Is This Normal - Trenton, NJ

My newborn has been wanting to stand from the time he was 5 weeks old by locking his legs when I sit him down. By six weeks he can go up and down bending his knees when I hold him in a standing position on my lap as if he were in a jumperoo. Now when I hold at arms length and balance him he takes steps towards me at 8 weeks and has the biggest smile. He also locks his legs as I take him out of the bathtub so that he can stand as I lift him out. Is this normal for his age? Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

You have to remember. He has been squished up in a tiny ball for the past 9 months. He's just starting to stretch out and get more control over his body. Don't put to much thought into it. This doesn't mean that he's going to walk early or anything. They all do this.

Hi, My little girl is now 13 weeks and standing like that is her favorite thing. She just smiles and yesterday I think even laughed for the first time. It is just a reflex and some of the books say it will go away after 8 weeks and the return when they are ready to walk, but my little one has been doing it since 6 weeks. It is fun to watch. As i have learned in the last few days from posting my own request here relax and enjoy. I hope that helps i am still learning myslef. Best of luck to you and your little one..

Yes, my son was 7 months old, trying to walk. The weight of his body made his legs bow-shaped, but they straightened up.

he is just trying all his bodies functions and abilities. he's exploring, remember that. my daughter did that also. she was born january and by march she would stand on her two feet if we held her by the hands. your son is very strong for his age.my daughter started walking when she was 10 months so this does not mean he is going to walk at an early age. he is just strong. congrats
