I am looking for a pediatrician, perferably male, one that speaks good English with friendly staff. I have already called two offices here in Mesquite, and the staff there were very rude, and I was kept on eternal hold.

I need a physicain that will really listen to my concerns, and not just rush us in and out like cattle.

Any great referrals would be appreciated. Thank you

I use Dr Gregory Sonnen in Mesquite at baylor fam med center. he is very to the point and very good. My 5 year old has been having some issues that could not be detected by other doctors but he was able to get down to the problems and send us to the proper specialists. Sometimes I do not like his bedside manners but he is the only dr I have ever fully trusted with all 3 of my children. My 7 month old has also had a flu before he was a month old and rsv when he was 6 months and he was great while treating him. He is very perticular and attention to detail.

I would recommend Dr. Lisa Swanson to you, but she is not male. I can tell you that the other qualifications she meets. She is eager to listen and to ask questions to find out more info. She is also willing to research and look into new treatment. She does run late a lot because she spends so much time with each patient. She works with two nurse practitioners, and they are very prompt and also very good. If I want a quick visit I see them. I had been through 3 doctors trying to find someone who would listen and treat me like my input was important (one of my daughters has difficulty gaining weight). Anyway, the practice is called Mesquite Pediatrics and it is located on Gus Thomasson near Town East Rd. The phone number is ###-###-####

Try Dr Rosemary Roseberry in Garland. She has a son with austism. The first time I took my sons there she gave them 3 to 4 hr check ups. My youngest son has learning disabilities and she is awesome with him. Hope this helps. My kids even like her!

I realize that you are wanting a male doctor. I do not know of any in Mesquite that I would recommend. I have looked high and low for a doctor here in this area, but to no avail. It is pretty pathetic around here if you ask me. I do however know of a wonderful female doctor who is located in Garland right next to Baylor-Garland on Clara Barton, Dr. Rosemary Rosberry (dont let the name fool you.). She and her nurse Vicky are absolutely wonderful. They never make you feel rushed in or out. She ALWAYS takes time to get the childs problem. She always says that there is always more than runny noses, tummy aches and fevers. We have been with her for about 8 years now. There in the same practice is Dr. Basal. We have seen him on a couple occassions when Dr. Roseberry has been out. He is pretty laid back, too. I hope this helps.

We use Joe Neely in Dallas. I've found and heard from numerous other moms they sometimes feel a little rushed by him. I have a feeling this is something he would give his full attention. His staff are great though and I am fully confident in his ability. (I'm an ER nurse) I think that's par for the course. I have heard wonderful things about Jeffrey Nail and the female docs in Neely's group - particularly Karen Halsell. It sounds as though your son needs some intervention. I'm assuming at 5 that he is in school. Have you had a frank discussion with his teacher? They should be able to set up an evaluation for special services. Plano is a wonderful district for speech therapy (strongly recommended for autism and aspbergers (sp?)) Clearly, I'm not a pedi nurse. There are a lot of social skills which can be taught and it sounds like you've taken the most difficult first step, which is acknowledging there may be a problem. Good for you and best of luck in finding the help you need.

Have you ever gone on the about.com Parenting:Babies & toddlers > forum?
They have a lot of moms sharing their stories and problems regarding their kids. I have got a lot of help from those moms, maybe you can join the forum and see if anyone has the same problem as your son. When I hear about your story, I think your son might just be a little bit behind. And I think he is normal for his age because my friend's daughter was like that too. She couldn't even speak when she was almost 3. Once she got to school, things seem to improve a lot. She is doing very well now. Good luck.

It is a shame that your current pediatrician did not refer you to the state early childhood intervention agency before he turned 3. The state provides early testing, evaluation and intervention services from newborn to age 3. However, after age 3 it is provided through your local school district. My 7 year old daughter has similar issues and received therapies as an infant and then at age 3 was enrolled in a special preschool program through the school district that got her ready for regular school. If I were you, while searching for the perfect pediatrician, contact your local Mesquite school district NOW, before school is out for summer, and tell them you want your child evaluated. If they hesitate, you must insist, because you are well within your rights to receive it. Chances are, if he turns 5 in August, he may not be ready to start Kindergarten in the fall if he is delayed like you say. The school district provides a special preschool program called PPCD (preschool program for children with disabilities) through age 5. My daughter benefitted tremendously from that program, once we found the right one. The first PPCD they put her in was terrible. The second one was wonderful.

It may be that there is nothing wrong with him that a little time won't mature...and wouldn't that be great? However, if there is something else going on, like with my daughter, it's best to nip it in the bud as early as possible. Good luck and keep me informed.

Remember that you are your child's best advocate. You have to listen to your heart. You are the only one who loves him as much as you do. If I only listened to my daughter's pediatrican we wouldn't have found out about her cranial synastosis which required surgery.

God Bless.

I'm an early childhood special education teacher who taught for 13 years before I became a stay-at-home mom. Do you know about the Rise School in north Dallas? It's a school for young children with developmental delays and they do comprehensive developmental assessments. You do need a form signed by a physician, but they provide individualized education and speech therapy (possibly phsical therapy also). Once you find a physician this may be something to ask him about, or whether there is a similar school nearer you. Here's the link: http://www.riseschool.org/dallas/index.html

My son's pediatrician has an autistic child of her own. She is wonderful and always ready to listen. The down side is that she is in high demand so the wait at the office is always pretty long, but she is worth it.
Her name is Rosemary Roseberry and she is apart of Pediatric and Adolescent Associates of Garland ph.###-###-####

Hi,S.,
My name is I. and I have a 8 mo. old baby girl. My friend advised me to try this pediatrician - Dr. Bassell. He is not in Mesquite but in Baylor Hospital at Garland that is not that far. He is excellent so is his staff. He takes long time to go through all your concerns and questions. I don't know if he is specializing in Autism but it's worth trying. The main number for scheduling an appointment is ###-###-####, option *3. The wait is alittle bit long sometimes but it is because he really spends time with his patients. Give him a try. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
I have been taking my four year old daughter to Dr. Gregory Sonnen since she was an infant. He is very thorough and open to all questions. He is with the the Baylor Family Medical Center in Mesquite on Republic Parkway. I never have a problem getting a same day appointment and the staff is very friendly.
