Since we don't know what skills you possess it's hard to say. I have a part time business doing legal transcription work. I do it on the side - I work full time in a law office. Most of my clients are attorneys that I have known for many years and who are familiar with my work product.

If you have transcription skills, I would contact some legal transcription services and see if they have some work you can do at home.

I can tell you that working from home is WORKING!! No one is going to pay you to take care of your children while you work unless you work in a day care environment.

Go to your church and find out if anyone there has an old beater car they can sell you or give to you. You would be surprised at what the church community can do for you.

Then contact your local welfare and unemployment offices...they can help you as well.

Craigslist.org has job postings. You MUST be careful. If you have to pay for it - it's not legit. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I can tell you to keep a positive attitude. I know it's hard to do, given that things have just gone screwy for you. But you need to stay positive.

if you have skills or talent - like editing or writing - contact companies that might be looking for someone like you. If you have web-based developing skills - i know an employer in Texas. She might allow you to work from home. however, I know for a fact she will NOT pay you to take care of your children while you are supposed to be working for her.

Your best bet is to start your own business. What are your professional skills? Consulting, for example, pays a whole lot more than any party sales job will provide.

Keep in mind, too, that unless your kids are at school all day, you'll need child care. Working from home just means your job is at home. You can't work from home and watch your kids at the same time.

Working from home is great, but you need to have a game plan when it comes to kids. It's also hard work, too, like any other job.

I'm sorry you are going through a tough time.

Reality is.... No one pays you to stay home with your children. If they did, no one would be working outside the home! We'd all be collecting pay checks fur watching our own children. I don't mean that in a snarky way but think about if!

Working from home is work. People who do work from home are required in most cases to have child care. Most people who work from home have been steady employees as well because it takes a strong self discipline and self motivation to make it work.

I do work from home but its a company that we founded and own. There's no way I could do my job with children around. One mistake can cost our company and personal finances thousands of dollars. I have an 18 yr old daughter and I still don't do my job unless I have the time to be in my quiet office.

Think outside the box. You say you " can't " babysit? Why? Why can't you turn that into an I can! Look at temp agencies in your area that have jobs along the bus line, look at working in a day care facility with your children.

How old are you? What are you good at? Can you teach how to play a musical instrument? Tutor students after school ( around here a solid academic tutor gets $50+ an hour) .

Talk to your previous employer. Ask if they can help with transportation or give you some options.

When you are out shopping, you can buy off-season kids clothing on clearance and resell them at higher prices on Ebay. For example, you can find a lot of cheap clothing on clearance/sale at Target, The Children's Place, etc. Ebay is pretty easy to set up. You do need to get PayPal account to do it though. You can order Priority Mail boxes and padded envelopes from USPS online, and they can ship it to your house free of charge. Then, after you pack the merchandise, you can schedule a pickup from your house online. The nice thing about this business is that you can do it from home at night when the kids are sleeping. :)

Yes, good luck with that. We all have that dream. :) I'm not trying to be snarky, but real work from home jobs are usually skilled jobs (writing, proofreading, medical transcription, etc) and require a lot of time and attention, just like any other job.

I am sorry that things are going poorly for you right now. Your best option is the one you said you can't do...babysitting and/or child care. What about having a roommate takes this off the table? Because that's a legitimate work at home job, although with three children of your own you wouldn't legally be able to take on many more children (if you were licensed, that is.)

Most companies that allow you to work-at-home require a quiet place to work. convergys.com is one compay I have worked for from home. They are hiring all the time so its worth it to check it out. Your computer has to have certain requirements and it must pass their tests. You also have to have a certain type of headset that plugs into the computer. It is inbound telemarketing but they pay decent considering you can work in your pajamas (which I often did).

Check out LiveOps. They're a legit work-at home online/telephone customer service company. Lots of different opportunities.

My husband is a mobile doc and hired two medical assistance that work from home doing his faxes, and follow up. One even lives in another state! Not sure how great the money is and I know they are both part time. He also has a medical biller who he contracts and I think she works from home as well. I would defiantly look into medical billing.

faxing, cell phones and internet have changed the work force. A lot of jobs that could not be mobile or home based now can be. Best of luck.

It's a tough time for a lot of people. That said, there's always something that you can do if you think creatively and openly. You have to evaluate your skills and time schedule, and you also need to look at how you will market yourself and get customers/clients. How much money do you want to invest to get started? How will you check the credentials of any company you look at? You can't afford to make a mistake if you are making a financial investment.

That said, I disagree with the comment about "direct sales/mlm/pyramids" - those are not equal things! Pyramids are completely and totally illegal, as are Ponzi schemes. Legitimate companies in direct sales can be identified, and it's a time-honored way to do business. Like anything else, there are good companies and bad companies, big investments and small investments, guaranteed investments and risky ones, heavy inventory and no inventory, and so on. Robert Kiyosaki, Suze Orman and many other economists & financial experts will tell you that direct sales is the only way to earn residual income, and that starting your own business gives you a level of control you won't find in a place where you have no decision-making power. There are a lot of people who think that direct sales is a gimmick - but it's not IF there's a strong compensation plan, IF you can build an organization without a lot of control from "above" and IF it's a consumable product that people need to replace month after month. People buy things at the store every month - why not from you? There are some simple criteria for evaluating these opportunities to rule out the scams and also to rule out the companies that might be good but whose structure doesn't mesh with your needs. There are many certifications and business evaluations which help you evaluate whether something is legitimate or not.

You can also consider (sorry to say) moving to a place with better transportation options, and finding more flexible child care options for your kids, whether you are providing child care to others as a career or not.
