JFF: I Almost Choked on My Own Spit with This One.

Has your child ever done something that made you go " Say what???"

Convo with Billy
Me: (cutting Billy's toenails) "We need to paint these and buy you some high heels."
B: "Uhm no, maybe just the first part"
Me: "I can get you some make up too."
B: "No!"
Me: "What if I die tomorrow? Who will teach you how to put on make up?"
B: "...Mama Theis." (my sister)
Me: "Will you be sad if I die?"
B: "Yes."
Me: "For a long time or for a little bit"
B: "Long."
Me: "Forever?"
B: "Well, like they say,' You can not stop the birds of sorrow from flying around (over) your head. But you can stop them from nesting in your hair.' "

WHAT??? Did she just turned my shallow meanderings into something so profound? Apparently she read the line from a book and gives credit to Walk Two Moons. Love my book nerd.

BTW, my Billy is a little girl who just turned 9 last month and is looking forward to the 4th grade. The heels and make up thing is a total inside joke. Since I don't wear either and B is a no frills kind of gal.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hmmm, I thought it made perfect sense.

Aileen P..You don't know me or the dynamics of my family! It's either you are looking into this more so that what it was intended to be or you are just the type of person who likes the stir the pot. Either way, go sit in the corner and contain yourself.
_____I rest my case, since you just proved my point.

So the kids were having their 'screen time' and time was up. Getting them to shut the games down is always a hassle and my husband gave them a warning. "You know kids, one week soon we are going to have 'No Screen Week'. That means no games, no TV, no computer"

My five year old son - without looking up - says, "Yeah, when we're DEAD"!

He knows me so well ... as I sit here wasting time on Mamapedia.

Wow!!!! What a treasure.

Reading below: I joked all the time with my kids about "what if I die in a flaming car crash" today, etc., and they always knew that it was a joke, and I wasn't guilt tripping them.

When you have a sense of humor, your kids learn to have a sense of humor too, and they get it.

This is pretty hilarious, and a *wee* bit dark.

This is a quote often used in the context of behavioral health....to illustrate the difference between suicidal thoughts and suicidal planning. Yikes.

But I like how your daughter used it. And I DON'T think it's odd or self-serving to have a silly conversation about death and dying with your kid. It was joking and lighthearted.

Aileene, not everything is "just like" your dysfunctional relationship with your MIL. Chill. They were painting TOENAILS and being silly, for goodness sakes.

Yesterday, we were watching BBC's Merlin. Arthur was fighting wyverns and having trouble. She huffs and says: "Just stab 'em in the face, sheesh."

This little girl knows the proper way to deal with dragons and their kin. :)

That is profound.
And actually, it is attributable to Martin Luther (as in Protestant Reformation, the one who hung the 95 Theses on the doors of the church).

Wow! That's a philosopher! I do Love that book!

I had a philosophe, too.

At 3 he was in his car seat and I was fussing about something, probably somebody's driving, when he pipes up and says,

Oh, Mom, that's just life!

Well, I was laughing at first because I thought Billy was a boy...

Good job, her using a line from a book! (Even though it doesn't make the most sense in the conversation...!) She'll do well in high school English writing!

Little bit of a heavy guilt trip there, mama, doncha think?

If I die how much will you miss me....ugh.

I'm sure you're right. Guilt trips and self-serving ego-boosting questions about whether a NINE year old will miss you ENOUGH if you die is totally normal.

LOL - so you claim this is loving "teasing"? You sound just like my MIL with her guilt trips.

Sorry, totally my bad. I didn't realize that the conversation topic of toenails naturally lead to mommy dying and whether DD's love is enough was humor. Now I get it....rofl...eyeroll

Cute story, though I didn't get it at first because I pictured Billy as a 4 year old boy (Well, you didn't say and I didn't know!)

I love that book, read it as an adult, but a great read for girls!
