My son LOVES books, and we have a pretty large collection, but he's memorized so many of them. Does anyone have any suggestions for specific titles or authors that he might enjoy?

His current favorites -- Dr. Seuss (of course), Disney books, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Curious George, Richard Scary's Little Critter books...amongst others.

I am hoping to have several new books to take with us on our upcoming 4 hour flight.

So What Happened?

Wow, lots of GREAT suggestions!!! I looked up many of the suggestions at our library and most are currently on shelf, so I'll just check them out and make an inventory list to bring with so I keep close track of them all. I even found a few books on CD which will do nicely for the 1 hour trip between the airport and where we'll be visiting.

Thanks for all the recommendations!!

I have a 5 year old son and a 3 1/2 year old son. Anything construction or trucks, they have a Shark book that is actually very educational and a pop up so its fun for them. And one of their faves is Llama Llama Red Pajama. Also, just for education sake, My boys are very good at memorizing too, so we have a book of all the planets. Each planet has a little rhyme with it, I started reading that to them a few months ago and starting "quizzing" them on it. Both my boys know their planets by the look of the planet. They know little facts that I didn't know until reading this book. Like Neptune has a cloud named Scooter lol. Might be fun for you guys. I mean how many people can say that their 3 year old knows their planets?

Check out Daddyread.com-awesome recommendations for the preschool set. Also, introduce your son to simple chapter books or comic books. The dialogue and more complicated plot develops reading comprehension and attention span-both areas that boys in general need to strengthen. Check out award winners as well for great books-Monarch awards are chosen by kids! For a long flight, I would also suggest different kinds of books such as puzzle books, I Spy (they make even simple board books), even a blank journal where you could write/illustrate your own adventure story about your trip! Have fun!

I tend to be more practical than creative. Here's what I would do: buy a large stack of thin, paperback books. You'll be able to get a nice variety that will not become a burden in your carry-on. The size that I'm talking about is no more than 8 inches x 8 inches, and each book is about as thick as a button. Walmart has this size book for Dora and Diego stories, Arthur, Curious George, and other recognizable characters. You may find nature and historical books in this size at Borders or Barnes and Noble, too, depending on what your son likes. The Step Into Reading rack at Barnes and Noble has an excellent selection of expository books that are sized right for airplane travel.

I don't have a favorite author, but I have a few favorite books. I'll only list the ones that fit the 8x8 profile I described earlier ;)
Mem Fox - Whoever You Are
Karen Beaumont - I Like Myself!
Laura Joffe Numeroff - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Don Freeman - Corduroy
Margaret Wise - The Runaway Bunny (oops, that one is more like 8x11 ;)

Have a great trip! Don't forget to pack a few new snacks!

It depends on what he likes.
My soon-to-be 3 loves jungle animals, so all books related to them.
His favorites are "Hippo goes bananas" and "Bill and Pete".

And he still enjoys very much the Eric Carle's books (Polar bear what do you see?, Brown bear what do you hear?, the grouchy ladybug, 1 2 3 to the zoo) even if he outgrew most of them.

For your long trip, as your son enjoys Disney, they do some larger books with many short stories in them (for example, 365 bedtime stories).

You could try the library, test the books before buying them.

We LOVE everything by Barefoot Books! My 2.5 year old loves the sing-a-longs (we download them on our iPods)- especially Animal Boogie and Driving My Tractor, and I LOVE the illustrations in Listen, Listen by Allison Jay. We're big Barefoot fans. They have beautiful illustrations and are a bit harder to find, but some libraries carry them, or you can shop for them at www.ReadandGrow.com. I live in Westchester and sell them, so if you are leaving soon and wanted them quick, I could drop them off for you.

Have a great trip!

Our FAVORITEs were Frog & Toad (there are 4, each with about 5 or 6 mini-stories in them) and the Franklin books (Franklin is the little boy turtle - there is a Canadian cartoon of it also). Franklin is GREAT. Most of the stories teach something... similar to the Berenstein Bears books... about telling the truth, being friends, being scared of the dark, being on time, sneaking peaks of your birthday presents, etc etc. Also.. IF you might be planning a sibling... there is an AWESOME 90 minute animated movie (Franklin and The Green Knight) about Franklin coming to terms with his mother having a baby. He goes on an adventure with his best friend (snail) and learns an awful lot in a very interesting story.

The Little Bear animated shows are also quite age appropriate and my son liked them around ages 3 and 4. Little Bear also is in books, but they are not very brightly colored or have much artwork. The Franklin books are very colorful and interesting to look at.

Skippy Jon Jones- they are awesome! I have them now and they are just a little too advanced for my 2 yr old, so I think they'd be perfect for a 3 yr old. (that was the recommended age but I bought them anyways). Judy Schachner is the author, and they are about a naughty siamese kitty boy who has imaginary adventures where he is a chihuahua. If you can do a silly spanish accent they are even funnier. There are at least 4 or 5 of them.

My sons really liked the Dumb Bunnies series of books. They are about a family of bunnies who do things the wrong way. I.e. they celebrate Christmas with Easter Eggs and Halloween decorations and just silly backwards things like that. My sons thought it was hilarious how those bunnies don't have a clue about things...
My boys also liked Bad Kitty and a series of books with move character animals. I can't remind all of them, but their favorite one is called Dogzilla.
