Hi S., it is hard to have a home based job unless you own your own business, I know the people I know who work at home, srated out with a company, like you being home with my kids was important, I tried everything from stuffing envelopes, to making jewlry, Herbalife, Tupperware, Home Interiors, sold Christmas Cards, and none of it worked, so I started my own home daycare, and I have had it for, well July will be 12 years, it's easy to get licensed, you charge the amount you want, like right now I charge 120.00 a week well I can have 8 kids, I have the potential to earn 3,840.00 a month, right now I only have 4 kids, so I an only making half that right now, but when I'm full that's what I will be earning. Like Julie L. said, doing baby-sitting is pretty much instant income. I did that too, until I had my 2nd child.
And it brings in good money. YOU can decide on your hours... and if you babysit daytime or nigh-time.

Or, you look for telecommuting jobs... mostly from word of mouth, or people who have inside info. on their companies.

It depends what kind of experience you have... computer/tech jobs are more prone to having telecommuting/work from home jobs or positions.

Or, you work as a 'freelancer.' Of which there are many free lancing work sites. I don't know which ones are 'legit' or reputable.

I'm not aware of any legitimate work at home companies. I work from home full-time, and the way I fell into it was that I worked for the company for several years, they downsized our LA office, and they let me stay on and work from home. I'm not sure what kind of background you have, but I'm in accounting. One of my friends is also an accountant, and she had a job for several years working for one of the investment houses call centers. Basically, when someone called to ask how much they could contribute to their IRA this year, the phone would ring at her house.

I think it's easier to work for a big company from home as they have the systems to make it work - I can log on to my company's network anywhere, anytime, provided I have a computer and a network connection.

I also think it's easier for companies to trust you to do the work they are paying you to do if they have some experience with your work ethic. Is there a former employer you could approach about doing some work from home? Or do you have a unique skill set that would allow you to do freelance work or work as an independent contractor, such as a graphic designer or writing technical manuals?

I've always been wary of "work from home" companies. Like prev. post, look into what you are good at and what your passion is and see what comes from that. I've had great response from word of mouth doing bookkeeping from home. A friend trolls garage sales and does e-bay. Another is a mobile Notary. I think, especially nowadays, it's more about making your own.

A great way to stay at home with your baby, and work is start a writing career. There are a number of free writing sites that you can earn money on with your articles.
