Looking for a Great Hairstylist North of Boston

I've been living in the Boston area for nearly 5 years and have yet to find a stylist that gives me a consistently great cut. I've been making due with local salons because my cut has been VERY basic (shoulder length with layers around my face). Now I'm ready for a serious hair makeover - I'm sick of ALWAYS pulling my hair back in a ponytail! I want a drastic change - to something short and sassy. But I'm not inclined to go to just anyone. I'd LOVE to hear suggestions of salons north of Boston. I live in Chelmsford and I'm willing to travel as much as 30 minutes for the right talent. I'm avoiding Newbury Street - I'd like to get the cut and blowdry for around $75.

What can I do next?

If you are willing to drive to Cambridge I can highly recommend two places: Alfred Hair Salon (many members of my family go there and we all go to Thomas -- he co-owns it with Alfred. Alfred has a great reputation also) or The Carriage House Salon (I've had my hair cut with Miguel and thought he did a great job). Good Luck!

Hi my name is J. and I own The Hair Cottage in Pepperell, Ma....Our 5 experienced hair stylists would love to meet you. We have lowered our prices for 2010 to help in this tough economy. Our w/c/blowdry is $25, our colors start at $50, our highlights start at $55 etc. We also do waxing and have a great esthetician for waxing and facials. I go to great salon in Hudson, Ma called Sereni Salon. It's right off 495 and from Lowell takes me just about 30 mintues. I usually see the owner, Paula, but recently have been seeing a junior stylist, Stephanie. I have been extremely pleased with both. They know a lot about hair and have challenged me to try some new things with mine--I've never been disappointed!

My hairstylist for over 10 years is Joann at Philip Ciampa Salon in Andover. ###-###-####. She is the most talented hairstylist in the area. Trained and worked in Beverly Hills for 10 years. She is always on the cutting edge of hair, and also the most creative colorist around! It's worth the trip, she is truly amazing!

Hi Meredith,
I also live in Chelmsford (Walnut Street) & have been going to the Galleria salon for more than 4 years. While it does not have the ambiance of a salon in Boston (I used to live in NYC), I think that you'll find the people there are friendly, they offer a wide range of services, & the prices are great (I pay less than $100 for a cut & color)! If you're interested, Jeannie cuts my hair & the phone # there is ###-###-####.
Good luck,
R.

Cassandra's in Nashua is great, they get written up in Glamour Magazine almost every year as best of Boston. Sandy or Kristin do my hair, and can copy any cut from any magazine photo I have ever brought. High end fashion, and a great day spa too. You won't come out looking like a suburbanite, you will look very downtown, without having to go downtown.
Good luck,
D.

Jen at Salon Luna in Porter Square, Cambridge is fantastic!! I've been going to her for years and sent many others there. I get lots of compliments on my cut. Try her out! She's $52 for cut and blowdry (and she is an awesome colorist, as well, BTW).

I have a hairdresser that I have been going to for 20 years, since I was 16. She is awesome, her salon is awesome. She has 3 or 4 other hairdressers there as well and they are all great. I have a couple of times seen others (b/c of time crunch on my part, etc) but I always stick to her. She has great advice, is wonderful and ALWAYS does an awesome job. I have had many changes over the years and she always pulls through for me. I would and am highly recommending her to you. As a matter of fact, at least 10 of my friends, my Mom and now my 4 year old daughter also go to her. Her name is Kim and her salon is Bubbles and Styles located in Salem, NH right on the Methuen line. I live in Dracut and I make it there in about 20-25 minutes. Her telephone number is ###-###-####. Her prices are great, a cut and blow dry for a woman is $29.00. And, if interested they also offer nails, skincare, a massage therapist and a very cute puppy to keep you entertained. Good luck!

Hi M.,
I know what you mean about newbury st. I used to go there and stress out about trying to find parking, not to mention the expense.
There is a great salon in Windham, NH called Bella Viaggio exit 3 off 93N. It is a full service salon with nails and spa.
There stylists are great there. Very high end. They have a website so check them out. They just opened a new location that is over 6000 ft. Good luck!

I go to Cheryl at Hairmates in Stoneham, it is well worth the drive (I come from Tewksbury and it's right off of Montvale Ave on 93). She charges $50 for a cut and blowdry and is awesome with color/highlights and knowing what cut will work with your hair. I highly recommend her.

Hi M.,
My suggestion would be Louis Forte at Dellaria Spa (next to Nordstroms) in the Burlington Mall. He is very talented at what he does and has been in the business for about 25 years!

Hi M.,
I had the same issue and pulled into a random salon and sat in the hairdressers chair and describided what I wanted and she actually cut my hair the way that I wanted!!! I have never gotten more compliments on my hair in my life and now I have started playing with highlights and lowlights and it is just awesome! I go to Trendsetters in Dracut MA. I live in Lowell and to go over the bridge is a pain but worth every step of the way. I see Chenda or Kaitlyn and both are fantastic.
Good Luck and Happy makeover :)

My husband and I used to go up to the Pheasant Lane Mall - Hair Excitement, but our stylist opened up her own salon. We now go to her there. Her name is Tracy and her salon is called, "Salon Pure". It is located on 110 in Chelmsford- in front of where the old movies were (near Kohl's/Staples...) We really like her. Now our 2 year old gets her haircuts from her. They have the salon set up so that you could bring your kids (maybe not the 20 month old, but definately the 5 year old) Drop my name and you might even get a discount :)

Hi meredith - OMG!! You must RUN, not walk, to Marie DeSelle at the Wm. DeSelle Salon in Salem. Yes, Salem.

She's been cutting my hair for 25 years and I live in Nashua! I drive 1/2 each way to see her because she's worth it. (Not nearly $75 either...)

Every few years I try someone else, but I always go back to her. you will see why.

Please do yourself a favor and go see her. Email me privately and I'll get you her number - not fair to put it out on the internet!

Hi M.-

I too moved from the city and was tired of driving in to get my hair cut. A bunch of women in my neighborhood go to Marissa Michaels Salon in Andover. The more experienced stylists are pretty booked out. If you are not patient for a seasoned stylist then I would recommend Joanne. She use to work in Beverly HIlls and pretty much knows all the "celebrity cuts". She does not work on the weekend (drawback if you have kids). Cut and blow dry is $60-70.

Hi M.,
I live in Andover and I really like my hair stylist at Philip Ciampa Salon & Day Spa right in Andover center ###-###-####. The address is 28 Chestnut street Andover Ma 01810. My stylist's name is Tamra and the rates are pretty close to what you mentioned. I am not good with directions so I am not sure exactly how far it is from Chelmsford but I hope this has helped.
Take care
