Okay so I just found out my nephew has lice. He started itching on Monday and they found them Tuesday.I checked my daughters hair and didn't see anything. We were with him on Sunday. I was wondering if she has it how long would it take to see them. If anyone knows please tell me. She has pretty long hair and so do her father and I, so we are kind of worried.

My daughter had this problem last year. She got them from someone at school. I think it takes about a week for them to start laying eggs so you probably wouldn't see them now. They move around and are hard to see. The eggs are what you will probably see first and they usually lay them around the hairline behind their ears and the hairline around their neck. I would recommend washing her hair now with solution to get rid of the lice she may have now, before they begin to lay eggs. The solution should slow down the lice and some should wash out themselves when you rinse off the solution, but you may have to brush through her hair with the comb provided to get the rest out. The eggs are harder once she gets them, because the solution doesn't affect the eggs - you'll have to find them and pinch them out. Hope this helps.

Mayonaise and a shower cap. And since all of you need to do it I would suggest going to Sams Club and buying in bulk. Saturate the hair with mayo and put the shower cap on leave in place for a few hours or overnight then wash and rinse very well. I would use a tea tree oil shampoo or you can buy a bottle of tea tree oil at walmart and pour some into your shampoo. Then go to the pet section and pick up a flea comb and comb everyones hair. You may have a few eggs left over that you have to hand pick, but this is much cheaper and more efficient than buying kit after kit of the Rid or Nix or whatever else they may sell. Make sure to wash all your bedding in HOT water as well as toys, thowpillows, and your carpets. Those little suckers get into everything.

I response to your question it usually takes about 7-10 to see them thats why you have to repeat the process of the washing and coming of the hair as a follow to insure they are all gone. Coming from a mom that has went through this and the exspense that comes also. My grandmother who was a nurse for 30 plus years told me to do this after repeated failed attempts to solve this annoying problem. Im going to recommend that you treat all your hair in (and this will sound crazy but it works)mayonaise it suffocates the lice and the oil in the mayonaise also helps you get the eggs out when you comb the hair. Saturate your everyones hair in the mayonaise and comb through allow it to set for a couple of hours. Then wash it out. Use Dawn dish soap it will cut through the oil of the mayonaise. Repeat this every 7-10 days to make sure i did this every Sunday for a month just to make sure. The mayonaise is good for your hair and inexspensive and safe. No chemicals

It is easiest to see them out in sunlight. So, play with her hair, looking at the scalp, out in the sun. Watch for any unusual itching. Or a scalp that looks like it's "moving".

I worked for many years at a camp and every session we had to check for lice. You need to take her outside in the sunlight have her flip her hair over and look near the base of her hair line and up. They prefer the warmer areas. The eggs look like a small bubble and if you try to pull on it will be stuck to the hair. If they have hatched then they will be white and you may see an actual lice in her hair. If you don't see any put her hair up over the next few days to keep the base area from being too warm. If you don't see them up to a week from the time she was with her cousin then I think you should be ok.

If your nephew just began itching, chances are he has had them about 7-10 days and the eggs just hatched. It is so much better to treat when all of the lice are immature. It will be very difficult to see lice, especially if they are new hatchlings. The best way that I have found to detect lice and treat it is to use a special lice comb called the LiceMeister. This comb is finer than the combs you get with lice shampoos and is actually considered a medical device. It is very inexpensive and a dream come true for dealing with this situation. It is endorsed by the National Pediculosis Association. You can read more about it at headlice.org and find stores that carry the comb. I know you can get one of these combs at CVS pharmacy. You can even order it online and have it delivered to your home if you wish to have privacy or don't have a store near you. Use the comb to go through your daughters hair and if there are any lice they will get trapped by the comb. If you find any, begin sectioning the hair and combing through each section. You can pin up hair as you move from the front of her hairline to the back.
I used this method for my daughter and it worked so well. She has long hair and is very tender-headed. Because the comb is so fine, it might be necessary to go through areas with a regular comb and then use the LiceMeister. My daughter found that if we saturated her head with olive oil it was easier to comb through the hair without pulling and also would keep any lice from moving. Olive oil is also great because it breaks down the glue that binds the nits to the hair shaft. If you observe any nits, remove these as you come to them. Keep in mind that the nits can be on all sides of the hair shaft so look from multiple angles. You may find that one comb through will work in this situation. Keep monitoring with periodic checks to ensure that all lice and nits have been removed.
I don't advise using lice shampoos. These products have such harmful pesticides in them and there have been studies that show that the use of these product has created pesticide-resistant lice strains. These bugs cannot be killed by over-the-counter products and the prescription products are even more dangerous. Combing is the way to go. It removes both lice and nits and no exposure to chemicals for the children.

Our doctor told us that if you blowdry on hot just a few minutes a night that will help to get rid of them and not let them come. Something about the heat they don't like. It kills the eggs supposidly...HOPING you don't get them...I had to deal with them once in my little girls hair and we had to cut some off....it was HORRIBLE...but now even if I don't wash her hair I blowdry it for about 2 min just to be safe....

Hi J.,

I have six kids and we've been through the drama head lice brings. However, the discovery of head lice varies with each individual. Here is some info I found:

Itching may not occur right away, depending on a person's sensitivity and history of lice infestation. The first time a person is infested with lice, it may take several weeks or months for itching to develop or to be noticed. In a repeat case of lice, a person may begin to itch within 2 days of infestation because the immune system reacts more quickly when exposure has occurred previously. (http://health.yahoo.com/skinconditions-symptoms/lice-symp...)

You can check out this web site for more details. In our case, I found lice favored one of my children over the others and we worked at it for six months before I could honestly say I was ABSOLUTELY certian they were gone. It is quite a chore to get rid of them, especially with long or thick hair. Believe you me, if you need to know the best remedies, I can help you with that. I have tried them ALL!

In the meantime, if you are unsure take a few precautions such as putting all her stuffed animals and pillows in the dryer on high heat for atleast 30 mins. Wash all bedding in HOT water. Boil water and soak her hairbrushes in it for atleast 30 mins, after you remove from heat. When you vacuumm make sure you empty the container or bag immediately outside. You can also get the furniture and bedding spray from Wal-Mart in the pharmacy section to spray anything that will not fit in the dryer (i.e. - couches, mattresses, and even carpet if she lays on the floor to watch TV etc.)The Wal-Mart brand is less expensive and just as effective as the more expensive stuff!

I hope you do not find these incredibly irritating pests, but if so let me know and I can definitely help you with the remedies. Best of luck!

Hi J.,
Fairy Tales makes a good pesticide free line of hair products including a barrier spray which repels lice. Their products smell nice and are gentle on hair. Call around to beauty supply, large grocery stores. My sister buys it at a barber shop in Dallas.

FYI: RID and others use a strong pesticide, pyrethrins, which is h*** o* a child's body, kidney's especially, to get rid of the poisons absorbed through the skin.

If ur daughter or either of you has lice, u will start to see very little brown or black eggs on the scalp. soon there will be bugs crawling around. We had a super bad case of lice about 6 months ago. we got rid of it with a electric lice comb which worked wonders, along with lice treatments. If that does not work use Tea tree oil. it helps u get the lice out MUCH easier. if u have any more questions feel free to write me at ____@____.com luck!!!!!!!!!1

From my research on the matter it takes about a week for them to show up and you will find them around the crown usually. If you don't have them yet I recommend that you get a lice comb. If she has eggs in her hair you will find them long before. They look kind of like dirty balled up dandruff. They are a light tanish and stuck on the hair. When they hatch the egg casings become white. This is usually the first thing that they notice at school. Once they hatch you will need to get all the stuff to go with it and thoroughly clean everything and everywhere these kids have been with soft surfaces (beds, couches, chairs, etc.).
Good luck with this as it is not an easy process if it reaches that point. On the bright side, I did find out that your child is more likely to take root in clean hair than in dirty hair. I know it is of little consolation, but it did help me a little because of the stigma of lice.

When my daughter was little, there was an outbreak of lice at her daycare. I didn't see any on her head, but I didn't want to take any chances, so I just went ahead and treated her with the shampoo, as encouraged by the daycare. She never got any, but some of the other children did, so I was glad I treated her. If you go that route, I would recommend getting the stuff that not only kills lice but prevents reinfestation as a safeguard.

The awful things work pretty fast, but if I were you I wouldn't wait till they showed up. I'd go ahead and get the shampoo and wash her hair with it. Change her sheets and especially her pillow sheets. Once you get them with long hair, it's really a nightmare. Good luck and I hope and pray your little one doesn't get them.
