What do you all think I should do? My son Wil, 18 Months just recently started throwing tantrum like fits, but his cry is more of a pain cry. He crys uncontrollably for about an hour. It happens at random times and for no apperent reason(I dont tell him no or take something away from him) its just out of the blue. Once he settles down he wants to eat like crazy and cant seem to get it in fast enough. My son has also been a good eater and ate just about anything. Now he eats about 1 good meal a day, and the rest of the day he just wont eat. Are these things all linked together and is this just a phase or do I need to be conserned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had the dr. give him a once over and they did an upper GI Monday morning it came back that he has silent reflux. They put him on Prevacid for 2 weeks to see if I notice a diffrence. Thanks everyone for your advice!

Well, I have 3 children (3 years, 2 years, and 7.5 months) and the older 2 both went through something similar - my 2 year old just goes off for no reason. Try to remember at that age, that something really could be angering him but he may not have the vocabulary to tell you what's wrong. If it were me, though, I'd take him to the doc to also make sure there isn't a physical ailment (like silent reflux - where they don't spit up but it causes pain, etc.) especially since his eating is off too (although that is DEFINITELY a stage he will get to at some point too). Good luck - the tantrum age is JUST beginning! -

Dear J. k
If there is no apparent reasoning of why your Son cries for this amount of time I suggest 2 things. Next time this happens dont feed him immediatlely afterward. He may be connecting large amounts of food being given to him "FOR CRYING" when he finally stops crying. It's his reward for shutting up.... OR he had some intestinal things happeninglike an obstruction or something causing pain until it passes on thru? I might get some x-rays done on his tummy Jenny. Hope this helps! A. S

Being your first child I understand your concern.
I would first of all get him checked by the doctor just to be sure that nothing is medically wrong.
Most children eat when they are hungry and go through growth spurts. They may eat like crazy, never seeming to get enough to eat, then stop eating "normally". Then it seems like they grow about a foot.
As for the tantrums. Try asking him if he hurts. Sometimes it takes creative ways to communicate at his age. Listening is a learned skill when it comes to small children. To us they seem to babble when to them they are talking. Then they get mad when we do not understand them.
Good luck.

J.,
I would certainly get him looked at. It may be nothing but it is not common little ones to have pain cries for that long for no particular reason. I would make sure he had an ultrasound. Good luck.

That doesn't sound like a tantrum. It seems to long and intense. If I make my daughter sit down and "work it out" when she has a fit, it's normally only a few minutes. I'm not sure if the change in eating habits is related, my daughter would get distracted and didn't always eat good for every meal either. But I would push the issue with your doctor. Be sure to write down all the details about your sons behavior, this may help to organize your thoughts when consulting with his doctor. Good luck and listen to your gut.

This doesn't sound normal to me. Is he losing weight? Do his bowel movements look different?
He could have something going on internally that won't show up unless he is tested.
All I can say from my experience in having 2 chronically ill little girls is TRUST YOUR INSTINCT. Be an advocate for your child and if your gut feeling is that this is not normal, then get it checked out and don't take no for an answer.
My husband used to travel 3 weeks out of the month for 2.5 years, I know what it is like to be alone with small kid(s).

I had a similar experience years ago with my now 8 year old. My pediatrician explained to me that children will eat when they get hungry. That is when I stopped forcing food. Make certain that he is getting enough fluids and make sure that he is not filling his stomach with milk just prior to eating, he will not be hungry if he is drinking before eating.
