I've heare label daddy is great for that kind of stuff. There is no sewing involved and it stays on. dishwasher, microwave, washer safe. Hope it works for you.
I got labels from www.labeldaddy.com. You get a lot of choices of sizes, colors and fonts. I'm happy with them.

I ordered some labels recently from labeldaddy.com. They have lots of sizes, specific types for shoes, and can be used on non-clothes items too. (I used some for labeling the Tupperware I send in my kids' lunch boxes.) The labels came quickly, look great, and are easy to use.
I just got some from www.stuckonyou.biz since my daughter is starting daycare soon. I ordered the vinyl clothing "dots" and the vinyl shoe label "dots". They arrived within 2 weeks.

We use Mabels Labels: http://mabelslabels.mabel.ca/ and love them! Any of the labels are good and will stick to anything. Good Luck!!
There's an online store called Mabel's Labels that I found through a blurb in Parents Magazine. They are fantastic! www.mabel.ca Even though the company is in Canada, their shipping to the US is very reasonable (about $3). For my son, I used their "tag mates" which are stick on labels for clothing. His have been through the wash for several months now and have held up great. Their larger sticky labels are microwave and dishwasher safe so they are great for plastic personal items.
