I gave birth in January... and just in the past month my hair is falling out like a Golden Retriever in August... uff. Anyone have any advice, or even know how long I will be shedding? Anyone else experience this after childbirth?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice and encouragement... I ended up cutting my hair.. SHORT. LOVE IT!! Especially with the recent heat wave. Now my baby cant grab my hair, if it does fall out, I hardly notice. :) and the bathroom drain has been much better too! HAHAHHAA
In fact, I dont know if I could do long again. (I am a true mom now)

I gave birth in Jan. as well and am just now getting back to normal. This was my second and I had hoped it would be less this time (it wasn't.) It's totally normal though. The one thing that has helped me both times for whatever reason was a haircut. I don't know why. I got quite a bit cut off the first time but just a trim this time around. Both times I seemed to lose less hair afterwards. Geez, and what a great reason to go to a salon!

I agree with Celina, about the progesterone cream. After I had my second, I had homocidal PMS, and started using Happy PMS cream. The first month my symptoms had reduced by about half, and about 3 months after that, had almost vanished. I still use it 5 years later, and my period is regular, and starts on a Friday and is over by Sunday! YEAH!!!! Check out www.happypmscream.com for info.

Losing hair is very common after childbirth. You probably didn't lose much during pregnancy and your hair is going back to normal. Continue taking your prenatal vitamins (or something comparable) for another year. This will help your body and your hair return to normal quicker.

Talk to your doctor. But it could also be completely normal. Remember you loose from 50 to 100 hairs a day (I know it sounds crazy) I have 2 children and I lost hair like crazy for up to 9 months afterwards and they tested my thyroid (it was normal both times...) Also if you are taking any medications there can be rare side effects that can be effecting you now since the birth of your baby. I am now taking a medication for migraines that actually causes my hair to fall out too... so definitely look at all causes... Best of luck.

Yeah, I gave birth in March and I'm having the same thing happen. I thought I read somewhere that it's normal. I have enough so I'm not too worried about it, it is a pain in the butt though. I'm always afraid it's going to end up in our meal! I think it gets better by the 6 mo or year mark though. Check on the babycenter and see what they say about it. I think that's where I heard about it. Good luck with everything:)

Losing hair after childbirth is a combination of descreasing estrogen levels and stopping prenatal vitamins. However, don't worry. It is replaced with new hair and the shedding should taper off. I too experienced this and now regularly use a natural progesterone cream that has helped my headaches, cramps, energy, and hair loss. If you want more information about that, please send me a private message.

Good Luck!

Sorry to say, hair loss is normal. The same thing happened to me after the birth of my daughter. My hair was brittle and stringy for about 5-6 months. It took a full year for it to grow back to a more healthy condition. Best advice is to use a good conditioner and make sure your diet includes heathy fats. Adding a little olive oil to the normal recipies you make helps. Your body just put everything into growing a human being. The nutrients that help grow hair and nails have been striped. According to everything I have read it just takes time to replenish. Rest and healthy eating are the best cure.

This is a common "alement" of having a baby. I think it is something to do with your hormones and the fact that while you were pregnant you loose a lot less hair than normal. It seemed like after my baby it continued for about 5 or 6 months. Sucks while you are in the shower you feel like your hair is falling out. Don't worry it will go away. :)

Losing hair could be an indicator that something could be askew with your thyroid. You may want to talk with your doctor.

You might have your Dr check your iron levels. I was very anemic after having my child and my hair fell out!
