Is Your Kid into Toms Shoes? Are They Worth It?

I took my daughter shopping yesterday to buy her a pair of Toms. After much searching, she found a pair even though they were not the pair that she originally wanted. I guess these shoes are so high demand that the you cannot order them online as they sell out so fast. Most of these shoes are canvas and run about $55 on average. I upset my daughter and other kids who were buying these shoes, when I blurted out to the saleslady, "you have got to be kidding me, $55 for a pair of shoes that look like something grandma would wear?" I thought I was funny, well no one was laughing. I'm just wondering if anyone wears these shoes and thinks they are worth the money.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for responding:) I'm glad that some of you ladies feel the way I do about these shoes. Kmart used to sell a shoe similar to Tom's (don't know if they still carry it, because I think it's mostly older women that buy them, so I don't particularly look for them). I realized later on, that purchasing one pair gives a needy child a pair, so that's great! Gotta love kids:)

I wont buy anything other shoes for my kid's, ever again.

TOMS are amazing.

Worth every penny.

The kids ones are actually fairly cheap considering what ome shoes costs for kids.

I have them in just about every color you can think of...

I love that they are like water shoes..they can get wet and dry in like ten minutes!

My kids think they are awesome because they come with a sticker and a tote when you buy them at Nordy's at least.

They are hard as hell to get the grey and or navy this time of year.

You can get her fitted and try Zappo's or one of the cheaper shoes companies online...and that way you save some green.

If you buy the fancyfull ones they are more money...just the flat solid colors come to 48 bucks and some change when you buy them at Nordy's.

The kids ones are like 25 to thirty bucks..depending on the style and where you buy them

I love the one for one...which is the main reason I keep coming back to them time and time again. In buying Toms, I know that somewhere on this planet there is a pair of shoes on someones feet because I bought shoes for ours..That is pretty cool.

Lol....they do look like something grandma would wear. The only appealing thing about them is they give a pair to a needy child for every pair purchased but still it doesn't cost that much to make two pairs of shoes. I'd consider them if they were maybe $20

Toms are fantastic! I admit the style is simple but I love the sequins ones!t your purchase is serving the poor. For every pair you buy one pair gets sent to the needy! The business is set up so it serves the poor around the world whether it is Argentina or Tibet etc..Just think someone receives a pair of shoes and can go to school who wasn't able to before. Look him up..Blake Mycoskie and read his vision www.toms.com

I had never heard of them - had to Google. I think you got off easy with only spending $55. The teens in my area are into Osiris and Supra shoes, which easily run $65-80 per pair. I found some Osiris on sale for $44 and I thought that was a good deal!

toms actually has branched out and has some gorgeous peep toe wedges. YES worth every penny since they also purchase a pair of shoes for a child who needs shoes, so if you look at it, cut the cost in 1/2 and know you are doing good.
FYI - i really do like them, especially the navy glitter ones!!! JOY on my feet:)

Don't really care for them myself....think they are quite unattractive. And for $55, I think well more than one pair of shoes could be donated to impoverished third world countries (like their commercials make it out to be) so we can't fool ourselves that this company is generously sharing as much as they could. Afterall, each shoe probably costs a minimal amount to produce, they are canvas after all. You can buy a pair of canvas shoes at a discount store for less than $10.00....they other $40+ is paying for the name...no different from buying Nike, Reebok, Coach, whatever.

They kind of look like canvas huaraches but I've also seen bedroom slippers that look somewhat similar.
They are mostly flat with no arch support.
My son doesn't care about shoes.

Agreed. Butt-ugly. However, my 13-year-old loves them. Other brands she likes are also pricey so it's not the price so that bothers me so much. It's just how ugly they are. lol Glad to see others feel the same way.

No. My SD is into Betsy Johnson, but she's not an average kid and I don't usually buy her shoes.

Reminds me of the Tretorn thing when I was in school. They were HUGE and everyone had several pairs in different patterns. At least Toms looks more different than a swoosh and they give back for every pair. I've noticed that if there's a "gimick" like that, kids like it. It's not just about the shoes. It's the social statement. They also support helping people get eye care.

Shoes are pricey. They still sell Tretorns for $35+. Converse are $40+ (some as much as $70 - SO glad I am not buying my sks' shoes because they each have a collection of these). Sketchers (which I like, personally...wear them for several years) are $50. Pick your poison if you want a name brand.

The Toms look comfy and if you go to their site "how we wear our Toms" they feed into the social media thing where everyone posts their pictures. Good marketing, IMO.

If I remember right, Toms is both an ecofriendly and donating company. I believe for each pair of shoes you purchase they donate a pair of shoes to another person who wouldn't otherwise have shoes.

Ya i think those things are really ugly haha
I can';t believe they are $55. should be more like $20.
How old is your girl? and will these shoes be taken care off?
It would suck to spend the $55 on shoes that will be ruined in a week or less.

I have never even heard of them. I'm laughing at your comment. I guess you just had a poor audience. I'm going to have to go look up these shoes and have a look see for myself.

Just checking back in and I'm with you. They are looking like granny wear. I could see my old self wearing them but I would only pay about $20 for them at most. My daughter would snub them.

I love them, especially the wedges. but... there are many other good name brands that make very similar shoes, like rocketdog for example and they are much cheaper. if you support the philanthropy of it all, then buy the expensive TOMS ones. I myself and not above buying them off of ebay for less though.
