Hi. I have 2 children, ages 5 and 9. I am looking for inexpensive ideas for things to do on the weekends. We live in Lewisville, but I any where in the metroplex is fine. We are looking for new ideas. We have done the putt-putt, main event, bowling, skating. Any places you know of, that maybe are new concept, or off the beaten path, or ????? I'll take any suggestions.

Thanks!

Have you been to Fossil Rim in Glenrose? It's one of my favorite weekend outings. Takes about an hour to get there but it's so much fun. It's a wildlife park that you drive through and the animals walk up to your car to eat the food that you can buy at the park entrance. The giraffes are my favorite, they're so gentle and will eat right out of your hand. There's also a state park nearby, Dinosaur Valley. There are dinosaur fossils in the riverbed there that you can see. It makes for a pretty fun day trip!

I have a yahoo group that I run...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WhatToDoDFW/

It's free to join and you can invite your friends to join as well. I try to keep it updated with all sorts of activities sorted by monthly calendars (in the Files section) so you can see all sorts of things to do around the metroplex on any given day.

Maybe that will help.

The Water Works water park in Denton is fun and inexpensive. Your local library may have weekend activities for older children (movies, etc.). Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville is only about $4 per ticket. It's not a very big zoo, but it's a great morning out. Kids get to feed the giraffes, there's a GREAT playground and shady park for picnics, and they offer train rides around the park a few days a week. Also, downtown Denton is about to have some sort of Elvis scavenger hunt that might be fun for the whole family (http://www.dentonmainstreet.org/default.aspx).
We've had fun taking kids to the Dallas Farmer's Market. They had fun picking out fruits and vegetables (and tasting them all along the way!). You might find some local events at www.visitlewisville.com. "Pinocchio" is playing this weekend at First United Methodist Church in Lewisville. The Highland Village Balloon Festival is in a couple weeks. It's tons of fun! www.hvballoonfest.org

Sandy Lake Park is easy to get to from Lewisville. They have amusement park rides, paddle boats, games ect. http://www.sandylake.com/sandylake.html
Also I have heard that Dove Park (1509 Hood Lane) in Grapevine has a splash playground now. I have been meaning to check this out myself.
You probably know that Valley View mall has a small indoor playground. Though it is geared toward younger children and is packed when it's hot out.
Have you considered going go carting? My 5 yr old daughter has become an expert at it. She loves driving about the track. It makes her feel grown up. We go to SpeedZone in Dallas on Malibu.
The local pool on Main is excellent. It has a splash palyground, lazy river, and 2 water slides.
Also the Library in Lewisville has Story time:

I live in Little Elm and have recently discovered the website http://www.frisco-online.com/ It has a calendar which allows you to seach local events by category, one of which is things to do with kids. I have often found things to do there I would not have known about otherwise.
