot of it. A woman's hormones are all out of whack after having a baby and especially if you are nursing. After nursing my hair did return to normal. It was pretty scary but it grew back and then some. So I wouldn't worry. Hope this helps.

Well mine isn't changing, but it is falling out!! Big clumps of hair come out when I shower and brush my hair. I thought something was wrong with me! My hair dresser told me it was completely normal. My son just turned 5 months and she said it was just hormones!

I am a hairstylist and can explain this a little bit.

Pregnancy can cause changes to your "pores" where the hair root connects inside of your scalp. The way the root is shaped and angeled in your scalp effects how your hair lays on your head. If the root is straight, your hair will be straight, if the root in your scalp is at an angle, your hair will be curly.

Chemotherapy and pregnancy can alter the root shaft so that it tilts a bit differently. My dad used to have stick straight hair, and after chemo it came back very curly!

Also, your hair will start to fall out (mine is in clumps right now), but this too is normal shortly after the birth of a baby. Throughout your pregnancy, the hair that you will typically lose doesn't release, that is why women have lush, thick hair when they are pregnant. After delivery, all tat hair that didn't fall out suddenly falls out and it feels like eyou are losing a ton of it.

Color can also be somewhat affected by hormones. Your hair may go back to curly, but most likely not as curly as before.

I had stick-straight hair before my kids were born. Couldn't hold a curl from a curling iron. Now my hair is wavy all over and I straighten it (Isn't that ironic?) but as soon as it gets a tiny bit wet my hair gets wavy again. Also my hair is thicker now. But anyway, no it never went back. I have 4 kids and my hair has stayed this way, even through subsequent pregnancies. I guess it's time to try out some new hairstyles. LOL Good Luck!

When I was young I had curly hair. As I got older it straightened out. I have had 2 boys and now it is very curly..
I dont know who to change it back.. Your body has just gone through some changes all the way to the roots.
