Kindle Fire or What?

We just bought a second laptop but now the old one is on the downward slope. I want something that I can play games on, get online, read, and have apps for the kids. Can I do all that with a kindle? I'd love that I can take it to soccer and gymnastics too! What should I get? I'd like to save as much $ as possible.

What can I do next?

One thing I don't like about the Kindle Fire is that it is not sunlight readable. I just got mine and realized could not see the movie I had on it while riding in the car on the trip we took this weekend. So you probably could not see the screen outside at a soccer game.
My laptop is in pretty good shape, so I could not justify spending the extra money on an IPad for myself.

I want an iPad but don't have the $$$, so i asked my granddaughter to bring her Kindle Fire over for me to "play" with and check it out. I liked it, I played games, went on Facebook (set up the wireless internet here at home), read, checked out the apps...and my 3 year old had no problem figuring it out. i plan to treat myself to one for my birthday, it will hold me over nicely until I can get an iPad : )

Oh, and you can get a "certified refurbished" Kindle Fire on amazon.com for $30 less, same warranty as new out the box.

I would say if it's for you, and you can afford it, then splurge and get the iPad. There are a lot more apps available, it's bigger, has more features, and is just so much nicer. But you do pay for those. My husband and I don't really have a need for a tablet ourselves, but we did buy 2 Kindle Fires for our kids for several trips that we would be making. The apps are good enough for my preschoolers, and many of them are great for me too. We can get Netflix and Amazon movies at home. But as others have pointed out, it's only wi-fi which is not available as many places as you would think. We did purchase some movies and shows and downloaded them on the Kindles so we'd have those out and about, but it won't hold a ton (we have 4 movies and about 15 shows loaded, plus several songs and 20-25 apps). So far my kids have been super happy and so have I. They serve their purpose of being good entertainment when we are at the doctor's office or on an airplane or I need a moment's peace at home. They are extremely durable... my 2 year old has treated the Kindles terribly and they have held up well. She has dropped it from a grocery cart several times and there is not so much as a scratch on it. So, personally, I am super glad I didn't dish out $600 for an iPad only to have her throw it across the room. :-)

I'm a teacher and have had the opportunity to use several tech devices in my classroom. I have used the kindle fire and the iPad. If I had to choose (and the kids do choose) I would pick the iPad hands down. It is so user friendly and other devices just don't compare. I don't use 3G just wifi and it seems to suit me. If you want more details message me and I will give you a break down. Either way it will be fun!

Yes. You can do all those things with an Ipad, Kindle or Nook. For us, the Ipad was out, mostly due to the expense. I have a Nook. We debated between the Kindle and Nook and the Nook won out because you can read it better in bright light/ sunlight. The Kindle has slightly better/faster internet service though.

Most of the aps and all of the books don't need internet access after the initial download and can be used anywhere. There are some apps that need to access the internet during use. Obviously you'd need internet access to surf the web too. And streaming movies and tv need internet access as well. We do not have a 3G or 4G plan and we have rarely missed out without a constant internet connection.

I just bought a kindle fire and I do like it, but it only supports wi-fi, and I'm finding that many places that I'd hoped to use it don't have a wireless connection. :( I wish the KFire also supported 3G...) but I can't afford an iPad so I'm making do.

I love my iPad. I bought the iPad 2 for about $430 because the iPad 3 was about to be released. Maybe you can find a good deal on the iPad 2 or get a refurbished one from Apple online.

Keep in mind that if you don't have 3G or 4G (you need to pay for a data plan), you can't access the internet while you're at soccer and gymnastics.

After exhaustive research, my husband got me a Samsung Galaxy tablet for my birthday. I love it, and wouldn't trade it for an iPad, but it does much more than the kindle fire. Costco.com sells them for $300.

iPad is better! It does everything the Kindle Fire does and more! It's more pricey, but worth it! I use mine like a mini laptop.

Otherwise, a Kindle would do what you're asking, you can play games, get online and have some games for the kids. It's much better than the Nook.

Ipad, best bang for the buck. The first version can be found on Craigslist or Amazon.

We decided against it because of the limited app platform.

Go for an iPad! ($ave by getting an older version) You won't regret it!
