My daughter is 2 months old and is still wanting to eat every 3hours even at night. I know this is not uncommon, but I was just wondering when they take the longer stretch at night. Is there a magic weight or age? I ahve a 4 yr old but its a blur how it happened with him.

What can I do next?

If you are bottle feeding you can try putting a little rice cereal in her bottle to help fill her up longer between feedings. I went through this with three boys and it does work but it will still be exhausting sometimes until she is old enough to sleep through the night

Hi E.,

I don't know that there's a magic weight or age, but it does seem that a bigger baby has a bigger tummy, therefore can be full for longer. However, it's not only hunger that will wake up a babe - it could be teething, a wet diaper, a mosquito biting her, an itchy nose, any number of things! And no way to magically know what, until they have language enough to tell you.

We didn't expect baby to sleep through the night at any given age, and we breastfed through the night, with both of us sleeping while feeding. That was our "magic trick"! She slept through the night on her own time without any pushing from us by 16-18 months old.

I've never heard of a specific weight or age-- I think it has a little bit to do with the individual child and a whole lot to do with sleep training from the parents. I read an amazing book with my 3rd child that changed my life! Secrets of the Baby Whisperer.... She teaches the EASY method-- eat, activity, sleep, you time... I used to nurse or bottle feed my babies until they fell asleep because I didn't know any better. It's best to feed them when they first wake up instead of when they are sleepy

No, there is no magic weight or age. My son began sleeping longer stretches fairly early; but I was lucky. I have two nephews; the second one is five months old, and still gets up anywhere from every 1.5 hours to every 3 hours (depends on whether he's hitting a growth spurt). :-) He is growing like crazy. And stocking up for when he starts to crawl and move around on his own!

Hang in there. I know that sleep is probably a far-distant but cherished memory; it will return to you!

God bless!

E.,
I've actually never heard of a 3 month old sleeping through the night unless they're formula babies and the parents let them "cry it out". It is not a healthy thing to do, nor is it a healthy way to think!

Remember, your little one has a TINY stomach and is growing so much that their calorie need is very high. Thus, they need to wake throughout the night to feed. Denying them this will only hinder any further progress because they won't feel their needs are being met.

If its any consolation, this stage doesn't last long. Let her choose how long she needs to wake to eat- believe it or not it bill be much easier that way. Good luck, and hopefully you can take naps!

Your daughter is perfectly normal, especially if she's breast fed. Why are you in a hurry anyway?

Both of my boys started sleeping longer stretches at 3 months. In fact (though it is a bit of a blur for me as well) I think they both were at one late night feeding a night by then. Of course, they still nursed at 11pm and then first thing in the morning. Even though they are almost 7 and a half and almost 6, I still remember that tired. It is a difficult thing to battle through. I never did b/c I don't take short ones, but if you can, nap. It will really help. Hang in there. :-)

Usually 10 pounds is the magic number. Sometimes you have to take their waking up with a grain of salt and decide if they are actually hungry or just getting into a bad habit of waking up. You will know.

Closer to four or five months if you sleep train her. At her age, as you know she is still too young to do much sleep training and unfortunately still have a few more months to go. Hang in there in the meantime - your halfway there!

All children are different. Mine varied, but were all sleeping through the night by 8-9 months. If you wait just a little longer each time before you go in you can slowly lengthen the time. Also, keep her awake for at least an hour before bed for the night. Take off her clothes, give her a bath etc.

My son is 17 weeks old and started sleeping from about 9pm-5am about 10 weeks. Every baby is different, my older son, who is almost 6, didnt sleep through the night until he was 11 months old! So, be patient:) It will happen!
