Has anyone here used one of these centers? Specifically for Junior Kumon. The effectiveness of tutoring preschoolers aside, are these academically effective, for math and reading? I am curious to know since i see many of my kids (they r 5 yrs) friends attending these classes,,,,,does it help in getting them on how to read????

I just have to say. I had put my son into Sylvan in Kindergarten. We looked into Kumon. It was around 100 a lot cheaper than where we went. But we needed someone to sit down and teach the information to him. I have heard great things about Kumon. My son's doctor suggested it. He said all of his kids went there and one of this kids is a math major in college now. I also wanted to point out. Not everyone has the time to teach there kids. Kids sometime learn better from some one else. Some children like mine have a learning disablities. So it's hard for a parent to teach them. Some need a special education teacher.

Middle class families that read to their children and take them on day trips hardly need a program like this. I would never use one of these centers unless I did not do my job as a parent being my child's first teacher.

Our family has been very happy with the program. My daughter is in the junior Kumon and we've seen a big difference in her since she started...the responsibility of her daily work and the word recognition. We are an upper middle class family and read to her.....but this program helped us and would and have recommended it to many of my friends.

My 3 yr old granddaughter is doing the reading and the math, she's now at 2nd grade level. It's expensive but if your child is into it, it works. I dont know that much about the program, but my DIL was having a hard time keeping up with my granddaughter and that's why she put her in Kumon to keep her challenged.

Our son has learning challenges. We read to him regularly and even had a friend who was a learning specialist try to help him learn how to read. Neither worked so we tried Kumon when he was 5. Within a month, he was reading. Something about having a strutured environment, plus seeing 30+ other kids working away in the same room must have "inspired" him to learn. We kept him in Kumon for a couple of years, until his reading and his math had a good foundation, then we stopped attending. His sister attended during kindergarten and within a couple of weeks, became a good reader as well.

Kumon is a good learning tool. It prepares students from the very basics by drilling worksheets and building up knowledge as they work up. There are assistants in the center to correct the worksheets and they help students correct their mistakes. Sets of worksheets are repeated to make sure the materials are mastered before moving onto new ones. The program has a system and the contents are well researched. Kids who like structured settings also benefit there. My daughter took both Kumon English and Maths and was confident and ahead of the school curriculum while doing it. She is not afraid of Maths. We are middle class and also read to her at home.
